Hey Lads, I'm about to order some fabric for a backpack kind of thing that I'm gonna make and I'm stuck between normal cotton canvas and some shit called Cordura. I was going to use canvas as I know what its going to look and feel, but from what I've, the synthetic stuff is better in just about every way.
Anyone had experience with cordura?

Voting for 1000D cordura nylon. Extremely durable lasts through years of abuse, and very water resistant, as in carry it through a torrential downpour and your stuff stays dry.

No reason to use anything else unless you need it to be ultralight.

Quite stiff though so it might be more difficult to sew.

Cordura all the way.

All of my gear is made from fabric i acquired through 'owf inc' been very happy with their prices and service

How does it do in the sun tho? The only thing that worries me is that it will go brittle after some weeks in the desert.

I have a suitcase made out of the stuff. Totally blade resistant. The anon above wasn't joking about it being tough to sew, even a leather needle would require the holes being punched or burned perhaps. Good chance if you prepunch the holes it'll close back over before you can sew the panel.

On the upside, your bag will be tough, though inflexible.

It's supposed to be very good for UV resistance.

Seconding cordura. Doesn't have to be 1000D though. Something lower will do just fine.

They use Cordura all the time for high end motorcycle gear where toughness is key. Pretty sure that means it's fairly sun-resistant.

yeah 1000D is excessive, 500D or 350D is better suited for most applications.

Also curious to know what OP is constructing

I use a form of 1000D cordura nylon and 2x1050 denier for sewing custom motorcycle jackets for skinny bros. (skinny bro myself is how I got in it) its nicer using heavy fabrics because of the wind keeps the fabric from slapping around in 80mph winds.
