Just bought a house with a pseudo-room at the landing of the stairs to the second level. Thought that'd be a cool place to make my office/computer area. Only problem is >pic related.

Have houses behind mine that can see into my landing. Even if I didn't have the comp here, I'd still want more privacy because a man should be able to walk around naked or entertain women wherever he pleases.

Suggestions??

Also, what height ladder would you recommend for that space? I'm a complete newbie.
>>
>>968789
Curtains, blinds, window tinting, shutters, whatever.

We don't fucking know how high your ceilings are, bust out a measuring tape.

oh man, I totally didn't consider the most obvious answer! now just let me plug them into those power outlets I have up there and I'm set
>>
>>968815
Did you look into it at all before coming here like a crying baby?
>>
16ft extension ladder should do it
>>
>>968815
See that purple link in the picture? Yeah, you should try going to that, then try READING and RESEARCHING a little rather than whining, you might find picture related. If you're still being a little bitch about it, you might try looking up manually operated 2nd story blinds, it just means you're going to have to have a big stick in the corner of your room to reach the controls.
>>
OP just a nugget of wisdom, you can rent ladders from most of your local building supply stores if you won't need it again once you are done installing your blinds. Goodluck buddy.
>>
Just get the sales man round and he'll tell you all about it.
>>
>>968789
put a deck up there and at least use the space that you are paying for

you do do like pic related:
the red things are pulleys
the green line is cord
the purple things are {whatever kind of window covering you want} : one is hung from the upper cord, and the other is hung from the lower cord

when you pull the cord one way, both the covers will move outwards and cover the windows
pull the cord the other way, and both covers will move inward, uncovering the windows
>>
>>968956
That would look like shit. You could just get some normal blinds with a longer cord if you wanted to do it that way.
>>
>>968798

A long string and a long plastic stick for the twisty-blindey-shutter mechanism instead of the stock one.

Are you sure you're /diy/ material?

just paste old newspapers over them.
>>

this, also tin foil, don't be afraid to really nig it up
>>

aloominnyum foil does work really well though. blocks light 100% and it insulates pretty well too

Just get some solar shade louvres install if a remote operated blind is too much effort you nonce.

The non-trashy solution for privacy + natural light is stained glass. Shades or blinds seem kind of ghetto in this situation, too. OP only has a view of his neighbor's siding. Make your own view.

If it were my house, I'd probably make or commission a pair of stained glass windows, frame them in nice picture frames, and hang them on the wall over the windows. Then if I really wanted to, I'd get up on a ladder and take them down as needed.
>>
wax paper or DIY window frosting should be enough to blur the dongs

that's a very neat idea, might be a bit outside my budget though

>>968822
I did do that research before coming here, but look at the options:
DC: no power outlets
battery: regularly changing batteries 25 feet up sounds like a good idea
solar: I need to close the blinds at night mostly and it's unclear to me if they work well at night

solar has potential, but only with a rechargeable battery setup
>>
>>968956
this is also an interesting idea... might think on that some more.. not sure I could make it look good

Haha no

>>969245
>finds the idea of stained glass good

Fucking hell man, you could have said you didn't care about the view, if all you want is the light from these windows and don't want the view through them just add some fucking stuff frost the windows like >>969642 or a spray.
>>
>>969217
this!

there are other ways to get the 'stain glass' look. there is a paint you can put directly on the glass with a black sticky material to simulate the 'leading' between the colors. these are so high up if it is done well no one would know it wasn't even real stain glass.
another option; just go with a frosted or 'crushed ice' semi-translucent covering. basically its a sheet sticker material that when stuck to the glass it looks like frosted glass or 'crushed ice' glass. and it will still let some light through. this is sometimes used on bathroom windows. easy peasy. no messing about with blinds and jimmy rigged up pulleys and shite.
also blinds with get dusty and eventually you will want/need to climb up there and clean them = no fun.
>>
>>969667
or make a frame with glass the same size as your window and make the fake stain glass or frost glass sticker >>969642 on that and then mount those in front of the windows. that way you aren't messing with the original windows and they can be removed easily. also still avoids the trashy/dust magnet blinds option. and be easier to work on rather then trying to apply either option while standing up high on a ladder.
>>
>>969667
>>969671
do a gogle search for "faux stained glass" there are a ton of resources/links for kits to use or doing it completely DIY.
I wanted to try this for a window in my 100+ year old house.
>>
>>969671
also with this idea you could make multiple panels with different images and change them out periodically... just an added bonus!
>>
Maybe you could just take some old landscape photos from mags and paste them on, they'd enjoy the view, and so would you.
>>
Frost the windows. You can still get natural light through them..
>>
>not just knocking out the wall and making a big one way window

wew
>>
>>969675
This is the best option imo

The best way to do it is not some curtains or remote blinds.

The best and cheapest way is just to get some sort of plastic film that gives a blurry effect. That way you still get the benefits of outside light, but people won't see you nekkid.

I know 3M makes "frosted glass" effect films.

the only thing that makes nudity wrong is how other people receive it. OP can't tell if some 70yr old pervadurve is slapping his nuts to OP's tender naked loins. which would be wrong and should be prevented.

This if you don't mind them hanging down.

Other than that I'd got with translucent privacy film. It allows light through, but it completely blocks any viewing ability from either direction.

Egads, that area with the two windows is a total waste of space!

The builders could very well have made it an extra second-story room instead of a cheap dining-room gimmick.

Does incompetent floor planning know no bounds?
