Go simple. I took a broken board, cut it into 3 pieces, used 4 screws and a nut that fit a tripod plate. Rock solid, and i can set it next to the bed.

Here's some shit pics of the one I made recently. I originally started making it because the micro usb port was failing but there's two exposed terminals on the side of it you can use to charge it but they wanted $100 for a piece of plastic with two wires connected to a usb port.
It had a much smaller footprint until I started using it like I normally would and decided it's better than holding it so the larger footprint is to keep it stable while sitting on a pillow on my stomach.
The part that holds the tablet in place on the far left lines up with the two terminals, I'm going to have two pogo pins connect it when they come in the mail.
Made specifically for the original sony xperia z tablet but I can upload the LDD file if anyone's interested.

I made this a while back dicking around late at night in my shop when I couldn't sleep. I realized that the prongs fell forward with even a bit of weight from the phone, so I drilled some holes and dental floss'ed a 2x4 to it.
Not my finest work, I don't really use it.

Here's a gif from LDD, the middle ones sit flush with the back when it's in landscape mode, then you take it out, flip them out and you can put it back in portrait mode
