Hey /diy/

I've been wondering how to do my own homemade tank in the cheapest way possible. It doesn't have to be diesel powered. It can be electrical, or whatever.

I'm going for as cheap as possible, but still looks good and won't break down on me for a good few years.

Diesel powered will be best. Id suggest something reliable like a toyota 1DZ engine or a cummins 4bt.

The hardest part will be developing an armored track system and the actual plating
>>
Wouldn't hybrid work the best?
Electric engines powered by a diesel generator.
Certainly would save effort on figuring out a steering mechanism.

Also, it's kinda hard to do a project like this without paying out the ass.
What's your budget anyway?
>>

I have a good amount of money. I'm just a cheap fuck.
>>
>Buy a zero-turn lawnmower
>Weld steel plates to it
>Put a potato cannon on top
>Scream incoherently in Russian as you drive around and launch free T-shirts at random strangers
>>
>>1006468
....You know...
As stupid as that sounds...

That's actually pretty fucking genius...

Yeah, just pick yourself up one of these and mod it.

Those bobcats seem to be top heavy and prone to tipping over.

Full blown Cat killdozer is a proven design, just need some good air supply / filtration.

Op asked for cheap not safe

Working on a fully electric one. Got my motors, working on suspension and frame right now.

What does a 60/70s era cost these days?

Can't be much more than scrap metal value
>>
>>1006734
*bulldozer
>>
>>1006734
You'd likely be mistaken.
I'd wager they're still 100k+ machines in working order.
>>
>>1006742
never mind, some seem to be available at around $50k.
Still a pretty hefty investment.

Hydraulic engines for two sides of tracks - like on the pic you posted.

60's/70's work vehicles, such as tractors and front loaders, are in HUGE demand thanks to newer models having computers in them.

Computer in a vehicle = Digital Millennium Copyright Act protection. Basically, you are not allowed to repair or modify your vehicle due to DMCA laws. But the old vehicles that are 100% mechanical are fair game so farmers and landscapers are opting for the old models lest they have to pay someone else to fix the new ones.

That's what the steel plates are for dummy
>>
What if OP does like.. A human-powered tank? Like a whole bunch of cogs and shit powered by him pedaling his feet?

Or a flinstones style tank
>>
>>1006468
>>1006529
until the cops show up and shoot you for having a cell phone out..
>>
>>1006764
Well if we are going that route we can just get a hefty zero-turn and slap some tracks on it. Half of the hard shit is already done, would only need to create a track unit to use.
>>
>>1006909
What is that a picture of?

RIS is your friend.
>>
Simplest and best way to into full suspension? I think the stuff on the Ripsaw looks OK.
>>
>>1006764
Electric motors would still be easier.

Just rig up a wheelchair driving system to the motors.
>>
>>1006978
You'd be going a fraction of a mile per hour if you wanted to be able to pedal a tank.
>>
>>1006443
If I'm not mistaken some but job did this about 9 years ago with a front end loader welded with steel plate then bulldozed local buildings and shot himself when he drove into someone's basement. I think he was pissed about his lawn or building deck or some shit the city wouldn't let him do.

Look at the diy Mexican cartel tanks.

>>1010089
yes, that's the killdozer mentioned in the thread

In a bridge to far they modelled Shermans around landrovers

>>
>>1006778

Well, its actually because the old ones are work horses that don't break every 5 minutes, but whatever.
>>
>find local auction
>buy old CAT tracked bucketloader for pennies on the dollar
>rip off everything above the turntable
>build wood box on drivetrain frame
>add 3 cylinder diesel to drive hydraulics pump
>for extra points, use the powered turntable for the turret mechanism

This has been done before.

tl;dr - JD tractor has a faulty sensor and shuts the tractor down, repairman can't bypass the proprietary defenses to get the tractor working again thanks to JD and the DMCA. Farmer must wait at least 2 days and pay a small fortune for a JD repair specialist.
>>
>>1006778

well that's just not true.
>>
>>1010604
Yes it is. There is a very special exemption to the DMCA for consumer vehicles that some companies are trying to have removed so that this becomes a reality. There's no such protection on farm equipment.
