GS is more upper body oriented. I think it's the best one for guys that only want to get joocy on the gym and never do any sport or competitive lifting.

I think both SS & GS are by far the better novices routines.

I did SL (and the modified version in the sticky) for like 6-8 weeks. T-rex mode is real. it's not the worst thing in the world though. I've barely had to touch my legs since then and I guess I learned how to lift. Added fly's and hammer curls, dropped the squats and deadlifts (not completely), and went to hypertrophy reps.

I'm not going all the way to the gym for 20 min workout. I need 1 hour or else I don't feel it.

It really is for the absolute beginner with 0 gym experience.

I did it last week coz I'm any idiot, repped too fast at my max and lost lat tightness

was kinda red around my belly button from rolling the barbell over it but that's it. gym wasn't exactly empty, nobody even cared
>>
>>31922909
I took routines from Never Gymless, Overcoming Gravity, with some other random gymnastics training routines. I'd do a writeup, but tbh judging by the calisthenics general getting laughed off the board, why bother
>>
My gym has no squat rack with safeties and squats are just now starting to get hard for me. What am I supposed to do? Am I supposed to keep the "linear progression" on squats 3 times a week or is it ok to use the same weight and increase weekly? I don't really care about lower body anyway.
>>
>>31922283
I did SL then moved onto SS once I bought the book, SL's volume is crazy for anyone past that first 6 week period, now I'm moving onto Advanced SS (for background I did a shitty brosplit with a shitty attitude for about a year max twice a week, saw mediocre chest, lat and shoulder development).

Biggest change I noticed apart from the obvious strength was my legs and arse, they got fookin juicy. My low back, chest and shoulders all saw significant improvement too, and my arms would've kept up had I been consistent with the pull ups and dips.

Also when I stopped SL I struggled to row 50kg, now I can do 1pl8 for 5 with ease and literally haven't rowed since then, clearly the Deadlift and Chins are good enough to not warrant it
>>
>>31923131
Yeah Blaha looks like complete ass but it is a solid routine.
>>
>>31923162

I know that lasy line is stupid though since squats train "hip drive" and probably general strength and god knows what else necessary to the program, not to mention being the yardstick for progression in the program.

>>
i'm still there.
>>
>>31923192
I imagine I would do it more often if I trained for lower reps, but I'm a weakfag who trains for 5 reps and I can usually do the next higher weight for 3 reps or more
If you're doing 1rm I imagine it's more common to do the roll, but you might aswell get a spotter for that
>>
>>31923067
>essentially linear
>doesn't know when i switched to advanced ss

>>
>>31923240
I lift at home and have to squat, dead, bench and press alone.
It's pretty easy, but I'll probably hit the gym once it opens next year.

I do 3*5 and when I increase the week next week I can only really do at best like 3*3, but I try for 5 anyway and that's why I've perfected the roll of shame.
>>
closest I ever came is squatting 3x a week
>>
>>31923255
point is you did STARTING strength for well over a year, didn't even do it consistently and then had the fucking balls to talk shit. bet you didn't even read the fucking book. exactly the kind of idiot who fails on SS.

>>
>>31923221
Something like this happened last year, in my gym there is an entire wall with mirrors by the dumbbells. I was resting between sets with my headphones on, and I kind of was daydreaming, until at the corner of my eye in the mirror I saw a guy benching. I could see he looked as if he was struggling on the bench with 80kg down on his chest. I didn't know if he was okay with the weight or not, but he kind of gave me a gentle nod as if to say can you help me buddy so I ran over and helped lift it off. Thing is though I was a hungry skelleton who could barely deadlift 60kg so it was a bit of an embarrassing struggle to help him

The only repercussion for adding weight less often is that you gain strength slower. If you're fine with that, then go ahead.

Progressing squats slower might also hinder your deadlift progression, but I don't really know; I'm just talking out my ass.

Never understood why people force SS on beginners so much

Back when I started bb, i always did 5x8-12 on main movements and 3x10 on accessories (shit tons of volume on ppl routine once a week)
Reached 135kg bench after 20 months, but squat strength progression was utter shit (140kg)(although legs responded extremly well to high reps - hypertrophy wise)
I didn't know shit about lifting then, yet i made better gains than 95% of people i see now post in cbt and say they did 1yr+ of strength programs

I just don't get your obsession with strength.
My thougts are that "strength" training has become a trend lately and every fucking faggot keeps saying shit like "you gotta build a decent strength base first" yet they all look dyel

Im not trying to criticize SS, i think it's a good program for STRENGTH, but I think there are better programs for a beginner who just wants to pack some muscle/look good

I don't get it either. To me it's like expecting to get bigger by pushing against an immovable wall (strength), as opposed to by doing hard fucking work (hypertrophy type training). The strengthfags will always be dyels while guys who bust their ass with higher volume will look better. Can you tell me your program?

