Does anyone eat bugs for more gains?

Experiences?

I'm being serious.
>>
Bumping for curiosity.
>>
Yeah I heard something about grasshoppers having around 5x more complete protein than beef or chicken.
Too bad it's kinda gross
>>
Not gross at all. I honestly don't know why bug farms haven't popped up all over the world tbqh. You don't get accumulation of toxic chemicals with farm-raised bugs and there are none of the complications that arise from industries like factory fish farms.

I had a friend who tried to start a bug for food business back in the mid '00s and it crashed and burned. Not even third worlders were interested. There will come a time when it becomes socially acceptable and I hope I can cash in.
>>
>>35214871
I understand that they provide more protein, pound for pound than any other food out there while also providing a massive list of other various nutrients. But I can't get over the mental side of it, maybe if they were crush up into a powder and mixed in with protein bars or whatever then I'd try it. But I don't think I'd just be able to reach into a bag and eat a handful of grasshoppers.
>>
>>35215480
people eat shrimp and other crustaceans all the time and they look just as foreign.

eating bugs is gonna be huge in a couple of decades

they still eat insects in some asian countries, but i doubt that anyone who comes here does

i am not sure about that, gmo like aquadvantage salmon or gold rice are more convenient and the only barrier is some stupid bureaucracy that will fall in a couple of years
however, if some corporation or foundation will make a bold move and start to promote eating insects, i guess it could become reality in a generation or so, when kids of nowadays millenials will grow up

bugs are too expensive

something like 20 or 25$ per pound

I love grasshoppers prepared Oaxacan style. You can't beat the tangy chili taste and it has a fuckload of protein and cals. Haven't eaten it much after I left Mexico but I have experimented with ants because they're more available here (you only need one anthill for a huge meal). When roasted proper they taste delicious. Great protein and if you live a bit rural it is completely free.

what are vegans views on eating bugs?
I'm sure there are no moral / economical downsides to eating insects

Im considering raising crickets in 25gal totes, getting the food to feed them from local dumpsters.

Apparently theyre only a good source of protein of theyre raised on high quality food sources. This is a way backburner project though, idk what they eat really ive only done a collective 20mins of research

>>
Which ones are the best as far as proteins/calories/taste go?
When I hear about edible insects the first thing that pops to my mind are grasshoppers and crickets.

Personally I find crickets mouthwatering even though I never tried them. They look like tiny little snacks just waiting to be eaten. And they don't bite so u might as well eat them raw.
>>
>>35215693
Theoretically we might be labelled hypocritical for eating insects, so the most ethically consistent vegan avoids bugs and honey, but I don't think it's actually bad.

This is true. I've tasted it in Asia and in Mexico. Pretty decent stuff. Can taste similar to roasted nuts, like in your mealworm theory. No idea about locusts, but probably true.
>>
>>35218751
You know how with popcorn you sometimes get a flaky bit of the outside of the kernal that gets stuck in your teeth? Crickets are basically all like that.
>>
>>35218817
not as cheap or as easily broken down like the protein in nuts or pulses
>>
Has anyone ever tried things other than crickets and grasshopers and mealworms?

What about sago worms, scorpions, and tarantulas?

Not sure I can eat a scorpion though. I love them and plan on keeping some as pets.

Someone should try something from here. They make flavors and apparently the stuff taste alright.

I ate once some drunk, tasted a bit like nuts
okay overall, but would not recommend, I bet roasted grasshopper is better
>>
>>35214871
Yeah. You can buy them at literally any pet store live, then breed them. A few hundred meal worms or whatever bug you choose will turn into a ridiculous amount within a month, and as long as what you feed them is safe for human consumption, they pretty much are. Parasites shouldn't be an issue as long as you cook them properly.

