I intend to make the ring I propose with, and I plan to propose within the year. I want to be confident in myself when I make it, and am going to spend some time practicing with copper or whatever else that's cheap I can use.

I come asking for any resources you might be able to provide me with, and with a few questions.

Examples I've found of others doing the same:

I see two methods, making a cast or soldering a band closed. Which will produce a better result?

I envision a "solitaire", single gem on a yellow gold band to match her Aggie ring.

I'd imagine a cast and tumble-polish would get you a nice, smooth and shiny ring.

What is the advantage of a tumble polish instead of with a dremel?

Not him, but I've found it to be more even overall, plus it work hardens it a little.

Jeweler here. You will want to fabricate that. Half round wire and premade prong head. You can even get the prong heads with a 'seat' already notched but you'll really wantto get a diamond burr to make the notches (seat) nice and crisp.

So:

cut wire (theres a chart to determind length/ring size), file ends flat, bend so that the ends come tofether perfecty and without gaps (not round here), solder that shit, then saw on the solder mark, file ends (45 degrees for 4 prong heads, whatever it is for 6 prong), solder that shit together with the head in between, dremil/flexshaft with burr to cut the seat, set thw stone (youtube how or whatever), polish (should just need rouge, since the wire and head will already be pretty finely surfaced), wash that shit off, BAM, do your new wife

After the first soldering you use a plastic or rawhide hammer to round it on a steel mandel. If its nit the right size either cut it down(if too big) or restart (if undersize). but you will run through first in silver or whatev. Sorry im p fugged up
