My dad is obese old smoker mode and it kills me every day. He's on blood thinners and have chronic pain issue because of the smoking affecting blood vessels, plus a few hernias from manual labour. He can't walk far and have problems doing anything because his lungs are fucked from smoking. I end up helping him day to day and I know he won't last long like this. He's already in his 60's. I beg him to stop smoking at least but he has tried everything and still the addiction gets back to him after every attempt.

My father is a mid life /fit/ success story.
My whole childhood he was probably the least physical person I knew. He always struggled with weight - overweight for sure, never quite got into obese territory because he had a job climbing telephone poles, but he just didn't know any better. Then when my parents divorced he hit a depression. Lots of weed, lots of self loathing - and then his father died and he being the oldest had to execute the will. It got ugly. He wouldn't even leave the house or couch for days.
Then about two years ago, someone or something got him into a dragon boat, and the transformation was nuts. The biggest change, the one that blew me away the most was how happy and passionate he had become, then the weight started coming off, then he sacked up and got his hernia surgery finally, and immediately after started jumping in the boat. I started to hear from people in the circuit that not only was he a blast in the beer garden, but he was also good. Like, really good. Eventually he moved into Outrigger Canoe, purchasing his own boat and started winning races in his age category.
This year he raced in Hawaii. TWICE. THEN he snagged a girlfriend - the first since my parents' separation. There had been women before her, but they were never the kind he was proud enough to introduce to me.
In his mid-life he's probably 5'10" now and he's making it.
