anyone have tips for controlling stray litter from a litterbox? I've got one of those mats that's supposed to collect the litter, but a lot of times the littler goes off the side of it (it's fairly small) or the cat jumps well over the mat and litter goes everywhere. Messiest cat I've ever had

I was thinking of making it so that the cat has to walk on some kind of corrugated cardboard "platform" to get to the box (this would be similar to the kind you see in cat scratchers where it's a bunch of cardboard ends glued together)

I have budah domes for my cats. And mats that are supposed to clean their feet when they exit. Nothing fucking works. I'll find litter all the way across the house from the litter boxes. The litter grains get trapped in between their toes and they carry it until it gets untrapped. As far as I've been able to tell there's no way around this. Fucking cats are going to be fucking cats.

Fully covered litterboxes with a door work best in my experience to keep the litter in the box.

If you don't want to buy those make a small frame and hang towels over it, fold them under the box on 3 sides, leave it hanging to the floor on the last side so they can get in, put a lid on it if needed.it will keep most litter in the box and the rest caught on the side. You could also hang some sort of net, from above.

For the steps some fluffy carpet works best, unfortunately my cats also enjoy it for pissing on, so I just live with them cat trails around the house

I'm currently trying to build a temperature monitor for my PC, with the data being displayed by my Arduino Leonardo, which currently controls volume on my PC and should continue to do so.

Now, I did quite a bit of googling and, apparently, getting the data is kinda funky.
Supposedly, this piece of software:
http://openhardwaremonitor.org/documentation/
Has a .dll that I can access through C#.
However, that's the kind of stuff that I know nothing about. Do I just need to put the .dll into my project folder and reference it in the program or does it need to be put into the Windows system .dll folder?
Also, how do I even use serial communication with my Arduino? Would the fact that the COM port is virtual and might change occasionally (It varies between 3, 4 and 5 for me) cause issues?

I'm not even sure where this stuff lies on the /g/ and /diy/ divide, but I thought you bunch might be less self-fellating and retarded.

Also, I have never used C# before but I know C++ and have no problem with using another language for this, as long as it's part of Visual Studio.

So I just got 2 small dremel mini power tools from the 80s.
One is a small tile saw, one is a small 1 inch belt sander/disc sander.

Both have these small motors, which need oiled. It doesnt say in the manuals where the oil holes are though.

Obviously the small hole on the ass end is an oil hole.
Are the 2 holes at the top oil holes or not?

Ive never oiled a motor before, just a very small amount? I have the 3 in 1 "motor" oil for electric motors.
>>
>>976823
Im not a professional on the subject, but I dont know of any dremel that needs oil. Also that hole is threaded, I think it might be an unused mounting hole.

I somehow found the tile saw manual online, and it indeed said to only oil that one hole.
The two motors look identical so yeah.

Not sure why it didnt make it clear in the sander manual, I have a paper manual for that.
I guess they dont even look like oil holes so maybe it was common sense 30 years ago when you had to routinely oil stuff.

Yes.

Get a large boiling pot of water going on the stove. Get thick stick welding/oxy fuel cutting leather gloves. Grab a big pair of strong tongs. Grab cat as though it was a lobster. Dunk in water and hold in place with tongs till cooked tender.

Then, throw the cat in the garbage with the litter box and vacuum up the rest of litter. Take it all to the curb on trash day.

Finally, purchase a smal medium to medium to larger breed dog and remove the large Swedish inspired black cock from your ass or your wife's ass and become a man because you don't own a cat anymore.

Hockey puck ones that cover up the bar portion are a joke. Bolt cutter can get them apart easily. Especially big ones.

Bosnian Bill does a ton of lock reviews and picks locks for a hobby. He's a locksmith. Why wouldn't he be good to see on youtube? He has lots of recommendations dude.

Hockey puck lock work better if thick sheet metal shield the top portion and the bottom hangs out of the box shield over the lock laps the bar goes through.

But most of those are master lock tier garbage that can be picked with a zip tie or paper clip.

Good thieves pick locks. They don't break them because bolt cutters make you suspicious as fuck.

Were you raped by a cat or something? I don't understand why you have such a strong opinion of what type of pets people should have. I've had a ton. Dogs are great but they are high fucking maintenance. Cats are cool too and have historically been pretty important to our survival.

