I have tried both of these for a while and saw pretty much no progress. I'll get a bit more flexible after a few sets of dislocations, but I'm back to square one when I try again the next day.

I don't know how much your already working out, but scooby has a pretty good beginners guide to pull ups and chin ups. I followed it and got to 8 pull ups pretty fast. I did start from skinny fat though, so if you're overweight it might be good to lose some more kilos before doing them.

Lose weight, do the heaviest pull downs you possibly can. When you can do one proper pullup, do it. Then wait for 30 seconds and do another, and keep doing it until you have a minimum of 20-30 in a day. Once you do actual pullups you will quickly be able to increase the amount you're able to take.

It matters, but as long as you get stronger lats, it'll help you towards pullups. Rows and deadlifts will help you as well, just not as much as heavy pulldowns, and especially not as much as pull ups.
125 kilos I take it, should be plenty to lose from then. If you work out with someone, you can have them assist you doing pull ups by basically holding your feet up, then you decide how much help you need by the amount of pressure you put in his hands.
You WILL be able to do pull ups if you don't quit.

Bought powertower thingy so I could do dips and pullups in addition free weights.
Dip station is too narrow, hurts shoulders.
Pullup bars too far apart, hurts elbows and wrist.
What waste of money. I installed a separate bar in my garage for pullups. Just a thick metal closet rod between two rafters but works perfect and costs 10-15$. Still can't do dips though...
