What drives a man to lie so blatantly. What train of thought did they have in making up numbers on a topic they don't know shit about to a person who can easily determine whether or not you're talking out of your ass? Does the skelly really expect you to believe he was benching 2 plate for reps? Does the old fat guy expect you to believe he was moving 6 plates off the floor?

also i forgot to mention, single-arm deadhangs and dead hangs/pull-ups/chin-ups off a small ledge, like 1 inch or smaller (i started with a 3 inch ledge, now i am down to1) is GOAT for grip strength.

it will hurt the fuck out of your fingers the first few times, but as they get stronger, you can handle more abuse.

really focuses the finger strength, which is often the biggest limiting factor in developing grip strength.

>>
>>35083488
I'm gonna guess something similar to Dunning-Kruger effect.

They don't know enough about lifting to even begin to picture what even a basic understanding of the subject is actually like.

So they say what to them sounds like a plausible lie, and because it sounds plausible to them, in their ignorance, they assume it sounds plausible to you.

>>35083532
To be fair, I don't think the anon you're replying to is talking about literal grip, like grasp. The problem in furniture moving isn't literally gripping something, but more about knowing the right place to put your arms and where to something it that won't smash your fingers when you move it through the door or set it down.
>>
>>35086266
Hmm, that actually makes a lot of sense, I guess it just stems from a need to belong
>>
>>35084530
The hilarious thing about this is that it's often called the Bike Shed problem.
An engineer tells people the best way to build a nuclear cooling stack, they nod and get to it.
But everybody knows what a little shed is like, so when that same engineer proposes how to build one, they'll get a dozen and a half opinions from everybody in earshot on how they're doing it wrong.
>>
>>35081418

i usually answer like this:

>"yeah, YOLO, amirite?"
>"yah"
>"you only lifted once"
>>
>tfw you are one of those guys

I hate those guys too but I am one, and in my defense I'm not lying either
Basically I used to roid but hit a bad point in my life and stopped lifting for over a year, plus I played rugby and got knocked out of season with a shoulder injury and later a few broken ribs

I'm in university (no job) and didn't leave my room or speak a single word to another human being for about 2 straight weeks
Worst part is I live in a tiny room in a run down motel for this school year and didn't leave the small room that entire time, just ate soup from a hot pot and other snacks I had lying around

Needless to say my lifts have suffered quite a bit and only recently have I started to try again

Your body was fucking disgusting and not normal in the slightest so it doesn't surprise me that it would fuck up such a basic system

Where did all this sudden "BMI is great" meme come from?

It's like as soon as /fit/ hears a fat person say something, they immediately need to rabidly proclaim the exact opposite. We don't need to know somebody's BMI to tell their melted candle looking flesh has too much fat in it; that doesn't magically make BMI useful for individuals. If a fat person said it was noon you'd say it was midnight without even looking out the window.

BMI is designed and created as a statistical tool. It's perfect for telling you if one city or one school is fatter or skinner than it should be.

But fundamentally people aren't scale models of each other. Diagnostic use is bullshit. For everybody that has a build that is more than a standard deviation thicker or skinner than average for their height it's going to be wrong. It'll tell them they're a healthy weight when they aren't, or whatever. It fits maybe 64% of the population accurately enough to be worth looking at.

Why bother with such a feeble tool? Somebody that's really too fat or too skinny should be obvious from looking. If you need more detail, get a body fat measurement. Hell, just a waist measurement to add to height and weight and you're already leagues ahead of BMI.
>>
>>35086120
That's pretty goddamn funny
>>
>>35086332
it's a good way for doctors to tell fat people they're at risk for heart disease and beetus

>I use to lift for 10 years bro
>tfw he looks 21
>"k thanks I know what I'm doing"
>leave me alone
> see the guy struggle pressing 40lb dumbbells

WHY THE FUCK SO THESE PEOPLE EXIST?
>>
>>35086332
Because when you look at a population it's the best tool to use. No one here is going to proclaim it as the gold standard because a fatty dislikes it, it's simply an easy tool to use to get a vague understanding of a groups size. Anybody who uses it as a diagnostic tool is an absolute fool, a doctor who sits there and calculates your BMI instead of just looking at you and telling you what's up is a fool and no one does this. We know this, anon simply said that for the vast majority it's on point unless your iopq who just looks shit. Why do you feel the need to point this out?
>>
>>35086332
You are right, it should be obvious, but if you are setting goals for someone's health, or any goals in general, they should be SMART goals, the M stands for measurable.

