It's to simulate a vertical legpress, which is actually a machine. My gym has one. Can be useful to avoid loading your lower back during a 45degree leg press, also it is easier to achieve more r.o.m

it's a thing, barbell leg press that they did back in the day when they didn't have leg press machines. It is absolutely retarded to do nordays anyway as we have leg press machines, and even stupider to do in a smith as any balance effect you would get is taken away.
