Did a 12 mile ruck (basically a shuffle/slow jog) with 35 lbs rucksack and a rifle, hit me with three of the most uncomfortable things in my life:
>straps digging into shoulders
traps stinging all day, can't lift my arms more than 45 degrees from my sides
>bottom of rucksack rubbing on lower back
basically a massive rugburn, still have weird skin discoloration and scarring almost a year later
>hip stinging whole rest of the day

Although oddly enough my feet were unscathed. Dr. Scholls gel inserts are really as great as the commercials make them seem.

I did jump rope for cardio for the first time a couple years ago.

My calves were so sore, the next day when I went to get out of bed, I literally collapsed to the floor. I had to warm-up/stretch them for 10 minutes before I could walk to class, and then after class they had gone back to being horrible, so I'd have to hobble to the bathroom, and then stretch them some more before I could walk home.

Had to do that for a week before I literally stayed in the whole weekend to massage and heat them.

go to the leg press machine
load up as many plates as your Calves can handle
put the balls of your feet on the bottom of the sled
explosively press the weight up with your Calves and locked knees, squeeze at the top, lower it down nice and slowly, pause at the bottom and repeat

go as heavy as you can and do sets of 6-8 or even 5s. repeat 2x a week, add in some seated calf raises (with bent knees) for slow high reps for bonus points.

the key is to go super fucking heavy your very first time, don't ease into, just do it. that's how you get major DOMS, one time I got calf DOMS so bad it felt like burning growing pains in my right calf especially and I HAD TO take an ibuprofen, it just hurt laying down it was so distracting

same as with any muscle. change your routine for them, high volume, intensity techniques (drop sets, rest/pause, pre-exhaust, etc.) and slow eccentric phase will all cause the microtrauma that leads to DOMS

I once had calf DOMS for 9 days after standing calf raise with multiple drop sets to failure. Something like this:
300lb 3 x 15 then drop sets
260lb 1 x F
220lb 1 x F
180lb 1 x F
140lb 1 x F

Before I started working out I never was really confident about my body, but after I started working out I started to understand the reason why we were designed to feel this. Feeling DOMS allowed me to reconnect with my body, I'd train something likes traps and the noticed the feeling throughout the day, I could feel that one area of my body. And little by little I started training more and mores areas of my body, I'd feel my legs strain walking up the stairs, or how my biceps were used to lift something up and now I feel better about my body and as hippie as this sounds, my spirit feels more in line with my body as well. Guess that's the mind-muscle connection a lot of people talk about, so it's no wonder physical exercise helps with depression.

So I'll keep training, not just to get a better and healthier body, but to also never lose sight of who I am.
