How glossy is the cardboard? Depending on that, the cleaner you use might soak into and darken the cardboard, making it look even worse.
Worst case, a very light brushing of water. Then lightly scrape with your fingernail, and/or rub with your thumb in a circular pattern.

There's a specific solvent mix that removes labels well; you should go buy a can of label remover.
You're just wasting time if you use anything else.
Update: I quite literally just licked the package and scraped at it with my nails
naphtha/zippo lighter fluid is my go-to sticky remover.
