Its less efficient than the modern squat clean, so it only got used by people who weren't able to squat clean for whatever reason. And since those people basically never do well in oly comps and there's basically no reason to split clean if you're not doing oly it died out.
Better question is why didn't the split jerk die out. Lack of flexibility due to too much OHPing perhaps.

Very few people have the build required to make the squat jerk reliable (or even possible) and even then its an extremely unforgiving movement compared to the other jerk styles. Its less a matter of muscle flexibility and more one of joint ROM. The power jerk isn't really advantaged over the split jerk, so both stuck around.
A fair number of oly lifters don't OHP at all, so its unlikely to be that.

it's actually still up for debate. while some just call him "The Brief-Builder". other have suggested his name may actually be Montgomery Snicklebottoms. what we know for sure though, is that his routine included, amongst other things, the Royal Crumpet Press an a lot of Dingery Kahuna Squats. It's still unknown what set and rep ranges we're talking about here. studies have shown that 5x20 for about 3,47 years seems to be a good guess.
