When I was a kid I got interested in it, and it was one of the few interests of mine that my father encouraged, but as soon as my brain-damaged paranoid mother discovered I'd be communicating with complete strangers over the radio, she freaked out and thought I'd tell them where we lived, and someone would come and murder us all. Not making this shit up. No CB radio either, for the same reasons. Just as well there was no internet back then, either, or I would have been in the only house in my town without it, too, same reason.

If you have an Android, get the app "Ham Test Prep". It's free and has the entire question pool for every level.
There are also a few other good ham and SWLing apps for Android out there if you bother to look around.

>Have a radio
>cool for emergencies and all
>constant stream of paranoia from all sources
I can understand why they locked the whole hamradio fun behind walls of laws due to risk of jamming/interfering, but if you would use it on the PMR channels that store-bought walkie-talkies are fine with, then there shouldn't be any issue really.
Until then it makes a good FM radio I suppose.
