i think it actually goes back to the imperial english system. mericans just didn't want to change, as ironic as it sounds (splitting from england and all). wacky units are not all that old though, have a look at english currency up until the 1960's when they switched from penny pfarthings over to a base 10 system. it was til the 80's that they still honored the system after the official switch just because some people who couldn't be arsed to switch complained

It does have some perks. While the Celsius is based from 0 to 100, the Fahrenheit scale actually ranges from 0 to 100 in practice: around 100 in the summers and 0 or so in the winters. That's convenient. It's also the only one I can think of.

Using the mathematical argument then you could say that the metric system uses the smallest value first and goes increasingly.
Which is how all other measurements work, you go consecutively from the smallest possible unit to the highest which is why it makes sense.
