There is nothing wrong about being alone at certain phases of your life. You can learn a lot from it.
>>
>>34997024
Well, I suppose you don't want to be an expert, just to have decent (not as stressful) job. I'd say - just grab a book of basics. Select a language - Java and .NET will be sticking around for some time, and they're easy to get into, and also have a lot of good paying, but easy jobs. Then google for books for beginners, usually a thread from StackOverflow will pop-up, and there are a lot of experienced people there who know their shit.

And as soon as possible, grab a job as a junior somewhere - even if they're paying shit, the experience is worth it.

I was really expecting questions from someone who's already in college or some shit, so my advice is really obvious. Just start. When you learn something basic like Java/C#, it's easy to go to something else if needed.

Also, if you have no obligations where you live, just move to a country where college is free.

Where I come from (Czech Republic), the college is payed by the tax-payer, so they have it in the law, that they have to provide access to lectures for everyone, and if you want to go to practices/labs, they won't throw you out, if there's empty space.

Yeah, I know that. It's just rough sometimes, always being on the grind.
And what bothers me the most is that my friends always tell me to "stop hustling". Like bruh, I literally cannot at this point. If I didn't work so much, I wouldn't be able to support myself.
Like my room mate, is just doing upgrading right now, which I mean, good for them and everything, I think its awesome when people go back to school. BUT, they're constantly complaing about how hard their grade 12 math course is, or how they have to write a 5 pages research paper, and how they have to unwind.
Like, their parents pay for their portion of the rent, their living expenses, fucking everything, and they do literally shit all.
Like why can't that be my life? Why do I have to just claw my way through, and then get chastized for clawing too hard?
ahhhhhhhh

How spot on do your coding skills have to be to get a job like that and what kind of training do they give you? I'm not very good at coding and am only familiar with sql at the moment but will be learning Java .net and c# over the next year. If someone handed me an ER diagram and said code this, and I had no notes or someone to ask questions too I would be fucked and typically even with my notes if I can't get a certain query to run because it's more complicated than my notes It takes me forever to find my error unless I have someone to ask.

I've never been given an ER diagram. That would be awesome. Usually it's some vague requirements from an analyst that change halfway through implementation. When you're a junior developer they give you a lot of slack, and the more senior guys generally don't mind questions. Really you just have to know whatever language your going to be using pretty well, and be good at Googling stuff (which is like 75% of what I do).

>mfw you're me

I'm pretty shit at coding and all I do is google stuff. But close to 100k is impressive.

I'm 22 and may have just gotten a job at 45k (definitely not that good) at a big company, but to be fair I have literally no work experience and haven't worked a day in my life.
>>
>>35000628
how'd you pull that off? and what lang is it in
>>
>>35000773

Well, I have a degree in computer science and a math minor. That might have something to do with it...

It'll be Java, but I'd be learning some software called PEGA, which seems to create optimized code for you so to speak. If I've done my research correctly.
>>
>>35000628
45k isn't great, but I started out at 60k about 3 years ago. Everybody needs developers nowadays, so you'll be fine.

Once you've got some experience you can ask for a lot more money. What I did was just kind of jump from job to job every year or so. Just make your resume impressive and don't suck at interviewing. I was at my first position for like a year and half, my second for about 6 months, my third for about a year, and I started at a new position about a month ago. And every time I got at least 10k more than my last position.

What really helped was getting a security clearance at my second job. I'm in the VA/MD/DC area, and being a software engineer here with a high security clearance is pretty much a golden ticket.

Environmental Advisor in the Cement Industry

23 y/o £34k sterling/year.

Downsides are 50 min drive to work every morning then 1h 10min drive home, and a bullshit management team & plant who stress me the fuck out most days. Also often no chances in the day to keep up good eating habits due to meetings and work obligations. Financially, life is good and looking to buy my own place in a couple of months. But the stress it places on my social and lifting lives makes me question whether it's worth it.

Same.
>>35000486
I like it. You have to study a lot, but the biggest hurdle is getting in. Once you are there, and if you are passionate about it, you can get through it. You will get burned out at some parts, particularly when studying for boards.

I'm graduating with a history degree so I can either

a) Do a masters
b) teach english abroad
c) starve

Not sure yet.

Most C-like languages are nearly the same. Just choose one you like.

I use python at my current job and told them during the interview that I'd never used python before in my life. Job before I used Java, job before I used C#/C++.

>>35001397
Yeah...I worked over 50 hours at the school this week, and now I'm doing lesson planning. I usually hit 60 hours a week, and then I'm hearing some people making 100k in this thread while dicking around as programmers and I'm making 40k at 24. I learned how to program and was good at it, so I'm starting to think money wise, wasn't the best choice.

I like the kids though (high school seniors), but it doesn't seem I have any real say on how I want to run my class, especially if you have inclusion.

You probably heard from the middle-upper class who is butthurt because their party lost the election for the 4th time. I'm not pro-government, but it isn't nearly as bad as, say, Argentina or any of the EU countries which are in the middle of a crisis. It's not exactly in its golden age, it just received a serious blow - It is not perma crippled, these guys are just crybabies who'll end up cleaning toilets in the US because they think it's more prestigious than being middle class here (protip: it isn't. The guys saying these kind of people have better lives than our middle class are completely biased and shouldn't be taken seriously. Since he is browsing 4chan he is probably a richfag crying online) . Brazilians, especially the upper classes, feel the strange urge to make their nation look bad to foreigners. The so called "vira lata complex".
Anyway, law student.
