If /fit/ lifts (like OHP, Squat, DL) are so effective than why are all the biggest guys in the gym always doing bullshit with 5 lb dumbbells?

I'm the ONLY one in my gym that does OHP or Deadlift, honestly I feel ridiculous.

I've been going to the gym for almost 2 years and i've NEVER done squats or dead lifts.
There are plenty of other exercises that can replace those.
>>
>>34934259
because the biggest guys in the gym are most probably on steroids and you can do any ass fuck routine while on roids and gain muscle.
>>
>>34934259
I go to a commercial gym in england, and pretty much everyone does squats and deadlifts. Few people do OHP though, but it's not like they look down on it

Lighter weight allows higher reps, higher reps builds more muscle. We all know this, yet continue to recommend doing meme lifts for sets of 5.
>>
>>34934259
>why are all the biggest guys in the gym always doing bullshit with 5 lb dumbbells?

Because they roid.

Oh right.

And yet all medical research does not support it, and all bodybuilders focus on gaining strength primarily
>>
>>34934863

yeah its almost as if they're taking some kind of magic pill that makes them gain muscle no matter what.

Those lifts are not necessary if your goal is just aesthetics
>>
>>34934259
It's as simple as strength training vs endurance training
it has to do with the oxygen that your muscles absorbe.
lots of weight for less reps = muscular strength
lots of reps for less weight = muscular endurance

kinda like football players practice sprinting
basketball players practice running

You can still get a good pump with ridiculously lightweights like that, which contributes to gains, but only do that on accessories AFTER the main heavy compounds. There's a reason they're "the main lifts", the exercises that involve using the highest amount of muscles are what build more muscle, make you stronger, and tax you more.
>>
>>34935222
>>34935942
People actually still think bodybuilders and powerlifters should train differently (aside from bodybuilders just doing more accessories)

>Implying you can be small and strong af or big and weak af.

Ok
>>
>>34934699
Honesty i can agree to a certain degree, i mean you can get great strenght gains and overall gains without deadlifts.. without Squats.. nah son.
>>
>>34936050

Candito doesn't seem to be as big as he is strong
>>
>>34936072

Meh, I used to believe that but an ankle injury fucked up all my leg exercises a month ago.

For the last month I've done 0 lower body movements, no squats and no deadlifts and all my upper body lifts are progressing at a faster pace than before.

I know it won't last forever, but just putting it out there.

/fit/ tends to fall for its own memes.
>>
Semi-related: do I really need to do anything for chest beside flat bench and incline bench?

Flys and pullovers aren't very comfortable for my shoulders and I don't have cable machines.

I feel like you are trying to provide evidence of something

Examples of people focusing on strength routines:
Reg Parks
Arnold Schwarz
Ronnie Coleman
Jay Cutler
every other bodybuilder

And soccer players practice both and squat 200kg+ because you constantly switch between sprinting, jogging and jumping.

you're fucking retarded if you think bodybuilders like arnold and jay focused on strength routines. they're strong because they're huge as fuck, not the other way around
>>
>>34934259
Try lifting something heavy after working out with 5 ponders for six months.
>>
>>34936231
No they where strong because of roids.
>>
>>34936231
They did 5x5s you dumb shit. Reg Parks 5x5 is literally a 5x5

How do you even function with such a brain?
>>
>>34936155
Are you retarded. Of course if you neglect lifts your otheer aras will improve. You are probably eating the same amount as you did when you trained legs
>>
>>34936155
Im sorry to hear that anon, my guess is that since u cut out the lower body movements ur upperbody get better results due to the extra time u give ur body to "heal" granted u dont train more frequnt than u did before. in my experience with strenght training vs hyp/endurance training is that LESS is MORE.
On the other hand ive also experienced great overall strenght gains when my squat goes up.

You're surprised someone whose entire career is based around being strong for his weight is small for his strength?
>>
>>34936244

they did?

so you must have been around to watch them train.

jk, youre a dyel faggot that hasnt even lifted for 6 months pretending he knows shit.

lifting heavy is the best way to get injured for literally no extra benefit. none of these guys lift heavy if they dont have to, bur you wouldnt know shit about this bc youve never competed, let alone lifted long enough to have significant injuries pile up.

go suck a dick faggot
>>
>>34936329

that's the point
>>
>>34934699
That's just straight retarded, son.
>>
Why don't you just do both?
Do your heavy compounds to get strong and train for practical strength and yadda yadda, then burn out with some lat raises and rear delt flyes on OHP days and some skullcrushers and flyes on bench days. 3x10-12 for each exercise is fine.
Just don't be a retard and do something like 45 lb lat raises the first time just because you can OHP 1pl8 for 5.
And if you're not doing chinups or pullups, you oughta do rows, and you might as well throw in some curls and wrist roller action too. Don't let some SS evangelist upset you brah - If it's anything to you, Rippetoe hisself said that curls were his guilty pleasure and that having big arms is fun.
>>
>>34936661
so you have one day dedicated for one of the four compound lifts. does it mean that you train bodyparts once a week? fit says it is wrong and you should at least do them twice.

I'm following Texas Method, which I suppose you could call the sequel to SS - You can read about it here: http://www.t-nation.com/training/texas-method
Apart from how tired you can get on volume days, there's ample room for adding light accessory/bodybuilding work.
I round off volume days with some curls and wrist rolling, light days with French press and flyes, and intensity days with lat raises, front raises and rear delt flyes, and maybe some more wrist rolling.

Just don't pick exercises that take too much out of you, and you'll be perfectly fine.

>>
>>34936871
It feels like it's going really well - I'm progressing on all lifts in a near linear fashion, and it doesn't wear me out like Stronglifts 5x5 did. Not to diss it; it's a great program, but I've got a pretty busy schedule that made it a bit hard to be fully rested for three max effort sessions a week, and forget about doing any accessories afterwards.

I'm probably gonna stick with Texas Method until the gains dry out, and by then I'll hopefully have good enough stats to not be ashamed to ask the fellows in /plg/ for help.

If you're interested in reading up on the Texas Method, I'll warmly recommend Justin Lascek's books on it: http://70sbig.com/books/
