What the hell...

So yesterday I decided to change the oil in my air compressor. I've done this three times before, and I remember the last time I've done so the oil came out mostly clean. This time it came out so thick with metal particles I could almost see my reflection in the waste oil. I'm talking particles large enough you could feel them if you were to rub your fingers together. I don't know what caused this. All I can think of is when I sprayed wd40 in the air intake once with the idea of lubricating the inside of the tank to prevent rust. Can't see how that would pulverize the inside of my compressor though.

Any ideas on what caused this?

Is this compressor gas driven or electric?

You just answered yourself. WD-40 is not a lubricant. It's a water displacing (WD - get it?) penetrant. It's effective at doing the opposite of what you wanted to do - thinning and removing lubricants. When you sprayed it into the air intake you probably fucked up the oil film on the cylinder and piston, leading to metal on metal friction.
>>
>>958086
Nonsense.
>>
>>958097
I mean sure, it is a lubricant but it is much less viscous than pump/engine oil and not really approppriate there.
>>
Time to take it all apart babe
>>
>>958064

why didnt you just take off the air tank drain valve and spray the WD40 directly into the tank? you sprayed it into the INTAKE... where the piston is...
you got to be the stupidest motherfucker...
>>
>>958670
there are stupider people. i was impressed he changed the oil at all. I havent touched mine in almost a decade...
>>
You fucked up the lubrication with the wd40. Everybody uses it as a lubricant but it is not a lubricating oil, it is a penetrative oil meant to loosen up things and/or to get rid of water. So while you did get rid of any water you also partially replaced the lubricating oil with wd40 which fucked up your compressor.

Not all oils are equal

>I havent touched mine in almost a decade...

You sure you don't have an oil-less?
>>
>>958727
Topping off and changing oil are two different things
>>
>>958097
no it's actualy not nonsense.
Wd only ever gets on my electrics and very occasionaly onto nuts rusted onto bolts.

never anywhere else, espcially never on anything that relies on oil or grease as a lubicant.

it breaks down grease and thins out oil.

my first motorcycle accident was soley due to me using WD40 to lubricate the throttle which jammed open at full revs.
>>
>>958670
A couple blasts of WD-40 into the intake does not make a piston disintegrate, you tard. There's something else at play here. Possibly some bearings are disintegrating. metal particles in a car's engine oil is usually an indication of bearing wear.
>>
check it again and see if the oil still looks good

then probably don't put anything else near it again

Agreed

OP. Things wear over time regardless of how much and what kind of lubrication you use. I wouldn't be so surprised.
>>
>>958064
Because the WD40 dieseled.. And fucked something up to where it's shitting metal bits.
>>
>>958782
No it didn't.

The most likely explanation is the crud was stuck on and whe WD40 moved it.

WD40 won't cause powdered cast or galvanised parts to break down let alone over night.

What is the absolute loudest sound I can create with an air compressor (other than it blowing up)

I want to get some kind of noisemaker, probably a horn or something with a fitting so I can connect it to the tank and have some fun.

Google Auxetophone. Quote from link below...

AUXETOPHONE TECHNOLOGY TODAY.
Surprisingly, it's important. Very important, in its specialised field. We probably wouldn't have got to the moon without it. Compressed air modulated by valves is used to generate enormous sound levels in test chambers.
The machine in the picture can generate a Sound Pressure Level of 165 dB from an air supply at 120 psi. The air is modulated by a servo-driven reciprocating poppet valve that sounds as though it is the direct descendant of Parson's comb-valve.
To put this in perspective, 130 dB SPL causes instant hearing damage. About the only thing in the world that generates such extreme levels as 165 dB is a rocket engine at close quarters- and that is exactly what these noise generators are used for- testing rockets and jet aircraft to make sure they can withstand the noise of their own engines.

I was going to say get a tuba but your compressor would need an embouchure
There must be some air raid sirens that run on a compressor instead of blowers

What's a good cheap horn I can buy that I can hook up to compressor and create some real noise?

WD40 is no replacement for lubricant. A fool I knew used it for chain lube on a motorcycle, and the chain was red-hot by the time it stopped.
>>
>>958064
>inherited an air compressor
>mfw the oil is about 20 years old

Everyone here is 100% correct on WD-40 not being a lube, but I would be really surprised if the damage was caused just by spraying some in the intake once.

How much did you spray?
>>
>>960576
Actually it doesn't suprise me at all, the oil film can easily be disrupted by a bit of wd40
>>
>>958771

WD 40 DISPLACES WATER AND OTHER LUBRICANTS YOU FUCKING TARD, IT IS NOT MEANT TO REPLACE LUBRICANTS ESPECIALLY WHERE OIL AND PISTONS ARE CONCERNED

You are the stupidest fucking idiot on DIY

You're a mug mate. If I spray WD40 on something coated in oil, when Infact WD40 despite the name is made up of a compound of oils, would it cause the part to disintegrate? Of course not.

Don't be so fucking moronic all the time. I'd expect it to damage if it was run constantly over a period of weeks or months. Not in 5 minutes.

>>960914
Again you're talking shit. Do a little reading about the product before you presume you know what it's made of and how it acts.

Oil naturally displaces water. If there's no oil in WD40 how does it work?
>>
>>958716
nah bro. you can use wd40 to rust protect pistons. we use kerosene to provide rust protection. when you have the head off an engine you can soak the tops of the pistons in kero to remove carbon deposits and should wipe down mating surfaces with kero to form a thin film to prevent rust. engines are run without oil when you first buy them. the oil needs to be pumped up into the engine and runs a few revs without oil. pistons are starved of oil when the engine gets turned on from leaving your car overnight even. this wouldnt kill the engine.

>>958765
that's because wd40 gums up. it attracts dirt. your cable jammed because you washed away the oil and added something that would attract shit particles increasing friction over time and jam the cable.

>>961096
oil doesnt displace water. oil floats on water. I think you mean oil from a compressed can can displace it. and the very thin oil helps take apart rusted parts because it can wick into the threads and joints.
>>
>>961096
Do you even know the definition of oil? There's even a huge difference between OPEC Crude oil and Brent Crude.

Oil is basically a viscous water-free liquid that's soluble in either ether or ethanol.
>>
>>958765
>my first motorcycle accident was soley due to me using WD40 to lubricate the throttle which jammed open at full revs.

Holy fuck, you too?

I was on a 250cc 2-stroke when I was 12 or 13 up on some trails, throttle stuck open and I almost went full speed around a corner into a dump truck.

Just about dumped it but slid around the truck and shocked the shit out of myself pulling the spark plug wire.

That was embarrassing to explain to the forrest ranger dudes.

your first mistake is even owning a can of that fucking garbage. literally hundreds of products that work far better for the same price or even less