Anyways, wash your hands when you handle soiled cat litter. Seems pretty simple. If you keep the litter box cleaned it doesn't smell. The clay surrounds a clumps to the piss and shit and then the cat buries it. My only problem with cats is cat hair and tracking cat litter across the house. My solution is a vacuum. Dog owners have dog hair problems too. And their houses smell like dog. That's the price of having a pet.

ask a cardiologist :(
a nurse, doctor or other medical professional could tell you. I believe it's something to do with peripulminory vein circuit. which is what its measuring. excitation of the heart. so it could mean 4mv with reference to the isoelectric baseline.

what is the testing setup aparatus for this test? where do all the leads go and connections connect?

I assume the 4mV is the maximum observed voltage allowed received or amplified from the electrodes?

It's not an exam. These pictures are from a standard that's behind a paywall, and the guy at the company didn't let me take screenshots, saying he'll get billed for it.

I'm studying EE, and one of my classes is "independent laboratory". I was stupid enough to do mine at a company, and because my connection doesn't answer his phone/says he'll call back but doesn't, I'm behind as fuck.
Also, neither him, nor my university consul can tell my what the fuck p-v is, and I've got 'bout a month to fucking plan and build a cmrr testing machine for an ECG with people only helping me when they feel like it.

oh shit that's not complete. your university should have a subscription for a paywall so you can just get it from the IEEE store or library. you need the full document EC11 and subsection 4.2.11 describes the legal procedure which has been approved by the FDA.

so matching this diagram with EC11, you supply a 60hz, 20V rms signal. not some bullshit 8v p-v signal. and you should get a signal not exceeding 1mv p-p RTI. not 4mV p-v. its an extremely simple circuit.

then there's also EC13 which also describes the specific circuit you need to build and exact test procedure.

But fuck me, this american standard is a lot easier to read. The one I read felt like it was written by someone who's got no idea what he's writing about.

But if this one uses p-p, which, I'm guessing, means peak-to-peak, then is it a reasonable assumption that p-v means peak-value, as in 1V p-v = 2V p-p?

Oh, praised be Krishna, the last thing you linked had a definition for it:
"3.30 peak-to-valley (p-v): Amplitude of a wave (e.g., sinusoidal or QRS) measured from the upper side of its positive peak to the upper side of its negative peak to eliminate from the measurement the thickness of the display trace or printed trace."

So it's just regular ol' peak-to-peak, right? The thickness thing would only make sense in a graphical representation, and I just need the value.

Thanks, anon.

you'd be surprised how much, "it works, dont fuck with it" there is in engineering. in australia, some of our vehicle design rules passed into law are actual fucking photocopies of EU documents. you go to the online law library and the laws are just literal fucking photocopies complete with headers and watermarks from EU documents.

that is fucking weird. that there is a special term just so that technicians too stupid to understand that a line has thickness that they need to engage in a special procedure to read it.

also, the IEEE recognizes the american standard. and the IEEE is the IEC. so its weird that you have a different document. it must be like 40 years old. funny how engineers like to teach kids from things they thought were cool when they learnt it at university. I have the only motorized mountain bike in australia. sure there are the stealth bikes but they're 6kw which makes them an electric motorbike. I built it specifically for navigating rough tracks around tasmania so i had some very specific requirements. it runs lifepo4 headway batteries and a BBS-02 motor. you want lifepo4 for a mountainbike because its easy to crash them all the time and you dont want your dick to explode when the batteries burst into a fireball. they were far more expensive than lipo but safer and have better high current draw discharge curves and life specfications.(4000 discharge cycles until 80% capacity compared to about 300 cycles for lipo.)

bafang makes even better kits now. they are expensive but they are the best bike kits around. the bbs-02 was fully programable mid mount which let me set the ramp up time, power curve a whole heap of settings for my application on the controller. most controllers wont let you start from a stall condition.

hub motors are not suitable for off-road use.

ok. sorry if this is asking to be spoon fed but what is the fundamental difference between this and a regular pickup? Don't they both pickup electromagnetic radiation? Yes, but the hardware store might not have them so you may have to find a specialty store or order online.

Yes, but only if you're using it to control relays in a separate circuit.

To reverse polarity using just the switch you want either a DPDT switch, or a purpose made 'polarity switch'.

