I had a 2000 Excursion that kept getting keyed or broken into. I bought a new car and I want to protect it.

However, I can't move yet and I live in an apt and I think a resident or two is the one keying and breaking into cars.

What can I do to get proof it's the guys I think that's doing it. If I bought a cheap IR security camera to point at my car....is that illegal? To film the whole parking lot? I live in Midwest USA.

I was just going to point it towards where I park zoomed in.

Any other suggestions? The police don't do anything without proof. Even though I caught one guy trying to open my car door while I was smoking outside late at night. I threatened him and told him next time I see him near my car I'm coming out with my kimber. He ran but I knew who it was I think based on his weight and his personalized hoody

Also I'm not fucking anyone's gf or wife, I don't even talk to my neighbors. They target all cars

My question is what can I do to prevent my car from being keyed or broken into. Preferably a cheap method because I'm not going to be living here much longer

Also this is where I work. Not my apt. There are cameras here and no one has ever bothered my car at work

If I was going to buy a IR camera, what do you suggest without buying a HD for it? Something I can link to my desk top?

My main concern is if it's illegal to have a camera on property I don't own. I rent the property and the camera I would mount on my patio or building facing the entire parking lot and one focusing on my car
>>
>Is it illegal to film the whole parking lot?
Probably not, assuming there isn't a gate or 'authorized personnel only' sign. Exactly which state you live it might make a big difference.

An alternative might be to wire up a few dash cams with big SD cards in different directions from inside the car.
>>
>>939988
No gate, no authorized personal only sign but it does say "private property-- No trespassing"

The problem with the dash cam idea is I'm about to get the windows tinted and unless one of the dudes stand directly in front of the car It's useless. I'm getting the tint because I read it's harder to break tinted windows

Pay for better insurance until you move out. Get it fixed
>>
>>939993
>Private property
Yeah... You have a hunch on whos doing it? If they're other tenants then they may have an expectation of not being filmed there, very dependent on local laws. Is the parking lot a public enough place that, for example, UPS guys walk through it?

Yeah but I don't know where they live in their building. Its several buildings of 16 appts. Not a project lol. Its actually in the wealthiest county in the state. But at the same time where I work has several security cameras inside and outside facing 2 parking lots, and it's in the same county. So....maybe it is ok to film
>>
>>939995
Well for newer cars you need full coverage. But it's the principle, this has to be reported to insurance to get it fixed and that will show on a carfax if I ever sold it.
>>
>>939999
Your work can film because its their property, you may not be able film because you're only a tenant. How open to foot traffic is the parking lot? Or maybe you can cover your ass by getting written permission from your landlord. Consider than one hour with a real lawyer is cheaper than a new paint job.
>>

My work is a rented strip mall. Our company doesn't own it.

It's open to foot traffic in a sense it's not gated and anyone can walk through. UPS, anyone. I'll talk to my landlord for permission first. Then if that doesn't own out I'll talk to a lawyer until I can move. But my lease isnt up for 9 months and this is weekly crime spree this guys commit. But not sure if they will do it again for awhile because of my threats and catching them....who knows. Maybe they think I was bluffing.
>>
>>940006
>strip mall
its a public space, no expectation for not being filmed

>anyone can walk though
eh... get the cameras, don't tell your landlord, talk to a lawyer when you get the chance because you may need to get civil damages the next time it happenes
>>
>>940012
I'll get the cameras. Any suggestions? I know nothing about security cameras. I need something I can recognise a face and be IR. The smaller the better and anything I can use my desktop to view/download?

I've only ever bought audio gear from them, but they claim to have 'free lifetime tech support' on everything they sell. Monoprice is another option.

Ill check them out. Thanks. I know our surveillance system at work uses a DVR/HD. Put that one is top of the line.... I was just wondering if I can use my computer HD and monitor
>>
>>940027
Both places have WIFI camera type things, but my guess is you may need to invest a bit to get something that can record all night at a high enough resolution to see faces. But memory cards are cheap enough.
>>
Just camp in the car at night and beat the fucker that messes with your shit with a piece of rebar.
>>
>>939973
Wait, your old car was being keyed and broken into and your next move is to buy a new one? Why the fuck did you think that was a good idea?

Anyways, just rent a garage, or an indoor parking space.

I think he's an immigrant based of of his poor writing and desire to drive a German luxury car while living a ghetto apartment complex. Likely Somali.

Nice car op I would key the fuck out of that because I can't afford one.
>>
>>939973
the simple solution is to park somewhere else. Park a block or two away in safer and more secure lot.

put your cameras up, but realize they wont prevent vandalism, and without a great hd camera you wont get a good enough image to id the criminal. your zoomed out cam will show a dark figure crossing a parking lot and vandalizing a car, and the zoomed camera will show something similar to pic related
