People make jokes about because it's so popular but it works and it's basically what every beginner should be doing - learning the lifts, training the CNS, getting newbie gains. My only advice is:

-Don't start with an empty bar and move up to 5lbs like he suggests, look for a reasonable starting weight for each lift for someone of your height age and gender on the internet.

-Don't follow Rippetoe's diet advice, don't do GOMAD, don't eat 5000 calories a day. Get some outside advice on diet.

weddels 5/3/1 is super easy to get into and makes you do the big lifts frequently. Been doing it for a year and seeing progress, although you can do basically anything and see progress at the level I was at.

Literally no strength routine would give an athlete like that such a DYEL upper body with world class quads: at worst the forearms would be developed as much as the quads because the guy would have a mid 600lb deadlift with the leg development alone. If you're too much of a dumbass to up the bench volume and do curls, you're never going to make it. And they don't. Newbies should read the sticky, ask /plg/, /fraud/ and /owg/ for advice, and then leave fit for a couple years. Or just buy the most popular weightlifting book on Amazon (hint: it's SS)

However, my legs before SL/SS were fucking tiny. And I'm 6'4. So I don't look quite as ridiculous. I went from 198 to 224 and it was mostly in my legs.

Squatting heavy three times week started to kill me around 255. I was still completing all the reps, but I felt like shit all the time.

If you're not smart about switching off of SS, then you can probably hurt yourself or burn yourself out.

I switched from SL to 5/3/1 BBB, which looks like the best low-level intermediate version of 5/3/1.

With the Beyond 5/3/1 stuff (joker sets, FRP, etc), it could be fucking awesome for beginners. Wendler even lays out a beginner program.

However, I don't know if true beginners could fully utilize the auto-regulation in the program. The whole adding weight to your training max once a month could be fixed with joker sets, but I'm not confident in a beginner's ability to gauge their limits. Plus you'd probably need to workout 4 days a week, which for a beginner, may actually be good for creating a "go to the gym motherfucker" habit.

BUT, the big upside is that you can include extra accessory work. So a beginner could essentially do something more similar to a push/pull type program.

5/3/1 could bridge the gap between SS compound lifts and PPL stuff. I prefer blackiron (google it) as my 5/3/1 calculator.

Conclusion: I would suggest at least doing SS/SL for at least 6-8 weeks before considering 5/3/1. Preferably longer to at least reach intermediate strength levels, which are generally something like: 130ish OHP, 225 BP, 300 squat, and 350 DL.

No worries. This will obviously vary depending on your size and previous lifting experience.

Some people maybe need to switch to something else before they hit these numbers.

Most people say keep with SS until you completely hit a wall. Just keep in mind that the wall can be different things (not going up in weight, too tired to function, starting to get fat/t-rex mode).

If you want to train for strength or powerlifting then it's a great routine. It's decent routine for hypertrophy just make sure to add accessories like curls, shoulder and tricep work. It'll get you way stronger than people doing a bodybuilding routine and then you can translate that strength into bodybuilding exercises when you finish SS, and the more weight you can lift on these exercises the more stimulus for growth there is.
