Has anyone been able to make a bit of a business out of it working out of an apartment?

How do you sterilize substrate in volume? Will an oven at 300F do?

>working out of an apartment

no

>Will an oven at 300F do?

no

You need temperature/pressure to kill all the contaminates. Commercial growers pipe 500*F steam into their entire grow houses + substrate for a full day or more to sterilize everything.

Is there any risk if a crop goes bad, or does it just ruin the materials?
>>
You could run a for profit out of an apartment, but they would not be culinary mushrooms.
They would be of the psychedelic variety, and they make tons of money.

if the crop dies, you die

its will ruin your appartement if you don't control the humidity adequately,

mushroom grow in a low of humidity and if that humidity is all over your appartement then its will help spreading mold and rot the wood infrastructure of the building,
better use something like megadome.

or a very clean shed outside.

still here OP ?,
if you wish making money in making mushroom,

for oyster the best substrate is hard wood pellet for fireplace.

a 5 gallon full of colonised wood pellet will give about 5 pound of fresh mushroom in about 60 day (2 month).

a 40 lbs bag of hardwood pellet for a fireplace will fill 5 bucket,

so a total of about 25 lbs of mushroom fresh mushroom can be harvested from a 40 lbs bag.

if 12$ per lbs
12$ x 25 lbs = 300$ worth of money from a 40 lbs bag of hardwood pellet that cost 8$

liquid culture is an awesome way of inoculing a shitton of bucket,

its so damn easy that in some third world country they give the job to people with pĥysical handicap.

I'm here.

Don't they have to sterilize the substrate? That gets very expensive.
>>
>>988305
well many compagny don't sterilise these pellet,

some do some pasterisation wich is easier to do than sterilisation,

one could make a boiler system to sterilise the substrate like this

http://www.mushroomvideos.com/images/55_Gallon_drum_sterilizer_system.jpg

kind of cheap to make,

i would say even if you don't pasterise i think the proccess used to make these pellet already kill most of the germ.

and you still need hot water to hydrate these pellet,
you need about the same quantity of water in weight as the quantity of pellet

40 lbs of water for 40 lbs of substrate.
(18.1 L of water)

the hot water might help if you don't have any success.

>>988305
most of the time there is not much contam that is gonna contam wood pellet.

its easier to do than mushroom that grow on manure like white button mushroom

but not having to sterilisate the substrate don't mean that we don't have to do for other stuff,

if you grow it on a small scale you migh get away with little equipement, but if you want to go big and make lot of money, its good to invest in equipement, lean how to use petri dish and how to do an isolate to get a good starting sample to grow mushroom.

myself i am gonna try to grow some about 5 bucket with 40 lbs of substrate and see if there any good in making money.

Too much misinformation ITT. Try here instead: >>>/out/753269

You don't need anything more than a stock pot or shock tank/tub for equipment. Everything else is logs, bags/buckets/grow containers, water, fans (optional), and plastic sheeting. You don't need to sterilize at all in fact that can be counter productive as it kills everything including beneficial microbes that prevent infections. If you want to do mass production you can still use the same simple items. machines like this of course make things easier, however, I doubt this is the scale in which you want to do mushrooms.

The type of fungi dictates special equipment like refrigeration (AC unit in a room is all you need for a lot of stuff or just your own fridge on very small scale) like for Enokitake. Then again some people say to refrigerate everything, but that isn't actually needed.

make some grainspawn with non-sterile grain or agar strain isolates without a flow hood and see how you go. yes mushroom farms pasteurize button mushroom substrate by just cooking out compost. but they still produce bulk spawn with massive autoclaves.

The most important tool for your operation will be a pressure cooker or even better an autoclave for sterilization.
The bigger the better, because it will be the limiting factor for the size of the batches you can produce.
Your workspace can be as simple as a clean table in a clean room with a bunsenburner in the middle.
Learn to make agar-agar cultures on petri dishes, grain spawn and liquid cultures.
Everything until this point can be done in an apartment.
From there you can go on inoculating straw, logs, wood chips, horse poo and mixtures of all kinds of different materials.
With many substrates you can work without pressure sterilization and outside in a garden or cooperate with a small scale farmer to have enough space available.
So... yes, you can work out of your apartment and turn in into a profitable business.

unless you are growing white button mushroom
horse poo (horse manure) is kind of useless unless you grow some magic mushroom, also the shroomery is mostly people growing magic mushroom so .
>>
>>988397
>make some grainspawn with non-sterile grain or agar strain isolates without a flow hood and see how you go

I have and it is just fine. You just have to rethink your methods. You don't try to inoculate a mass of growing medium so large that the spores can't cover it and protect it before mold starts. You use very small batches and add new medium to it as it is ready.

>>988434
No need to sterilize substrate for culinary mushrooms. That's the biggest difference between culinary fungi and drug addict mushroom methods.
>>
>>988496
>HP is kind of useless unless you grow some magic mushroom
not true, you can add HP for several species that grow on straw for greater yield

>shroomery is mostly people growing magic mushroom
true, but there is a vast amount of easy to understand information that can be applied to culinary species
also there is a section for culinary species

Most scientific or commercial information cannot be accessed, understood and applied as easily.
If you can recommend any better source go ahead an post it.

>No need to sterilize substrate for culinary mushrooms. That's the biggest difference between culinary fungi and drug addict mushroom methods.
You don't NEED sterilized substrate or laboratory methods for either.
Both culinary and psychotropic mushrooms will grow much more successful and faster if you use them.
If you wanna go commercial, you'd be stupid to not use an autoclave.

>If you wanna go commercial, you'd be stupid to not use an autoclave.

Most commercial culinary mushroom growers don't use an autoclave.
