sup diy,

Planning on renting this basement for approx 300 usd a month in downtown The Hague/Holland. I will live here for about four years by myself. So, it's obviously a cool space to live for a 21yo guy getting his degrees.

Anyway, I have some cool ideas for this extremely large space.. and hopefully you have some too.

So far:
> paint one of the brick walls dark black and hang loads of old metal advertising signs on it
> a couple of serious speakers and an amplifier for some good parties
> an old fashion bar in the corner, for the above parties
> in the space next to the stairs i want to put my bed, might do some drywalling to turn that into an actual room
> making a ramp down the stairs and creating a corner to work on my motorbike
> a freestaning computer island in the middle of the basement for my IT business

Come on, be creative. I'll be moving in in Juli and if I like your ideas you'll see them come through right here. :)

>renting
>painting the walls
>building new walls

You made sure you're allowed to do this shit?

Does the landlord live in the house while renting out the basement? I'm sure he'll love those parties your throwing too.
>>
>>1001712
Yeah, I can paint stuff and build a wall if I want to. Legally you can do pretty much everything cosmetic as long as you tear it out when you leave.

No, the landlord lives in a nice villa in a rural area. I don't know how he got to own this property. Ayway, it's not like the parties will be daily or with more than 20 people.

Please stick to sharing cool ideas.

Have fun:getting you shit stolen, getting your shit fucked up, getting all your booze drank, cleaning puke, dealing with cops, dealing with shitty neighbors, dealing with assholes you didnt invite, having unimaginable damages, having to pay for said damages, no one respecting your home, your landlord hates you/ evicts you, fines from govt and tickets from cops, trash everywhere
>>
>>1001721
Like I said before, parties would be small and with friends. I also said this:

Please stick to sharing cool ideas.
>>
>>1001711

what about the space needed for kitchen and bedroom?
Are you sure it is enough for actually living in there and even have the area for the parties?

If the aboke is OK, then think of using some space for /fit/
>>
>>1001731
Don't really need a kitchen, my family lives all around this area and I'll only eat at home like 2 days a week. And if I do, I'll stick to something easy like noodles or soup because I hate cooking. Again, I am young and my girlfriend will stay at her own place anyway.

It's absolutely enough for what I need.

And yeah, definetly plan on throwing down some rubber maths and a bench and some dumbells. Noted, thanks.
>>
>>1001711
Buy place. Reinforce everything. Put a blast door, at least 10t. Then do whatever you want.

>>
Here's my idea: you're retarded.

You're going to build walls in someone else's property? Then tear it all down? Just live with your fucking parents. Being a neet with a hipster kitchenless apartment is almost lower then just living with your parents.
>>
What the fuck is wrong with this board? Seriously, I just asked for some cool ideas for my fucking bachelor pad.

Sorry OP I have nothing to contribute, but I support your creativeness.

I'd definitely want to make sure it was secure enough
>>
>>1001711
Sounds bad ass to me. Obviously need to set up a kitchen and all, but I really like the idea of a single large space with "rooms/activites" separated merely by their different purposes rather than walls or boundaries...
>>
>>1001756
Don't post much, but showing support for OP. I wish i could rent a large basemenmt like that for $300. About to start paying car insurance, at $500 a month, and this is a caar i own...
Anyway op, since its brick wall and concrrete floor. it would be dfuckin sweet if you had a basement league, or at least a couple games of futsal down there especially considering your basement is lit very well.
>>
>>1001758
Cheers

>>1001761
Definetly going all out with locks since it looks like a basement box which normally stores a scooter or motor. I don't want some guy to walk in on my and my girlfriend at night.

Definetly installing a triple lock.

>>1001762

>>
I'll just toss some ideas around

-Small bowling alley
-Rollerblade disco
-Movie theatre

I mean, there is a shitload of space, if your only needs are a bed, computer and a waterboiler.
>>
>>1001711
Looks like a really cool space. Draw up the floor plans (accurately, obviously), that'll probably help us better understand what we have to work with here.
>>
pretty cool, be fucking great workspace -
what you can actually do depends about 105% on what the neighbors are like (deaf/blind/friendly is all good) tho - bear in mind, not everyone finds living next to a glorifed fucking frathouse 24/7 amusing either tho. Youd be fucked for anything mass-public commercial use (bar, etc) in there anyway, those stairs the only entrance/exit.

