I know this should be an easy project but I have no experience with this kind of stuff, I've only done diy with electronics before. I want to mount pic related to my ceiling. Any suggestions or tips?
I live in a very old house and none of the doorways are the right size so I can't just use it in a doorway.

You're using it wrong. That should fit in almost any fucking door unless they have no top rim. That's not going to mount to the ceiling well at all. Go buy a ceiling mount one and make sure you don't just put it up anywhere. Make sure in anchored in frame work.
I can even imagine a door that's too narrow for that so unless your doors are fucking 12 feet high or 10 feet high and touch the ceiling it should fit.