So I'm built a folding beerpong table, but this was my first DIY project, and I suck at using a circular saw, so the legs aren't exactly even. Is there a simple way to even out the legs that doesn't involve taking them off the table? I was thinking cut pieces of rubber or cork glued/screwed to the bottom of the short leg(s).
Also, this was the design that I followed:

https://www.reddit.com/r/uofm/comments/3extqo/i_made_a_michiganthemed_folding_beer_pong_table/

I need a peg or rubber stopper or something to place near the pivot point to stop the legs from opening too far. I know exactly the kind of piece I need, because I've seen it on other things that fold up, but my searches aren't turning.

Pic is mfw I thought I did a good job cutting the planks for the legs, but didn't.

No, as you can expect that their phases will be different and due to slight differences in output frequency, the phase difference will vary. In other words, without synchronization, they'll be fighting with each other at least part of the time.

You can rectify their outputs and with a suitable balancing scheme you can get 2kW worth of DC, though.

Short answer: no.
Long answer: if you have two inverters that are exactly the same, you can get an old electromechanical phase-balance or an old synchronizing relay off embay. Wire them so that they are paralleled when in phase and will trip off if one drops out. That being said, it would probably be cheaper to just buy the right inverter instead of two smaller ones and a $200-400 synchronizer.

Oh and put a breaker between the two in case one drops out and you push a shitload of current backwards through the drive circuit.

Best solution is a high sided box or covered box. If your cat will tolerate it, a drop down box.

One of my cats hate all the above solutions if her pooping diarrhea outside the box was any indication.

The only solution in my case was to make a maze to the boxes. There is at least 1x90 degree turn to enter the box area. She doesn't get cloister phobic because the walls are away from the box and most of the litter dislodge when they shift weight to turn corners. It's an isolated area so I deal with kicked out litter once a week with the vacuum when I scoop the poop. I use the Silicon crystal litter so no clumping to deal with daily. Only needs changing every 3-4 weeks and most people are surprised to find we have cats or are just being polite (which would be a lot of people.)
>>
>>979494
cool thanks. I hadn't thought of including an angle, good idea!

As for the crystal (no clumping) litter, I'm not sure how I feel about that, I've always used (and like) clumping litter. I can scoop out the clumps and not have to change the entire litter box very often (just add litter to replace what is scooped out). It seems like any non-clumping litter would make a bigger mess as the urine would ruin the litter but not be in a nice neat clump that's easily removed. Thoughts?

>>
>>979532
clumping litter.

pros: clumps, can be scooped in clumps
cons: literally everything else

standard (non-clumping) clay-style litter can still be scooped, you lose/toss far less each time because it doesn't form huge blocks saturated with urine. Also typically smells less long-term, as the clay components are a far better odor capture medium. oh, and its cheaper.

Get a litterbox with a flap (or door) and activated charcoal filter, hide it in a closet with the door cracked (or a cat door), and you will never notice the smell. Can't be said for clumping litters or an open pan, though (even some top-entry boxes don't really seal closed like a flap/door)
>>
>>979602
where does the pee go in non clumping litter? Might be worth looking into for the cost savings alone, although a 35lb bucket of tidy cats clumping can be had for around $12....and that'll last me a couple months
>>
>>979605
non-clumping litter absorbs liquids just fine; the difference is it doesn't "clump".

In the extreme case (multiple cats, multiple weeks) it'd probably end up like soggy cereal. Essentially each little bit of clay will absorb moisture to its limit but unlike clumping litters this doesn't cause them to become sticky.

If you're in a sane (1-2 cats) environment and change the litter on garbage days, the amount of moisture capacity remaining in the clay is still going to be really high after being used over and over. Generally the more wetted/heavy clay will end up at the bottom (esp. if your cats dig and move the litter around like mine) and dry will stay near the top, leaving a decent sand-like surface (and no odor) until you're ready to throw the entire thing out.

If you have particularly wet cats, use a litter pan liner as well (or plastic garbage bag -- they are the same)

So I snatched pic related brushed aluminium enclosure off curbside. It appears to have been some sort of HV testing station. The bakelite work area caught my eye as did the shape of it. considering how well the bakelite cleaned up i'm thinking about reusing the enclosure.

