Anyone make their own shift knob?

The one in my car has broken apart, probably due to old age.
Its made of a semi-hard rubbery plastic. I've gorilla glued it together and its held up for now. But I know its going to break soon. I can feel it flexing and trying to sheer itself apart when I shift into reverse

I'm working on making a replacement one out of wood to match the rest of the trim. Working on possibly improving the design to make it more ergonomic as well.
>>
Yeah I've made one. Take your time, and start by drilling out the hole and threading it onto the shaft to make sure the wood doesn't split.

I'm going to match a nut to the thread on the shaft, then embed that nut into the knob and epoxy it.

I'm changing the shape of it from the factory one aswell to suit my style of driving. It will be thicker so

The left side of the knob is going to have some belly so it will fit in my palm, while the right side will be concave to fit my bottom fingers. (The car is RHD).

My goal is to be able to shift using my wrist and fingers, without lifting my forearm off the armrest.
(pushing forward with my thumb and wrist, and pulling back with the index and middle finger and wist.)

The hole for the shaft will be angled 15-30 so the shifter will end up leaning forward. The reason for this is so that in 2nd and 4th gear the shifter will be pointing straight up instead of being uncomfortably angled backwards.
This will allow my wrist a more relaxed position.

Progress so far. I have no idea what the wood is.
All I know is its reddish orange in color, pretty hard, smells bad when sanded or sawn, and doesn't carve easy.

I'm going to polish with fine sandpaper, then stain, and finish by rubbing with linseed oil because I don't like the feeling of "sticky" varnish.

Make a resin copy by using the original for the mold. Make more than one and paint them different colors.

There you go, not only a good replacement but also a good business venture.

That best make a quack sound on every shift. And a really long one when you shift down and engine brake.
>>
Just go get one from a pick & pull.

It doesn't have to be the same model, etc, it just has to have the same shift pattern.

Took the chintzy 'silver skull' shift knob out of my truck when I bought it, and got one for $2 in a parts yard.

>smells bad to sand it

Good lord put on a dust mask before you die from pneumonia. Actually almost happened to me from some Walnut.

I never knew mortuaries sold bones. Do they have outlets or is it just a once in a whole surplus auction or something like that?

Just turned one last week for my 2000 frontier. Just make sure you know the thread size on your shifter. They vary on manufacturers.
