I do both. Though back squats are a main (5 reps) and fronts an accessory (8 reps). I like back squats for the overall strength benefit and I like the round butt it gives as bitches do actually look at a dudes ass. I do front squats as they're a better quad builder than leg extensions which are meant to fuck you up.
But yeah if you're purely a bodybuilder/aestheticss fag you may not want a bubble butt. Lots of early bbers didn't do back squats and just did front squats as they thought a big butt on a dude was a female traint and not manly lol.

Front squats and back squats are largely similar, though back squats trades a little quad focus for lower back+glute/ham focus, which are already present in deadlifts, and also the reason why you can carry more weight in a back squat.
If you want to be strong all around, do front squats, as deadlifts are fucking easy to progress so you'll grow those muscles easily through it, but quads can lag behind especially if your back squat form is less than perfect

I was having a lot of wrist trouble with back squats (even without weight on the bar and neutral wrists) and starting front squats has been a godsend for getting around that.

I'm an old fag. I've seen too many of my friends ruin their lumbar spine forever with back squats. It's the damage you can't see or feel that ruins your back. Every struggling squat morning compounds on itself and after a decade all that shit will come back to haunt you.
If you try to struggle thru a front squat, you dump the weight. It's just a much safer exercise.

not >>34924466 but I can tell you that heavy ATG front squats are the worst. it's hard to breath (for me), it puts more emphasis on your back to keep you more upright than highbar, and it puts the bar on your shoulders so if you're bony like I am, it you get bruises afterwards. They're a GOAT tier exercise though, would recommend to anyone serious about lifting.

He's actually not front squatting there. those are rack holds, done for a few sets of however many seconds to build core stability and get used to a heavy weight on your front rack position. This matches his PR back squat of 305kg. He has done at least 230 for doubles on front squat. Ilya has been shown with 290 and did 320 during last years worlds, and since he claims to have a back squat of 363 but he doesn't go near it much, his front squat is likely far above 320.

i do back squats because i am nowhere near flexible enough to front squat properly. if i front squat, i want to be able to do it without risk of injury, which means going ass to grass. i am trying to get more flexible though but there is fucking zero info out there which is not disputed highly. same with lifting but at least /fit/ gives somewhat coherent advice.
