I've been getting into crochet recently as a way to pass the slow hours of the night shift. This is my latest work in progress: a circular rag rug crocheted from a ball of bedsheet strips. It's a lot easier than I thought it would be. I think I'll try making a rag basket next.

Do any of you other /diy/kes crochet, knit, sew, or practice other fabric crafts? Show off your creations in this thread, ask other anons how they made their stuff, etc. Anything goes.

That's cool. Don't listen to the negative people on this board. They're just jealous.

i crochet a bit but my favorite sewing type skill is tatting. Long ass needle creating really intricate stuff :)

Learned to crochet when I was like...13? (Why, yes, I WAS the weird kid in school.) Admittedly haven't done any of it in a quite a long time. Don't think I have the small, stuffed crab toy with googly eyes anymore...

I don't have a pic onhand but I just finished my second ever crochet project (my first was a granny square) which was an earflap-hat and I think it came out really cool. Ive been looking into making an afghan next, but a lot of them look kinda boring or require changing up the colors every few stitches, which is annoying because I'd prefer to just stick to a few seives of the same yarn. does anyone have a link or picture of an afghan pattern that looks fun when it's done but only uses one yarn color? Anything would be appreciated.
>>
>>896361
>HAZMAT duck
That is adorable.

>>896603
I don't have any patterns, but search around on the Internet; there's plenty of free patterns for the taking. One idea comes to mind though: you could try making a whole bunch of granny squares (one color for each square) and then stitch them together like a quilt.
>>
>>896637
Oh that could be cool. My friend makes some basic pixel art, i could ask him to make me a cool 8x8 or even 16x16 image to make a quilt of. Thanks anon.

Try a cable or ripple. They look good in one color, cables especially.

Yeah, me.
I picked knitting up about three weeks ago. I developed an interest in classic men's fashion and some vintage knit vests caught my eye, so on a whim I decided to learn how to knit.
And it's quite fun and very relaxing.

Good job OP. I've been crocheting for a few years and just picked up knitting. If you want to learn more about crochet, try The Crochet Answer Book. I cant recommend that shit enough, it's a small book that covers a million little techniques and does a good job of explaining and illustrating things.

I just finished pic related. I don't have a pic of mine on hand but it looks exactly like this one. (pattern link: http://pumpkinorange.co.nz/?p=203)

Was at a museum a while ago, they had a section with a bunch of crafts like knitting, cross-stitching, crochet and other out of fashion crafts from a past long gone.
It was really interesting to see what people did in their spare time back in the day, there were some really interesting things.
Kinda got me interested to get into something like that myself, maybe knitting or something but I'm a man and knitting among other crafts still feels like something you shouldn't do as a man.
>>
>>898261
Hey man, what you do with your time should be no one else's concern. And if you're concerned with what other people think about you, then, well... let me put it this way. You only get one life, and that one too little to spend worrying about what people think of you.

I know plenty of men who know how to knit, crochet, stitch, sew etc. I've taught quite a few in fact.

Men are supposed to be self sufficient right? Whats more self sufficient than being able to make your own fucking winter hat or scarf? Or, better yet... a nice beautiful handmade scarf and hat combo that your girlfriend will wear everywhere and constantly be reminded of you when
>oh my god, becky, I LOVE that scarf! Where'd you get it?
>my boyfriend made it for me!
>OH MY GOD THATS SO SWEET!!!
>I know
>I'm so totally jealous, you have like the BEST boyfriend ever!
>he is, what did your boyfriend get you for christmas?
>A toaster over. How quickly after christmas can i break up with him?
>>
Making something with you own two hands that fits your wants and needs isn't unmanly. Go ahead and make yourself a hat that fits your head in a color you like. Make your mom something for her birthday. Make your dog a better sweater than what the pet store sells.

Making something soft and comforting that doesn't fall apart or look like shit is actually really fucking goddamn difficult. It takes practice, patience, and tenacity to keep going. It's like any other skill.

I was wondering, are knitted wool socks any decent to wear?
Been thinking a bit about this, since the socks I usually have wear out real fast and are impossible to fix, if I can waste some time on knitted socks and enjoy them at the same time, it would be real nice.

>>898334
Matter of taste of course, but my grandma massproduced knitted socks and gloves. They weren't particularly warm, durable or comfortable.

If you're just starting out I highly suggest wood knitting needles. The metal ones have little to no friction and can make it difficult to keep track of the yarn for beginners.

They can be a bit more expensive for a set. But if you buy just a pair sized for gauge for the yarn you have its not bad.