So far I have considered turning it into a mix desk, some sort of moog-esq synth box (what to do with all the flat space?) or filling it with SoC/microcontroller dev boards, covering the flat area with breadboard and setting up a box that would let me prototype ALL the circuits. The last option sounds most appealing as it will let me develop everything else (into robotics and automaton for reference), but i'm open to any idea. I have even considered some sort of electronic version of battleship where the facing panel is all sub-like switches and gauges on a control panel (maybe even a small 640/480 LCD), with the play area on the flat.

The college Im going to has an Electrical Engineering section that allows for a minor in Robotics and an Mechanical Engineering section that has a minor in Aerospace Engineering. Both are really appealing to me and ive heard mixed responses as to what major has the most job opportunities so Im very confused now. Does anyone who's gone through a similar education plan know if it would be worth it to look into doing a dual major in both EE and ME? If not I guess personally it comes down to which major has the most information that I could just look up if I ever wanted to do a project at home, as oppose to stuff that requires a teacher to learn properly. I wouldnt be so worried about it if it wasnt for the fact that I did a bunch of AP and Dual Enrollment classes in High School, because now Ive already finished the first year and a half of both programs, leaving me with a small window to change majors. Thats also the only reason Im considering a double major, because I think I can afford the couple extra years of schooling. Sorry for rambling and thanks in advance for any advice

For casting wax patterns any wax will work but, at the risk of being a buyfag, actual Investment casting Wax is best.

It's hard, has no shrinkage and burns out cleanly with no ash. I can get a 2kg block for under £10 - which is a lot of Wax.

I found it hard to handle paraffin without it melting or breaking, and so you struggle to sprue it adequately.

Plus, you know, you can reclaim and reuse a lot of wax.

ANONS PLS HELP

So I moved in a few months ago to this newly done up house, rather old, split into 3 apts.

I notice a bee or two every now and then, big black bees. Carpenter bees.

HOW THE FUCK DO I GET RID OF THESE FUCKERS.

Now I see like 4-5 buzzing around constantly, right by my fucking door too. Now I see a few traveling into my backyard. I fucking hate bees.

Please help. Do I just fucking kerosene the entire thing and risk lighting my house.
>>
>>980467
Buy insecticide that kills carpenter bees read the label to find out which one. Locate nest(s) look for holes in the wood where bees are coming and going. Once it's dark out and fairly cool saturate the nest with the insecticide. Check to see if there are no more bees for a day or two. Repeat if you still see bees. In the fall block up the holes with spray foam.
>>
>>980487
I should add waiting until dark isn't necessary, but it gives you a better chance at getting them all as they go back to the hive at night and the cooler temperature makes them sluggish so you don't deal with a swarm of pissed off bees
>>
>>980357
no not really. Just curious of the cost savings to build one vs buying one. As I said, keep in mind that by buying a gas grill, nobody will think you're using a charcoal one like they will if you repurpose yours (except for the obvious addition of a propane tank) I tell ya wuht!

>Just curious of the cost savings to build one vs buying one

I dont get why anyone buys gas grills ever.
People throw them away every single year. I see really nice ones sitting on the side of the road all the time once summer is over.

Propane isnt cheaper or easier than charcoal, and it tastes shittier.
>>
>>980546
why would they throw them away after every grilling season?

Propane is pretty easy, I can buy a tank and it'll last me all season (I mostly grill dogs). It is pretty easy, turn gas on and hit a button. The taste part is definitely matter of opinion. We prefer to taste the meat, rather than the heat

However, the wood has some sort of 'laminate' (I'm guessing) layered around it which gives it a pretty smooth touch yet still can see some sort of grain giving it that sexy wooden, black look [will try to remember to take a pic].

I was wondering what sort of a wood do I need to use so a desk would be solid but not fucking overkill and way too heavy. Also, is there anyway to 'laminate' the surface or do whatever I described above, wood doesn't have to be black like in the picture (black desk next to black bed might look weird), I was thinking a natural wood colour or slightly darker wood might look nice. Is it possible to give it that nice laminate sort of thing over the top without having access to an ikea factory? Can you just order it online and layer your cuts of wood with it or something similar?

Also any tips when making a desk? I only want something simple, two solid sides and a top, maybe some like 10cm shelving coming off one side so I can put my phone, keys, wallet, etc, beside my bed whilst I sleep. Was just going to make a seperate little stand to raise my PC off the ground, make a little wooden enclosure to store the power extension thing in (get rid of messy cables).

