Roommates and I are building a home gym. Got two bars off of Craigslist, but one of them is bent. Is that going to affect lifts in any way?

Also, what are some home gym essentials?

Share your home gym set up.

Power cage w/ pull up bar/dip station
Weights
Adjustable bench
Some dumbells if you use them
Floor protection
>>
Paint it red.

It will make a great kinky room.

Also buy some Bad Dragons and some latex stuff.
>>
>>34943249
mats for deadlifts
a rack (cage is not necessary)
removable bench
pullup/ dip station

and obviously barbell and weights
>>
>>34943249
>but one of them is bent.

into the trash you go. an unbalanced + compromised bar is a dangerous bar.
>>
>>34943298
>>34943534
Will the bent bar affect anything?
>>
>>34943576
Fuck. Alright, thanks.
>>
>>34943577
How bent we talking?
>>
>>34943249
It'll roll out of your hands when benching and deadlifting and might set you off balance when squatting.

Dont buy a bent bar.
>>
>>34943249
I have power cage, bar and weights. Thats literally all you need.

You can probably get some cheap dumbbells those might be worth it too

One of my roommates actually has a set of those adjustable dumbbells with the screw ends like pic related. Are those any good?

>>34943596
It tends to settle only in one position while racked. It's fairly visible. It was cheap, so I'm not too heartbroken.

Also, where do I get cheap floor protection?
>>
>>34943887
Home Depot or a flooring store should have those square tiles for cheap. You don't need a huge amount of space, so you won't need much.
>>
>>34943887
They good, but arnt those normally only 15kg?
>>
>>34943956
I can buy more weight and get it up to wherever I want, I believe.
>>
>>34943249
how much can a wooden squat stand like that hold? I can't believe its holding 4 plates.
>>
>>34944004
No clue. We managed to score a cage in good condition for cheap.
>>
>>34944004
That shit looks like a death trap. Like a fucking homemade guillotine.
>>
>>34944037
Yea exactly what I am thinking, though I found a video and the guy claims 300lb.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1ylUpmRsZn8

I got my steal squat stand (max 325lb)for 72 usd, but I am interested to know how much that wooden stand can handle.
>>
>>34944014
Good for you mate, a cage is definitely the safest approach for squats and bench.

This is my homegym, Up to 95kg in weights.
>>
>>34944062
You'd have to replace that wood like every year, even if you bolted it together. Heavy squats would destroy that shit.
>>
Look into some DIY strongman shit for extra cheap training equipment

Build sandbags, use old punching bags for carries, fill 5gallon gas canisters with water and sand for farmers carries, old tractor tire from a junkyard and a sledgehammer.
>>
I squatted my way up to 3pl8 with my old gym's bent bar. I actually kinda liked how it fit on my back, crazy as it may sound.
For squats, I wouldn't worry.

I got some nice thick safety mats (Regupol brand, if you're interested), work just fine. They're stiff enough to stand on while doing deadlifts too, I'd defo recommend them.

If you're getting some dumbbells, I'd also like to recommend the Powerblocks. They're adjustable dumbbells, but can go pretty high - Like, high enough that by the time you can't use them for anything, you've gotten your money's worth out of them.

It's also really simple to make a wrist roller, all you need is a piece of wood for a handle and a length of rope. Chain and carbine hook is entirely optional.

What kind of training are you looking to do, OP?
>>
>>34943587
Use it for curls and light stuff like sldl.
>>
>>34944004
>>34944037

jesus christ you fucking pussies

it's less than 200 kilos

do you even realise how fucking strong wood can be?
>>
>>34944082
Actually looks pretty comfy.
>>
>>34944723
>do you even realise how fucking strong wood can be?
No, that's why I am asking.
>>
>>34944004
a fuckton actually. the strength of the 2x4 longways is incredible. Particularly when bound on the side like it is. The wood needs to flay out. and the 2x4s on the side prevent that so it would just be driven into the ground.

The weak point here is the concrete buckets and the plumb of the wood. If there was a more stable weighted base. Then you'd be able to hold over 1 ton easily.
>>
>>34945038
>1 ton
Why is that? Can wood handle more than my rack because wood is not hollow but my stand is? I thought steel > wood.

Here's the power rack I built a year ago, there's also a pull up bar at the top but I guess I didn't take a picture when I put it in.

>my steal squat stand
Gains goblin detected. Have to get up earlier in the morning than that if you want to steal my squats!
>>
>>34944871
Haha I got the exact same reply, I posted this a few months back.
And Yeah its great, i only lift there on weekends when im visiting my mom though.
>>
>>34945102
It all depends on what kind of steel and what kind of Wood, the construction and the thickness and shape... So cant really say.
Wood can be strong as fuark, but generally steel is stronger.
>>
>>34945102
1 ton is 1000kg btw
>>
>>34944723
Not to even mention the fact that the weight is on top and against the grain, making it even stronger.

Sorry, don't know how to say it in English - but that the grain is vertically aligned...how'd you say that in English?
>>
>>34945259
What exercises are you doing with it? I can imagine that everything besides cleans and jerks are not possible with such a setup?
>>
Power Cage
Weight Bench
Bars
Plates

Really all you need to get started, unless you're a dumbbell fag.
>>
Get a tall mirror and put it in front of the rack so you can pay attention to form
>>
>>34945294
Makes sense, thanks for elaborating.

>This just in, a local homosexual couple were found dead today in their own homes, crushed under what officers are referring to as "a home made guillotine". Local authorities were contacted after neighbors heard screams of "I'M FUCKING ZYZZ BRAH" followed by a loud crash. The autopsy tested positive for creatine

always the same unfunny meme
>>

Yeah use it for rack pulls and shrugs just like rippetoe
>>
>>34945382
I do lower weight than i normally do, but clean and jerks, snatches, front squats and any variation of that I can OHP after i cleaned the weight, i can do bent over rows and low weight deadlifts. I like to do jump squats at like 40-50kg after i cleaned the weight, pressed it up and lowered it to my shoulders. Ofcourse i can even barbell curl. I have a bench, but just the bench nowhere to put the bar, so i can do tricep extensions and if my buddy is over i can even do low weight bench.

Holding the free weights i can do chest flies with the bench and hu raises, lateral raises, front raises also bent over backward raises (idk if thats the proper name)

So Yeah a lot, i also have a rack somewhere not in pic ican do dips, only downside is its 2m up in the air so i cant really go to fail safely.

Problem is bigger plates make some of the exercises difficult/cumbersome and you can fuck your form much more easily.
