Cut the bottoms off all your 1-gallon milk jugs and save them. When you plant, shove a milk jug over each seedling to create a tiny greenhouse for them.

I really love ideas that maximize growing capacity in a limited space

Hi /diy/. First time growing tomatoes here. Here is my operation so far. I started these all from seeds around the end of March. I've been learning a lot. Originally I had them on my south-facing windowsills spread out through the house. We recently had 2 weeks of cloudy/rainy days so I switched to a combination of 2700K CFLs/incandescent bulbs at first, but I read they were only good for flowering, so I switched over. Right now I'm using 4 23W 6500K CFL bulbs to grow this batch of 33 plants in my living room.

They grew very quickly after I switched to artificial lighting, but now the new leaves at the top are starting to yellow. I know I have to repot but I don't have the pots for this many of them yet. I will in a few days. I haven't fertilized them at all. Does anyone have any tips?

Another pic.
It was also very windy a few days ago. At least 15 mph winds. I want to start hardening them off but I'm afraid the wind will kill them. I'm waiting to repot first.

Usually the yellowing like in the pic is a result of either low magnesium low nitrogen or root bound. Repottng and a little organic vegetable food should sort it right out. I find food grade 5 gallon buckets with some holes in the bottom for drainage work perfect for tomatoes. I source mine from the local donut shop. Doing great work brother keep it up.

When you replant plant deep. Remove the leaves from the Bottom two-thirds of the plant and plant the entire stalk below the dirt line. Roots will grow out from the entire stalk creating a really strong robust root system. This will help to keep your plants hydrated during the heat of the summer thus creating a longer Harvest period

Making a planter box. Should I put some irrigation system in it before I fill it up?

Begin hardening off as soon as possible. The quicker you get repotted and get them real sunlight the better. Start with a few hours a day and extend time every day. Watching closely for leaf droop and sun scorching.

You can but for raised beds its not absolutely necessary. Drip irrigation is a good choice. Relatively cheap and pretty easy to install.

holy crap really? I've been just sticking them in the ground and barely touching them, I am going to give this a try this year. Does this method also work with tomatillos?

Because you can make more cake with the same amount of berries than you can making pie. Pietards put all the berries into 1 thing and totally overdo it. Cake on the other hand rations out the berries so you can enjoy them for a very extended period.

Do terrariums belong here?

These are my first two successful moss terrariums made about three or four weeks ago from moss I grabbed from some local trails.

The one on the left has some weird white balls growing all over the place, but they don't seem to be hurting anything.
