Hi /diy/! I'm building a RC/autonomous tank and I'm looking for a good platform to work on.
I found the (pretty popular) Tamiya platform https://www.pololu.com/product/106 but it's a bit small for my purpose. Can you recommend me a bigger platform (15-20cm wide) that is not prohibitively expensive? I do have access to a 3D printer, but I would prefer an off-the-shelf solution.

vex has a tank tread kit but it may be a little pricey

Just to be sure, you are referring to http://www.vexrobotics.com/276-2168.html
Yes, they are on the pricey side, but I think this will work. My only problem is that the tread is not rubberized, and we need good grip on smooth surfaces.
Does anybody have experience with 3D printed tracks?

they do, may be a different kit or something

Yeah but the upgrade kit http://www.vexrobotics.com/vexedr/products/accessories/motion/276-2214.html
costs almost as much as the kit, and it also includes the conveyor belt thing that I have no use of. I guess I'll just cut and glue 170 little strips of rubber.

good, you do know what board you're on, right?

/diy/, and I wasn't being ironic. I would prefer gluing 170 strips of rubber with my teammates than shelling out 25$ on 25 pieces of plastic with a bit of rubber on top.
Also this is the reason I was asking about 3D printed/homemade alternatives.

just get cut pieces of surgical tubing and slip them over

That should be easier. Thanks!
For low loads lego works pretty well

I would just suggest some plasti-dip or spray on bed-liner
