(For the unaware, Xenophon was another student of Socrates, and like Plato and some other guys wrote a bunch of stuff they said was transcribed dialogues with Socrates, but at least some of it was definitely them putting words in their super famous teacher's mouth.
Also, most historians are pretty sure Socrates was a real guy, we just don't know what percentage of the stuff attributed to him he actually said.)

anybody who seriously studies plato understands that none of it claims to be 'transcribed,' that's a popular myth.
Many dialogues take place in private, and Plato is only present at a couple of them as a character, and never in a speaking role. Of course, he speaks through all of them as the writer.
Some dialogues are highly dramatized (like the Protagoras) which directly play on certain theatrical tropes of the times.
As far as I'm concerned, from anything but a purely historical standpoint, Socrates should always be understood as a character: 'Plato's Socrates' or 'Xenophon's Socrates.'
