>guy just kinda lurks around the squat rack breathing super heavy from his 3 sets of 3 intense workout brah

i felt like a retard for not realizing he wanted to deadlift.. but at the same time, there is only 220lb total of bumper plates in my shit-tier gym so.. i don't know what he was planning to do with that.. i just assumed it was oly only, as it seemed too little to dead.

Just making a transition over to training the snatch/C&J after a couple of years of powerlifting (best lifts were 440/255/460, tfw long arms). I understand the clean pretty well with regards to keeping the bar close and having a vertical path, but I'm having trouble with two specific things: one, the snatch in general, specifically keeping the bar close after the third pull (I have a tendency to let it swing out in front of me instead of coming up and getting under the bar); and two, getting under the bar doing any jerks/push presses. I've got relatively strong overhead strength, I pressed 190x2 at a 188 bodyweight not too long ago so it's not like I'm unfamiliar with having heavy weight above me. Any suggestions?

FWIW, I'm using the 70s Big weightlifting transition template, which is basically snatch/C&J Monday and Thursday, back squat/press/rows Tuesday, front squats/bench/RDLs Friday. Been trying to drill technique as much as possible by using a combination of the Pendlay teaching process and Mike Burgener's snatch progression.
>>
>>35121552
>best lifts were 440/255/460, tfw long arms

this is no unusual ratio in powerlifting why are you "tfw arms" as comment?
>>
>>35121304
yes
>>
>>35121552
Drill highpulls from the hips with the bar before you snatch, progressively start lower and lower until you are at the height the bar is with bumper plates. Go to a full snatch after. Make sure you stay over the bar (think big chest) and use your legs, not just bang it with your hips

Jerks are hard for me too as well man. I think drive up, hips down. Helps a bit. UB pressing strength barely comes into it, it's all about lower body strength, timing and rhythm

How come you didn't sink into the hole before you dropped it?

Can you even sit in a paused squat with a barbell on your back?

I don't understand the question
>>
>>35121830
>>35121835

>>
>>35121835
>>35121843

Can you do a paused back squat deep in a hole like in this video?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sftF83euaAk [Embed]

If you fail a squat you should end up stuck in the bottom position of a squat. The way you bailed your failed squat was risky.

You should be able to sit in the hole with a weight that is higher then your one rep maximum non paused squat. If you fail a squat you should get stuck in the hole then dump it of your back.

If you are unable to do this you will never be able to catch a clean low enough or snatch efficiently.

Even if you are not a weightlifter you should still be squatting as deep as possible.
>>
>>35121946
Yes I can do a paused back/front squat deep:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8H1ryEZkHC8

I have done 153 in this manner.

Most weightlifters do not fail their squats at the bottom position, their sticking points are usually somewhere around parallel

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kAZi2qtLMYE

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d0_oC99fo2w

I am a weightlifter. Though my technique is unspectacular (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1tV4cNJomf4), my technical deficiencies are probably more related to my pulling technique than any problems relating to my bottom position.
>>
>>35122021

I suppose I can see your point about bailing properly though.

>>
>>35122021

How much do you weigh?

I watched your video. In most of the snatches you did including the competition ones it looked like you could of just power snatched them.
IMO your last snatch in competition looked unstable in the caught overhead position however the pull looked more appropriate to me then the other pulls.

This is just my opinion though and I haven't been in this sport for very long so don't take it too seriously.

>>

>>
>>35122021
>their sticking points are usually somewhere around parallel
thats because from a physics standpoint the 90degree bent is the hardest part, of any lift. This is because the force is the furtest away from the body and thus the lever gets longer and the lift gets harder

squatting from atg the lift gets harder with every degree up until 90, and gets easier with every degree increased from there

>>
>>35127024
yes. the limiting factor in The Press is always getting the bar from shoulders to above the head and this has less carryover to jerks although it is a bit more useful for snatches.

lockout is easier in The Press and that's what is good for olympic lifts. The Push The Press isolates the lockout aspect so it is very good for olympic lifts

>obv my ohp is going to increase as long as my pushpress and jerk does

Big misconception here. The most difficult part of the press is the first few inches of the movement, which is the exact portion the jerk and push press do not train.

If you don't train the press you won't get stronger at it. You don't really need a huge press to be a decent weightlifter, but it is a great accessory for strengthening and developing the shoulder girdle.

If your efficiency is shit then having a big (back) squat is basically worthless (lookin' at you durkz, boyo). The notion of "reserve strength" doesn't really come into play in the actual practice of weightlifting, and you'd probably better spend your time focusing on pulling fairly heavy and with good positions then squatting e'ryday and exhausting yourself. This doesn't mean you shouldn't squat at all, just that it should not be the focus of your training. It is an accessory exercise, and should be treated as such.

My view on the function of squats is that they are great for maintaining a certain level of leg strength, as well as developing and reinforcing confidence under heavy weights. I find that when I don't squat for awhile, I get spooked by heavier clean sets, and end up missing weights I know I can hit.
>>
>>35128819
>doesnt help your total
>great accessory
>>
>>35128749

It's a great accessory for strengthening and developing the shoulder girdle. I did not say it would add any kilos to your total--though it might. Having a larger, stronger shoulder girdle is always helpful in weightlifting, as it helps stability overhead, and gives you a better rack from which to receive and push the bar.

But do whatever you want, I couldn't care less.

