So I read the article / videos on the muscle snatches. I tried to do them today but i kinda did a half assed mixture of a snatch and a muscle snatch lol

One big thing I think i'm starting to understand is that the whole hip banging thing isn't really a thing, and that the movemnt is really about just pulling the bar straight up, and letting your body be the reaction mass from pulling it up.

I might have that concept fucked up a bit, but thats what I'm noticing. I've also been going over all the webms posted and breaking down the small parts of the lifts. its insane to watch how quickly they drop under the bar. also how close they keep the barbell to their bodies.

also Caladan, I had some questions for you about this while i was lifting but i forgot them lol. As I watch some Webms and drink beer tonight I'll probably remember some and periodically quiz you if thats ok

slow down your pull so you can actually feel the positions, you're still just ripping the bar off the floor i dont really see any difference from before

do low hang snatch like torokhtiy does them, start from the top then go down into almost all the way down to the floor but don't let the weights touch, focus on keeping the lats tight but arms relaxed you do this by internally rotating them then shaking them around, you keep the lats tight right at the top by keeping your chest up you should feel it all throughout the snatch

if you manage to keep the lats tight and just pull straight while keeping the same back angle you'll feel how it's supposed to properly make contact with the body

your start position isn't being held for very long, you've got to think of it more like a hack squat with the weight mostly on the midfoot. What you're doing is more like a deadlift because your chest is down. If you hyperextend your back a little you'll see what happens to the chest. You also bend your arms immediately which isn't a good idea, your arms should be ropes.

My best advice would be to keep a slightly arched (hyperextended) back. Weight on the heels. Bar over the balls of your feet.

Try and get down lower. You are pressing the weight out (thats illegal in oly lifting).

You need to get under the bar, extend your arms out and receive. Maybe its due to a lack of confidence

1 and 2 are the most important for getting the right tech. For you right now, hang position is important

yeah I actually have good form in hang and block work. For some reason it's only when I'm coming off the ground that I have trouble with back tightness. I think this is a flexibility issue though

I was also doing great before I had this enforced hiatus because of travel, illness, etc. so I think I need to get back in the groove

In a snatch you will receive at a very low position

In a power snatch (the weight is lighter and better for recovery whilst still training technique) is caught at a lower height.

Well, hello everyone, I'm from Mexico, 18 and new to weightlifting.
I've been lifting for almost one year, did hypertrophy mostly. I'm 5'8 @64kg.
My lifts are 210 lbs squat, 240 DL and 120 bench. All 3x5.
In my actual gym (and all of the town) there isn't equipment for Olympic Lifts, the most close is Crossfit but the coaching it's not good, many friends do snatches with extremelly shitty technique and baby weights.
So I'm going to join to the box tomorrow and train all by myself from the base. I have been practicing the basic movement patterns and researching and lurking here and the sticky a lot.
This week I'm just going to practice lifts with bar, do squats, stretch and do a bit of bodybuilding stuff.

That's it, going to post regularly here and hope to receive some feedback.

yes, this ties into your start position problem as well, if you can maintain the arched back in low hang snatch then you can lower the bar all the way down from the hang and still maintain the back tightness then you just solved your problem. if you can't like i said then you have mobility issues

Hey bud.

Few pointers

1. Get tight
2. Slow it down until your reach the hips! The bar doesn't need to go a million miles an hour from the ground, try and create tension and hit the correct positions
3. Hip starting position was better, need to keep them lower, lead with your chest (think big chest)
4. Stay over the bar more, this will tie in with the 3rd point (Big chest again)
5.Don't bend your arms until after contact
6. Try and move the feet apart and catch deeper. A good thing to drill is stand straight up with your feet in the pull position and then move your feet out quickly to the catch position and land in a quarter squat.

If you're elbows hurt it's more than likely because you're not generating good shoulder position (you're not, need to stretch more obvs) which is generating a lot of torque on the elbow. It'll get easier the more you do it and your body wont freak out so much.

There's a fine line. Too many lifters will fuck the whole thing up - either because the qualifying total is too damn low and you have a bunch of idiots competing with no real investment in the sport, or simply because you have so many people involved that it murderises the scheduling and makes the whole event a terrible grind for everyone involved.

Shit, I could've taken a run at last years qualifying total and I'm not even actively training the oly lifts. That's fine for smaller meets (you do, after all, need to give new talent a chance to compete properly) but its a terrible idea for a big comp.

Hey owg

I've got five days of nothing coming up that I plan some good progress in. 150 front squat, 170 back squat with bar in garage(should be easy just not used to new bar), 105 snatch(not so confident) and 135 clean and jerk.

My clean tech is garbage, snatch is even worse. Stability in the split is poor but i'm pretty happy with my jerk.

What are your lifts now?

If I was you I would just plan a max out on day five, first day do light/med powers + squats
Day 2 do medium full classics + pulls (cln)
Day 3 light classics + squats and pulls (Sn)
Day 4 off
Day 5 max out

Don't go overboard on the squats or pulls, just keep strength in the legs and the pulls feeling smooth.
Planning to make a lot of progress in 5 days is garbage without weeks of structure leading upto it though.

Snatch 97, clean and jerk 125(I know it's a large jump), paused 140 front squat, 170 back squat(160 paused). Close attempts at both 175 and 180 for back squat.

My programming basically looks like this:
AM-clean and jerk tech and front squat single with 85% OR snatch tech and back squat single at 85%(switch daily)

PM- clean and jerk max+backoff(how I go about this varies on what I need) and front squat max+backoff OR snatch max+backoff and back squat max plus backoff

Normally wednesday and sunday would be light. Also lately i've been doing technique oriented pulls in the AM.

Your best chance at getting increases like that is probs just to deload and treat day 5 as a comp. You're not gonna gain much strength or technique in five days time.

The only thing you can hope is that the technique and strength is there and that freshening up will put your body in the right place to hit them.

That's why I said that 5 days wont give you much in the way of an increase unless the weeks/months before has been built up and structured towards hitting those numbers at the end of the five days.

There's a chance you could hit the numbers, I'd start really focusing on the day as a big day, try and get yourself in the right spot mentally. Don't treat it as another training session. If you don't you just have to take a step back to develop and build up again.
