So this kid in my class is making a quadrupedal robot. With 4 servos. Without knees.

I'm trying to think if there's any possible way to get this thing walking?
Spare using momentum to throw itself, I just don't see it going well.
Thoughts? Also robot dump general.

Designs like this seem like a much better use of four servos
>>
It should still be able to shuffle: Rotate each leg forwards one at time then rotate them all backwards simultaneously.
>>
It can be done. Might be goofy and involve lots of shuffling, but it can be done.
One option:
>Shift all four servos forward to stick bot's ass out and get more weight on the back feet
>Spread feet slowly; rears will grip and fronts will slide
>Shift weight to front feet by angling legs backwards some (while maintaining spacing)
>Scoot legs inward again; rears will slide while fronts grip
There are other ways, but I can't think of any that don't involve shuffling/sliding feet. And I suspect it will only ever work on a smooth, consistent surface.

Put slippery material on one part of each foot, grippy material on another. Then you can set friction based on the leg angle.

I've actually ordered some servos to try this out myself, see how clean I can make it all.
Anyway, I was thinking of using a fifth servo with a weight, but that's kinda cheating, your idea's much closer to what I'm after.
This poor kid's never gonna figure this shit out.

I'm curious if this'd just end up pushing it backwards? Hope not.

Thought of this, or angled bristles, but then it'd be hard to reverse.
I guess with your idea you could have them symmetrical, so you can grip or loosen either way...
Imma try everything suggested so far, these have all been great!

Springy legs, like the ones amputees use.

I built a 4 servo quadruped that did this. Except I used knees with springs on them. If you build it right you can get it to hop forward.

I thought and hoped that was a shipping container with walker legs... I was disappointed, but on reflection it is still cool.

RHex is my favorite Boston Dynamics robot. It's so spunky and amusing. They ought to put one on Mars.

Put vibrators on each leg to buzz it around and then tone in timing to manipulate direction.

Use old xbox controllers