Though if you're breeding bigger bugs, make sure to wear gloves, those fuckers bite. And have a proper enclosure, last thing you want is 600 locusts flying around your house because you were a dumbass and put them in a wooden framed cage.
>>
>>35215501
>eating bugs is gonna be huge in a couple of decades

This. It already is in many parts of the world. I haven't tried them but I get the impression when toasted or fried they have a texture similar to pork rind. Fry or bake them, season them up and eat them with a crunch out of a bag.
>>
>>35218404
>12 gram serve
>7.6 grams of protein
>2.4 grams of fat
>Less than a gram of carbs
>Loaded with vitamins and 14% of recommended daily intake of zinc

What kind of girl's dick would call that nutrition ratio shit?
>>
i think they would make a great base for processed food.
just grind them up and make nugget shaped things out of them, then deep-fry. season to taste.

that way you get around the 'eating disgusting worms and bugs' part that any normal person finds disgusting.
>>
>>35218858
>What about sago worms, scorpions, and tarantulas?

why would you choose poisonous and spiky beasts when you could just have harmless soft bugs instead?
i'm also pretty sure that raising spiders and scorpions is much less efficient and much harder to do properly than mealworms of grasshoppers.
>>
>>35219648
This.

Scorpions and spiders are edible, for sure, people eat them a lot in other countries, but they're much more risky to raise, need more specialised diets and environments, and they just don't breed as quickly as things like mealworms or crickets or locusts. Plus, they're expensive as fuck, you'd be better off selling them and buying meat.
>>
>>35219648
Thats why I was asking about how they taste, not if we should farm them
>>
>>35217747
Fish is better in pretty much all aspects.
And probably costs less too.

if bugs are nutritious why is there famine in africa, srs question
>>
>>35219939
We already have overfishing in most areas of the world, and have resulted to farming to prevent access to drop dramatically. Insects are the next environmental step to go, because the source is impossible to drain. You can raise mealworms in a few weeks and then repeat the process. Also, higher protein count than fishies.
>>
>>35219958
You think Africa is covered in bugs nobody eats? How young are you?
>>
>>35219963
Whatever, hippy. Until that time arrives where fish costs more than crickets AND the cost is so high that nutritional value isn't worth it, THEN I'll eat bugs.
Until then, I'll enjoy my farm raised fish.
>>
>>35218600
fuck my stomach hurts now and I have to eat 1,000c more today I hate you and this feeling won't go away.
>>
>>35220041
Maybe we could raise the fish on bugs. Would that make you happy?
>>
>>35220066
How about I just eat regular ole fish?
Why do bugs need to be involved?
I don't have problem with eating them, I just don't get your point, man.
>>
>>35219958
they do, but you need to catch a lot of them. Also regions where there's famine are usually war torn or have had some sort of ecological event that destroys existing agriculture.
>>
>>35220076
Do you know what they feed the fish you eat?
>>
Tried some bugs in thailand, they taste like shit. And you would think they are some what crunchy, they are not more like chewy
>>
>>35215480
One of my mates was actually thinking of making a start-up doing this, basically taking grasshopper proteins and adding them to a whole bunch of other foods for 'free' nutrients at really low cost. If you could convince people it's not disgusting it's not even a bad idea.
>>
>>35220116
Not bugs.
Which are expensive compared to what they're already feeding the fish.
And would make my already good fish even more expensive.
>>
Don't you think if there were an economically viable method of mass production of insects, also a reasonable demand for insect food, somebody would have done it by now?

Vegetarian here, brace for the blog post. I'd say most vegans are against it, since they won't even eat honey or use wool. But if you weighed it on a more realistic goal of limiting complex animal death, I'm sure many would accept bugs being mainstream substitutes.

Unfortunately, a lot of vegans think is black and white where they're against the "exploitation of animals" to the detriment of animals everywhere. The honey industry is good for bees, that's why I bought honey even when I was vegan. And a lot of them won't compromise, preventing anything from getting accomplished. I'd say if eating bugs were good for reducing people eating pigs or cows, I'd be for it too. If it takes me joining in and being a consumer, I'm down as long as it's like a powder or something.

Really, the breakthroughs in the meat industry I'm most hoping for are a switch from factory farms to artificial migration to mimic nature/nomadic human lifestyle before we fucked it up to fix desertification, and lab grown meat becoming energy/financially efficient.

Until I was 26 I thought cum was supposed to crawl and swim around as a unit like a semen slug. My parents sheltered me so I didn't know how sex worked, I thought after I got married I would lay in bed with my wife and involuntarily ejaculate and my semen slug would crawl into her and she would have an orgasm. I always wondered about trying to raise my slugs and making some sort of health food from them.

Lol I learned how dumb I was when my parents said I could go on the computer unsupervised on my birthday.
