solidwerks just werks. it's super easy to do simple stuff.

actually I'm not qualified to answer but solidwerks has never let me down for anything.

except for scripting. I have not yet figured out how to script geometry transformations in SW yet. I actually have to import my shit into sketchup of all things to execute my preprocessing scripts.

Solidworks. The available modules for specific analysis is by far the best.

We have both in my dept, and solidworks is miles better than inventor. It's far more intuitive and user-friendly, as well as more powerful. (Heck, I wouldn't have inventor in my department at all, but it came free with our autodesk package)

Install Windows in a virtual machine along with AV tools etc. It will be isolated from the host OS.

You can keep as many different versions of Windows in VMs as you like, and instantly revert to a clean snapshot which is great for testing software. Virtualbox works well for me and it's free.