It doesn't matter how strong you are, but more so how you can utilize your strength in multiple dimensions at once.

I have weights at home and had the bar set up with 80kg worth of plates. The bar isn't a heavy bar and is listed as only 11kg but whatever, there was 90kg sitting on the floor from warm up hack squats and I get interrupted by knock at the door. Two friends who have just dropped by. Let them in and just mention I was about to start my workout. The small one scoffs at the weight I've got racked up on the floor. Asks me what I expect to gain from lifting that. Tell him it's a warm up and he asks how much it is. Tell him 90kg and he starts saying how he was lifting that much "overarm style" (he meant OHP) back when he used to work out. Guy is around 5'6 and weighs about 70kg at absolute most. Humor him saying how that's impressive and I can't do that much. He keeps going on and his lies start irritating me so I goad him into showing me. He says he's been working all day so he probably won't be able to do it right now and when I suggested he might have meant lbs (which would still have been too heavy for him) he decides to show me. Psyches himself up, tries to clean the weight up and instantly fucks his back up and drops the barbell almost putting a hole in my wall.
Whenever I think about the expression on his face for that split second when he tried to clean that weight and instantly realized he was fucked I still chuckle. I have no idea why he would even attempt to do that. He was off work for 3 weeks.

I have my own reasons to trip. That is to ask for more personalized advice. I didn't trip for the last year while my girlfriend had cancer. Now I'm trying to get back into lifting.

Kek, there was a fat powerlifter's Instagram posted a little while ago, at the top he listed his stats including 585 squat. Video of his 585 squat wasn't even 1/4 squatting it, he was pretty much doing a static hold.

Even his caption said "I know I should go deeper but it's 585lbs!" Or some shit like that.

Literally every time some /fit/izen lists their stats I think of this

To be fair you can literally double your squat if not triple it if you go for actual quarter squatting. I mean even fucking Bud Jeffries who can squat 900 lbs if not more can do 1,900 lbs with quarter squat by his own admission.

Work with a guy who is dumb as shit. He hears that i lift and tells me that 1 and a half years ago when he was into mma he got up to 270 lbs lean, and could bench 375. He weighed himself and it came out to 183. Still claims that he must have lost it all because of his bad diet, but he could get it back i just a few months. Another guy asked me for exercise advice, but said he doesnt want to get big, just tone. Said he lifted in highschool and got huge. Claimed he just seems to pit on too much muscle. He told me at his max he was 160 pounds. Told me he wants to look like another guy who is 155 and only does body weight.
>>
>>35086166
400 lb guy tried to give me lifting advice. I told him i deadlift 405 at 240 lbs. He tried to act like a pro because he once hit 460 for one. The guys stomach pokes out from beneath his shirt. Yes, i realize 405 at 240 isnt that impressive, but a lot better than 460 at 400.

>>

I used to think i was strong. I once told a guy who was a part of a body building team that i could bench my body weight. I had omky ever benched once and had no idea how much it was. At the time i said this my body weight was 270. There is no way in hell he believed me, but i sure did. I had done pushups for years, and falsely assumed that it would transfer over. I am just now after 2 years benching 270 at 240 bw. I can still only do 80 pushups, but i never train those. I think non lifters just assume that one form of strenght translates to all others, like how they assume that if you are strong you should never lose at arm wrestling.

I work hard, then i go to the fucking gym at lunch and do an hour of heavy lifting. Before you say anything, yes i am aware that it could be more effective if i spent longer. I usually do a couple of the compound lifts and a few accessories. I am almost on the edge of passing out every single time i leave. Anyways, the reason i do it is that i try not to hold back, secure in the kmowledge that i will have to push even harder to finish out the work day. Its like running in only one direction till exhaustion because then you have to force yourself to walk back. It gets me used to pushing myself.
>>
>>35093521
I always superset everything to get as much in as possible, starting with the compounds, then supersetting accessories to finish it off. For instance i like to combine back and legs. I will do squats supered with lat pulldown followed by romanian deadlifts and tbar rows. Then i try for max reps on pullups. I am aware once again that this may not be optimal, but i have seen a lot of progress, and i cant go after work because of college.
>>
>>35086284

Except that's wrong. Anyone who has ever worked with an Engineer knows that because Engineers have never actually built anything, a myriad of problems occurs when they have total control over a project. Sure, we should probably listen to the college educated guy on something as complex as a Nuclear tower, but a fucking bike shed? No, dipshit, we don't need 4x6 trusses, 2x4 is plenty.