>>
Guys. There's nothing wrong with doing a strength routine with hypertrophic lifts on the side. You can still get strong and look good doing this.
>>
>>31925803
>>31925474
Basically,

>Weak lifter = little room for growth. Benching 30kg will make you look like someone who benches 30kg or heavier if you're on a hypertrophy program. Sure, if you bulk and cut with minimal (if any) strength gains you can look fairly good by normal people standards but you'll still be limited by how much you can lift.

>Stronger lifter (background in powerlifting, eg. SS) = more weight can be moved, which means a larger response to the stress.

The way I described it sounds broscience-y, but the general idea is that someone who starts weak will be limited by that weakness, whereas someone who makes an effort to improve their strength before progressing will have more room to grow.
>>
>>31926927
If pic is you then you need to cut, your lack of visible muscle isn't the fault of SS

I did for a year age 14-15. Start > Finish
50kg > 170kg x 5 Squat
50kg > 170kg x 5 Deadlift
50kg >100kg x 5 Bench Press
30kg > 100kg x 5 Bent Over Row
30kg > 55kg x 5 Overhead Press

At 80kg 5'10, 14% bodyfat. After I cut to 10% bodyfat I was 77kg. Was a swole as fuck 15 year old, that could buy alcohol without being asked for ID.

Dips? Wat? What did your routine look like? What about power cleans and chins?
>>
So I squat 1.5 x bodyweight and deadlift 2 x bodyweight. Lifts are stalling. My 1 rep max is 3 pl8 something on deadlifts and squats for 1 rep max is 2 pl8 25. If I do squats three times a week; I find I fail a lot of reps because the weight is too heavy.

I bench 1 rep max of 1 pl8 since SS does jack shit for upper body.

Is it time to move on to something else? I eat like a motherfucker so my collarbones are no longer visiable; I have a gut now; and I have a layer of fat all over my legs.
>>
>>31932538
It's time to move on. According to SS you move on when you deload squats 3 times and it sounds like you should be at or near that point if you are following the program. (Stall 3 times in a row = deload 10%).
>>
>>31932567
you mean reset. a deload is not a reset
>>
>>31932567
Ok; so I'm strong enough for hypertrophy shit right? I can curl a 70 pound straight bar for 5 reps and dumbbell incline press 50 pounds for 5 reps.

Am I strong enough? I just want to build muscle; I dont really care about Candito sleeper strength
>>
>>31932567
>According to SS you move on when you deload squats 3 times

This is bullshit, where is this in the SS book or in PP? SS doesn't even mention deloads.

>tfw my $300 pair of designer A.P.C. skinny jeans no longer fit me
>tfw my favorite short shorts dont fit me anymore
>tfw my old shorts ripped near my asshole
>tfw I got gay butt now and thighs touch
>tfw girls slap my ass and pinch it and comment how nice my ass are (but no mention of my upper body)

Why did I do Starting Strength? Why? I should of listened. Now I got thunder thighs, stretch marks on my thighs and shoulders and all for what 2.5 pl8 squat? I dont even care about strength.

There is dips for triceps, I had weight on them, I do chins up with 30kg but it had become to easy I should had weight.
I don't do powerclean I feel inconfortable with them
>>
>>31932702
A.P.C is hardly designer mayne

Nothin to cry over

>>31932667
You're right. I got SL and SS end points confused. Either way it's time for the poster to stop SS.

>>31932605
No one ever agrees on shit like this, but I'd just switch to a decent hypertrophy program like PPL or PHAT.

Your bench is a bit weak, but your other option is going to TM or a weekly progression program if linear progression has really stopped working for a while. And it's obviously going to take a while for significant strength gains on weekly progression.
>>
>>31932803
My bench is still going up. My lanky arms get in the way of doing some real damage on bench too.

>still believing the sticky despite the following

>SS victims look like absolute shit
>rippetoe thinks a 4000 kcal surplus is okay for skinny people
>not a single bodybuilder or fitness model uses SS or similar strength routines

the sticky really should be changed. this whole idea that a routine with so few exercising days and exercises is the best for a beginner is insane. this nihilistic bodybuilding needs to stop.

I just put in more 2 cardio days in between and have 2 rest days. I say it's best for beginners like me because it's not too bulky too look at and it's very simple to pick up and keep on doing it until further success.

Learn how to fail safely from high bar position then you will be fine outside of the rack.

I think the Sticky should have ICF5x5 and Greyskull LP added in for people interested in more upper body development.
>>
>start doing SS
>uni gets really busy
>stop bulking, lose gains
>rinse and repeat

Anyone else know this feel? I started SS over a year ago, but in total I've probably only done it about six months.