If this project goes well I'll probably end up designing my own set of shelves for in my room and in my cupboard. Once I can perfect this will be so nice, being able to just make shit yourself as apposed to buying things and hoping they suit your needs.

Also any suggestions for programs to draw up designs in? Preferably having a mode where you can like expand all the seperate parts that go together and see how/where they go together if that makes sense. Is CAD still they way to go these days?
>>

If you don't want it to be a piece of shit then don't laminate or veneer it.
>>
>>981372

>>
>>981373
buy nice wood and stain it
>>
>>981373
Paint or make it out of better wood and stain it. Although lots of cheap woods look good stained they tend to build up dents and dings faster.
>>
>>981374
>>981375
Wouldn't veneering it give a much smoother surface, better for when you're writing on thin sheets of paper. And wouldn't it also mean you're not confined by the look/feel of the wood you choose? I'd feel like I have a desk which looks and feels like my floor does as apposed to a piece of furniture. Plus, I think the stained look would clash too much with my floors anyway and make it look retarded. Also, wouldn't staining/painting it would just give more room for fucking it up completely?
>>
>>981363
You can buy pre veneered plywood from most good timber suppliers, pay for them to cut it to size and edge it, a typical desk top would cost you 60 odd quid for that in the UK
>>
>>981385
Ahh nice, will look into that.

Any suggestions for attaching the two sides to the top of the desk? Preferably I'd like to have screws for easy (de)assembly, making it easier to move it around, etc, etc.

But it seems like it would be hard to do without drilling into the end of the sides (splitting could occur + weak joint), not to mention a big ugly screw head on the table top of the desk.

Will I have to do something like a pocket hole joint?

We used to call that the ME-Suicide degree. Hope you like to math stuff.

I'm EE with coherent optics minor, but I took a lot of ME classes before settling into high voltage & lasers. Single major let me specialize in the areas I found interesting, and I think dual-classing might have kept me busy with core credits instead. In my case that specialization paid off with some fun work, so no regrets.

As to the future, robotics looks promising where I'm standing, and that's mostly mechanical, aerospace, and materials (control systems will standardize). Smells like ME to me.

But I'm not all that bright, so take it as you will.

You have to cut sheets of it to match your desk exactly or it'll look horrible. It's prone to peeling up or chipping which looks horrible. If you want to change the finish on it and try to sand it, you have to be incredibly careful or you'll sand right through it, looks horrible.

Just use decent wood, not MDF or ply. Go to a junk shop, buy an old desk or two, use them to make the desk you want and polish them up.

A friend got a shelf unit with some drawers for free.

From what I saw from a glance, it's particle board with veneer on top.
Black veneer with grey veneer drawers. I assume those are bleached.
All other furniture in the room is solid wood with a clear finish so it looks quite out of place in black.

So we'd like to paint it:
A quick google search tells us to bleach (2 part bleach) the black to make it lighter, then slightly sand (~150 grit), apply primer, let dry, and finally apply thin coats of color.

I'm guessing that we won't be able to get a natural wood color easily, right?
I'm also assuming that without bleaching we won't be able to paint over the black without a large amount of coats and not without losing the wood structure, is that right?
Anyone have some tips for the bleaching process?
Or am I overthinking this and it will be a simple matter of scraping/sanding down the color, some polishing and applying polyurethane?

Anything I'm missing? An easier process?

I don't mind doing too much math, honestly. I don't mean to brag or anything but it sorta comes naturally to me, Im in Differential Equations 2 right now and its not that bad. Ive also taken up to Physics 3 and I did a lot better in the Mechanics units than the E&M stuff. Assuming that Mechanical seems more appealing in terms of a career after college, do you think it would be relatively easy to just look stuff up relating to EE if I want to do some project from home? And do you think it would be the same for vice versa? I just don't want to walk out of college and find out I spent years learning stuff on paper for a field that needed hands on experience I guess, but now Im going off on a tangent.