Of course you can always make your own, we are /diy/ afterall
>>
>>898346
Grandmothers generally dont use the best materials. I have some worsted weight wool socks i knitted in a tight gauge and they're the warmest hunting socks I own.
>>

I have some thin oak sheets lying around so I could carve my own.
But my mom had a box full of needles in all different sizes so I didn't even bother to buy them anyway.

Also, my stitches look really uneven and inconsistent but I guess that's something that goes away with practice.

Also really like the feel of the texture, it's very comfortable.

Just reading some guides and watching some videos on knitting.
Didn't know there was so much variation in patterns and technique, I'm honestly a bit overwhelmed but at the same time it's giving me all sorts of ideas of what I could do.

Also, I was at a craft store earlier this week, it was really quite uncomfortable being the only young man among all these older women.

You dont go to the craft store for other projects? Its one of the best places to buy stuff to repurpose.
>>
>>900606
Ah well this store I went to only focuses on crafts with fabric, cloth and yarn stuff.
So it wasn't I've never been there before except a few times with my mom when I was still a little boy.

I try.
I know it doesn't matter but I just can't help it.

Question: does everyone know where their local yarn shop is? Mine is Hooked in Haddonfield, NJ.

My local yarn shop isn't very good; it's 98% the same stock as Walmart at double the price for being the only craft store in miles.

Holy shit, I didn't think this thread would still be up. I just finished weaving the loose ends into the rag-strip rug I had started two weeks ago. Here's the pic of the finished product; Sharpie included for scale. My wife got the white and pink sheets from her grandmother once it became clear that the two green sheets' worth of rags weren't going to make a big enough rug. The rug's going back to said grandma for Christmas.

The rest of you folks have some good-looking stuff going. I'm 'mirin.

Crossboarding from /cgl/
I love crocheting! Amigurumi is my jam.
>>
>>902002
Thanks.
The nice thing about crocheting an amigurumi Cthulhu is that even if I fuck up a few stitches here and there, that's alright. Cthulhu is SUPPOSED to be hideously misshapen; there's no reason why the cute version can't be a little lopsided too. Nobody will be the wiser.

I'd like to, but I'm a poorfag in a small town with a Walmart and like one quilting-supply store with overpriced yarn. That said, I'll probably shell out a few more dollars for better yarn when I make stuff that people will wear. Cheap acrylic seems adequate enough for toys though.

Maybe its the years of 4chan talking but those look like swastikas to me.
>>
>>902164
lots of quilt blocks have appearances very similar to swastikas. If you use a really dark fabric as the outside logs in certain configurations it appears to make a swastika as well
>>
>>902169
to be honest a lot of quit patterns do this due to the fact that the most simplified way to make a curve like shape with only right angles is to make an L like shape and any time you arrange L like shapes in a pinwheel or circular arrangement you will end up with a vaguely swastika like shape.
>>
>>902164
http://fieldguidetoquilts.com/9Recbar/9BStack/9StacksnSwastika.html

An interesting peace on how a lot of quilt blocks can end up with "accidental swastikas"

Would anyone be interested in a beginners' crochet guide in Google Docs? Most writeups have always struck me as too artsy/fluffy/pretentious. I've been doing this for almost eight years now and I think I could run a realist's 101.

>>902277
>>902279
I like your color choices a lot. Have you tried anything other than dishcloth cotton?
>>
>>902721
Thank you! And nah, I just use cotton string. Should I maybe try another kind of material, maybe that's more durable? I do like the idea of selling them as wish bracelets, where you wear it until it breaks and falls off through wear and tear and then your wish comes true. But maybe something more durable would be better, lmao
>>
>>902728
That kind of cotton is very durable, so don't worry about finding something tougher. Wish bracelets - the kind on beach boardwalks, that's what you mean, right? - are made of hemp twine. Cotton ones would last forever! You might want to look into mercerized cotton, the type for doilies. Very fine, lots of colors, still very strong.
>>
>>902721
Absolutely, I'm buying my stuff tonight so it would really be helpful.

I'm a knitter! Started when I was like 10. I was an immigrant kid new to school with no friends and had to join an extra curricular class.

I knew about knitting in movies and cartoons so when I heard they had that in school, I went there. I only knit garter for a long time till I decided to really commit to it as a hobby and started learning off videos and websites and shit (early this year).

Pic is a scarf for my sis. it was for last winter, but the cabling got really tedious. I could just bind off and call it a day, but I really want to make her something really long and warm so I probably will do a few more repeats.

Gonna hit up the LYS tomorrow though and check out some yarn for a cardigan I'm planning to make for myself.
I have never knitted a cardigan before so I'm pretty hyped

I don't really like arm knitting or knitting with really thick yarn to be honest.
