One of my friends from high school owns a Crossfit Box and has competed in the Crossfit Games, even placing a few times. His brother is the co-owner and runs the business side of things. Both are very smart (both went to Tulane for undergrad), were NCAA athletes, and his brother got his BMA from Texas.
When they started their box they were charging a paltry $120 per month membership. If you wanted personalized one-on-one training it was $100 an hour. These rates naturally went up when he started competing on TV and getting sponsored; at one point he was charging $300 an hour for private training, and his schedule was booked. They were probably making $10k a month each because their overhead was so low and they were attracting members like flies.
Then the news about the dangers of Crossfit started popping up. They had an idea.
They made all their coaches and trainers go on to be USAW, CHEK, and CSCS certified, as well as Crossfit Level 3, preferably 4. Because of all the extra training the entire staff had gone through, they could do two things - confidently boast that they have the most qualified trainers to ensure the lowest possible risk of injury, and inflate their rates to insultingly high numbers. At this point you had to pay $1800 up front for a 6-month membership and if you wanted a private training session it was $400 an hour. Other boxes were being sued and shut down, but theirs was always at max capacity to the point that they moved to a bigger facility, only to be filled to max capacity in less than a month. These 2 were making money hand over fist.
The kicker? They both know Crossfit is bullshit. They knew they were overcharging and the other boxes would eventually come back, so they wanted to strike while the iron was hot and make as much as possible before the market forced them to lower their prices. They're down to $200 a month and for a training session, but they're still making more money than they know what to do with.

There's Crossfit, then there's Internet Crossfit. I do "Crossfit" and all this means is we do Clean & Jerks, Front and Back Squats then finish off with 2km rows, burpees and maybe pullups or double unders.
I don't know any Crossfit gym in my area that does this kind of shit you see in >>35242059