>>35128999

on snatch your lumbar rounds immediately when you start the pull and you lose tightness in the back
you start the second pull a little early then fail to extend properly as anon said
your flexibility could be a little better
your bottom position is unstable

on the clean you let the bar drift away from you when you start pulling and you seem to lose back tightness again
you extend too early
you catch high and ride way down
very loose in the ascent

something looks off in the jerk stance, probably that you're not driving head through and need to hyperextend the back as a result, but it's not too bad

overall it wasn't as terrible as anon was saying, you just have some issues to work on. Notably, full extension. More hang/block work imo, along with mobility

I've had it for at least one year.

Guys i posted here last month saying i was ganna join an oly lifting gym. Im 6 2, skinny fat, and 19 years old

I got a lot more flexible and and shit over the last month. It also took me the whole fucking month just to learn how to do squats, with only the bar, but i still need to fix my form up a bit. Around 3 times a week the coach will be there and helps me with form and everything

Is it supposed to take this long to learn or am i just trash? Feels bad man, haven't made much progress

Spend as much time with the coach as possible, eventually you can time it so that you do your classics when he's there and do strength/bb work other days

I was kind of memeing. Foam rolling and stretching are essential. They'll alleviate it at least a little. Definitely needs to become a habit.

Also I find that not squatting heavy or cutting depth really tightens me up

I'm not serious at all, I'm an academic more than anything. I just use my body as a test subject for my ideas which is probably why I'm always fucked

mostly it revolves around the fact that I've had knee problems since before I started lifting (got into lifting because of them actually) and can only really squat low bar well or intuitively. I should really be squatting with a more knees-out style but I feel weak and it's never clicked that way strength wise, so I don't really 'know' how to squat high bar terribly well

Because from what i understand, oly lifters squat almost every day and wear wraps or sleeves to alleviate and/or prevent pain. But wouldnt that just make things worse? Shouldnt they rest? how does all this work? I dont know when to stop because in all honesty its not so painful i cant work through it. but on the other hand i dont want to make it worse. It doesnt hurt at all actually during the squatting itself if i wear my wraps.

quadriceps tendon, not much. Only got it doing athletics once, and from my experience it doesn't happen very often compared to patellar tendonitis in other athletes/trainees

For PT, I've generally found that along with immediate rest (obv):
-fish oil
-stretching (particularly rectus femoris, VMO, and ITB)
-topical voltaren

are the best. Stretching in particular is pretty crucial because you'll fuck up the tendon when you think it's healed just because it's getting pulled out of alignment along the patellofemoral groove along with the kneecap.

Limiting heavy eccentric loading is a good idea for the future if you do have tender knees, but light eccentric loading is a pretty standard rehab procedure. Pic related is a perfect example of how you can use it to stretch out and realign the tendon fibres by carefully mediating the stress on the ligaments.

For most people, just stretch, take it easy when it hits you, and try fish oil. If it's chronic then you should look into physical therapy like pic related.

>>35132575

health ends where competition begins m8
you're not a pro so don't wreck yourself for the 10 years of olympic dominance you'll never hit in exchange for fucked up joints. Abadjiev's lifters always had knee pain and they dealt with it because it was knee pain or you screw up your training cycle with too much rest
>>
>>35132607
Thanks a lot man, the pain is mostly over my knee cap and it goes away with just a few days of rest, stretching and foamrolling. So im guessing i havent fucked up too bad. Im just curious how far i can go until i should stop, because as i said i CAN work through it, its not that painful. But i dont want to fuck up for good.
>>
>>35132630
Or well, actually. There is some pain in my patellar tendon below the kneecap as well.
>>
>>35132526

I don't understand why you would ever think that would be a good idea to try, how much about physiology do you even know?
>>
>>35132755
hes an actual madman
>>
>>35132630

well tendinitis heals fairly quickly
tendinosis is more of a chronic condition

you probably could adapt your form a little to prevent it

>>35132755

plg, Isley in particular, was INSISTENT it was a good idea with more benefit than harm. I was going light, maybe 60%, so I thought I'd have a minor issue if any
>>
>>35132788
how much do you back squat now?
>>
>>35132788

Thats actual insanity, you're lucky your shoulder girdle can bare any load even after rehab

Side note I have lower back tightness and am wondering what the best stretches would be to alleviate that
>>
>>35132882

>>
>>35132834

160 high bar ATG. Closer to 180kg low bar but I haven't tested in like a year (hit 178), completely gave up after shoulder injury because I couldn't handle it.

rehab was fucking useless desu, they had no idea what to do because they weren't sports physios. Waste of money (probably spent over $140 in copays over 3 months)

I dont really squat errr day. My coach put us on a leg program for 6 weeks as a team and i gained 10kg of bw so i jumped from 195 to 220 in that time frame... I'm sure my other lifts will catch up and I do just as much lower back work... I still made 7kg on my snatch and 10kg on my clean and jerk in that period and hopefully i hit some prs tomorrow. down to 93.6kg!

I used to have regular running shoes in which I used in the gym for all the lifts and i had zero to very little butt wink. Now I bought myself a pair of WL shoes and my buttwink has noticeably increased. I haven't tried squatting yet in those new shoes but wearing them in front of the mirror vs wering my running sneakers gives me a noticeable buttwink and lower back rounding. Why is that happening and is it just temporary?
