Leaving aside macros, how many nuts should I eat a day and of what sort?
I've read all sort of things about how people who eat nuts daily are less likely to die of cancer, heart disease, and respiratory disease, but what sort of nuts to put off these illnesses the longest?

The nuts you should eat are the nuts you like the taste of.

You shouldn't eat any nuts. Nuts contain PUFA. PUFA is toxic and causes cancer and aging.
1 tablespoon of sunflower kernels for your vitamin E.
Other than that, not a whole lot of reason to eat nuts. Their biological value is terrible. All their PUFA's are ALA which is also terrible.

They're a pretty healthy fat source, but they're really calorie dense, so be careful if you're on a cut. It's easy to eat a lot of them.
I don't think there's much different between them nutrition wise. I prefer peanuts and cashews.
