COMPLETELY new to the diy scene, but I'm very interested of picking up this as a hobby. How do I start?

Go shingle a roof.

I live in an apartment in Austin, I don't think I can do that

Find something broken.

Fix it.

Learn from the experience.

DIY isn't really a hobby itself, there are things you can do stuff like wood working etc, but as the other anon said, find broken shit and fix it.
It will build your experience and you won't end with some useless tchotchke.

By doing it yourself.

Not that I know of, but it deserves it.

This is exactly what it isnt. The very idea of do it yourself means theres no clubs or experts required. Have you tried digging a hole in your back yard?

So, where do I join up? Should I start as a hobby or go for it from day 1?

Heres what i made. I was candy flipping hard and kept thinking about Dune. I was wearing full body skins and so i bought a camelbak and suddenly i was wearing a stillsuit. Then i bought a meter of scotchlite because crossing roads and traffic lights was hard.

Building furniture
Repairing furniture
Staining furniture
Building furniture out of salvaged items like wooden pallets and scrap metal
Restoring a junk car
Painting your house
Starting a garden or landscaping your yard
Welding shit together
Digging holes or something

Ran out of ideas. I'm just a furniture guy.