I'm doing EE, planning to go into telecom. I'm at the second semester and so far I've only got in contact with caculus, physics and a few chemistry labs (Go figure). I was never into electronics (never built anything before) and I started getting into contact with it las semester in a basic electricity lab and now with a lab/class I took from the 3rd semester about transducers. Learning about opamps, as I look in the things I'll see later on the course shit gets tense. EE and ME are very broad. And I was in doubt about which one to go to. But a good teacher of mine said that as you learn EE everything turns into a EE problem and that seems to be holding so far. I never was "good" or liked math but I'm just studying it and using it as a tool to do cool shit. Things are a tad diferent here on banana land but I'm kinda in the same spot as you. I was in doubt between material engineering, EE and ME
>>
>>982728
Yeah I found out a few years ago that what I had forever thought to be ME was really closer to mechatronics, which my school doesnt offer. EE seemed cool to me for a bit when I took a class Junior Year which is really just making cool shit with Arduino and learning basic circuits, but when it comes to applying serious math to circuitry like in E&M, I lose interest. I just want to make cool roboty shit to be honest. I know its a dumb way to explain it, but I want to go into a field where I can learn to make cool robot arms. I liked lasers the little time I worked with them, but not really well enough to study them specifically.

Yeah, I had a few bad teachers who made tension dividers and opamps seem very hard (they didn't explained the key basic concepts they assumed we got from god knows where). I just want antennas, telemetry, radios and information.

So, a door handle has the knob part and the keyhole.

Is it possible to modify it or is there any kind of handle that instead of the knob part it got another keyhole so you need two different keys to open the same door?

I need a door with two closing devices on it due to reasons. The important thing is not safety, but that you cannot steal just one single key and enter inside without some effort. Making another hole in the door would mean that I will have to buy a new door some months from now to substitute the old one that is why I didn't wanted to install another handle.

Make the cut as you are planing to do, fold the edge (just a bit, 2cm or so) inwards or outwards (wether you want it to show or not) and sew it.

Whoever did these cabinets were kind of retarded apparently. For one the bottom of the drawer is too thin for a center mount but it's my only option right now.

My problem is that the drawer is 18 3/4" but the cabinet depth is 23 1/2" so there's about a 5" gap when it is closed and no one sells a center mount to accommodate this that I've found.

Would it be a problem to buy two of the same part in different sizes (one to fit drawer length and one for cabinet depth) or would that fuck up the 3/4 extension?

Can anyone redpill me real quick on tempering steel in blacksmithing?

I just helped a guy blacksmith for the first time this morning, it was fun, but he sounded like he really didn't know what he was talking about when it came to tempering, his descriptions of how it worked were all really vague.
>>
>>983366

It's a relatively simple process made really complex by the realities of the forge.

http://www.brighthubengineering.com/manufacturing-technology/30476-what-is-heat-treatment/

The concept is easy, but getting the necessary critical temperatures from random steel is hard, and consistency at the forge is an endless pursuit of perfection.

The TL:DR is

Normalizing makes steel better for machining

Annealing makes steel soft but durable, useful for cold forming

Hardening makes steel harder (duh) but often makes it brittle.

Tempering removes the brittleness at the cost of hardness, as well as generally removing stress. This is the point where you carefully control the process to get your final material characteristics.

There are other heat processes as well that are a bit beyond the smithy, but all of them are trying to play with crystal size, structure and internal stress.

It's very likely he doesn't know the science behind his process, but is using a pre-calculated process: A lot of hobby smiths think in terms of heat color and quenchant rather than critical temps and crystal structure.

So I searched ebay for "laser engraver" and to my undeserved surprise one can get kits from China for 200-400 bux, depending on the strength of the laser. The ones I looked at have Arduino nano, are made of aluminum extrusion, NEMA mounted steppers and so on. Basically exactly what a laser engraver would be if you were to build your own.

My question : anyone have experience with these? Are they any good?

I guess secondary question is : what can one cut with various laser strengths?
>>
>>983446

No firsthand experience, but according to the last thread we had, it's a risk. The laser's rating is possibly "exaggerated" and you'll need to shake down the whole thing before any serious use.

If you get lucky and/or you're willing to RMA until you have all working parts, it's a rather good deal.

This is the kind of thing that is trivial in Linux : lm_sensors to get PC temps and fiddle with your udev configs so the Arduino always maps to the same device name.

If this is last isn't possible in Windows, then maybe you could modify your Arduino code such that your program query it to confirm it's listening on the correct port. Basically, open COM1, send "who are you", Arduino replies "I'm Bob", then you know you have the correct port. If not, then move on to COM2. Rince and repeat.
