Sup /diy/

Finally got around to working on my surplus gun box a bit. Removed all the inserts and sanded down with 80 grit to remove some of the roughness. Needs some chiseling on the bottom to smooth it out a bit, then a lot more sanding.

Should I leave those muzzle rests in on the back or take them out? I'm thinking about leaving them in as an homage to what the box used to store.

Also, dark stain or just teak oil?

For those who haven't seen the past threads, basically I buy surplus army crates and turn them into minibars.

This is with the muzzle rests removed

personally? leave the inserts in. Work them into the design where and if applicable but leave the history intact. And not dark stain.

I'm with you on the inserts.

Not sure about the stain though. I went with a fairly light stain on my last one and felt like I could've gone plenty darker.

Thats sexy. Also good choice of booze.

My vote goes to a little bit darker of a stain on the inside of the box, then a darker stain for the inserts to make them contrast.

Got any more pics of past mini bars?

It was a wedding gift for a buddy in the army. Had to go with some good stuff.

I like your idea for contrast with the muzzle rests. I'll look into that a bit.

This is actually my second one, but I'm thinking about making these and selling them to make some cash.

That reminds me, I still haven't gotten my friends a wedding present. Where do you get these ammo boxes from?

Is having power an option?

How about putting an LED strip above and below the inserts?

But put a simple cover over it so instead of seeing a bunch of little glowing lights it gives off a glow. Maybe red or blue?

For a crate that large you should totally make a small area that holds a deck or 2 of cards and a set of dice.

I've thought about power, but that may be later down the road. Want to get the basic design down pat before I start diddling with lights.

I like your idea for the card holder. My dad doesn't play a whole lot of cards, but definitely helps fill the space. Still deciding if I want to do wine glass holders from the top. There is a lot of space to fill on this one.

My supplier for the small ammo crate ran out of that size. Go-Armynavy is where I got the 1911 storage crate from. Be warned, shipping cost me a ton for this crate, almost $70.
>>
>>1014060
Thanks for the info. I guess I'll try looking around locally first.
>>
>>1014025
Did that used to hold 1911s or something? Neat
>>
>>1014122
Yup. About 50 of them or so. The smaller minibar I made used to hold 2 60mm mortar shells.

That thing is huge.

The inserts look like they set down in a groove.
Would it be possible to put blocks at the bottom and or just glue the insert in at an offset, then make the barrel holes on the insert wide enough to hold a shot glass?

Keeping bottles on one side then shot glasses on the other. with rocks glasses below or space permiting on top of the insert (extend the top bit to make a shelf for them?).

For something like this wine seems a little out of place. This looks like its going in a manly man cave not some la-te-da book club room.

Unless its mead... but you dont drink mead from a wine glass.

>>1014032

Just noticed the shot glasses. Are they re-finished shell casings or do they just make shot glasses like that?
>>
>>1014221
Not op, but visiting from /k/.

They're the cases from 40mm m203 shells. They work well if you clean them out thoroughly, and put a food safe sort of varnish or epoxy in the bottom to seal the primer pocket.
>>
>>1014224
Nice try, but actually they're 30mm shells that have been cut down.

Looks like they are 30mm shells cut down from a GAU-8.