If thats an H (steel) Beam also running the length of the ceiling? You get special clamps for those, hold a ton of shit (speakers, flying beds, whatever tf) - DO NOT drill fucking holes in that beam tho. Not even once.
>>
>>1001841
I like the bowling alley idea, it's cheap and cool to have around when friends come around. Won't make a movie theatre, but definetly a projector and some big loungy couches.

I might actually build a small shower too, on the ground floor next the entrance. Not sure yet.

>>1001875
I'll try, give me a second.

>>1001897
Don't plan on making it a frathouse mate. Won't drill holes in structural elements of the buildings, lol. Thanks for telling me about the clamps tho, could come in handy.

Badass place OP. I could absolutely see living there. Think fabrics, tye-die, used sheets from a hotel bought cheep. Make a few modular walls that stand out with a vibe and leave the industrial white wash alone. Quick, cheep, conversation starter that shows your creative side. Largest bed you can find. Buy a projector and watch you shows on an 8' screen. Lots of bean bags. Everything is easy to move for parties. Pintrest till you find a look that inspires you and make it your own. Jealous as fuck.
>>
>>1001756
Sorry, I can't help but think logically. A house without a kitchen is for working out of. Youre trying to live in a RENTED workshop. Sounds cool, makes no sense. Go for it though, I'm sure the landlord is thinking 'wow, I actually found someone dumb enough to rent my basement.'

If you still want ideas, turn it into a workshop and build stuff, because this is /diy/, not /we design your shitty basement/.

Also, with the toilet upstairs, does it have a basin in there or just the toilet? Do you have any other taps to access water?

My concern is how are you going to get clean water down their and waste water back out?

From the images I see the rest room is on the ground floor so it looks like you're going to have to pump the waste water back up and out.

For cool shit for your pad, one of the walls in top right photo looks very smooth, set up a projector for your tv.

Got me to reply/10

OP, as a dutchfag living in student rooms of 12m2, let me first tell you got very lucky with that kind of space/price in the Hague. Its an amazing space!

Practical tips:
>get a source of water in your basement. Do you have a tap there or only upstairs? Most rooms i know, even the tiny ones have at least a source of water. In time, you will grow annoyed to have to walk a tiny distance to get a cup of water
>that said; get a tiny kitchen. Even a small cooking plate as in pic related is really helpful. Really, being able to cook something at your apartment will help you feel at home. Even if its just a shitty egg in the morning. If you got money to spend, get one of those mini-kitchens that comes with a refrigerator. Literally takes up 2m2 and its a great addition. Alternatively: discuss with your landlord on buying one, each paying half if you agree to leave it there when you move out
>how the fuck will you heat that much space in winter?
Alright, now for the fun shit:>
>movie projector
>big-ass mirror
>>1002033 modular walls will be a great addition. Especially for parties: simply wall off your bed/personal shit with a wall to prevent the risk of people accidentally fucking up your things
>about that bar idea: find out what the minimum stock should be for a cocktail bar. Learn to make some simple, yet decent cocktails
>depends on how much of a lazy student you are: buy a deepfryer
>dart board!
>foldable table tennis table (diy or cheap on marktplaats)

You got so many amazing options for that kind of space. You're a lucky man
>>
>>1002353

>Why is everyone hating on OP?

>>
>>1002360
Where do you live fellow Dutchman?

I probably will have to install a sink yeah, which is fine. I don't know where to get one of those portable kitchens, where did you get that?

Like I said, I will put in insulated drywal for the bedroom. However, utiluties are included so I can just install industrial heaters.

> dartboard
definetly

> tennis table
nah, fusbol table it is

> deepfryer
likely

> bar
yeah, agreed on the cocktails part

>>1002364
Groningen at first, Nijmegen know. Finishing up masters now.

Mine was already in the room when I got it. Definitely helped me out a lot of times. Versatile as fuck.
Google gives me Hornbach at 400 hundred euros.

fusbol table seems good as well. However, keep in mind that a tabletennis thing can double as a beerpong table. Which is inevitable if you plan on throwing parties. Also, tabletennis is 2+ people.

>utilities included
Take caution and check your contract. Some include a fair use policy or something like it. You dont want to get a giant electrics bill at the end of year 1.

As far as decorating goes: I'd get 1 giant object, it will accentuate the bigness of the room. For example, a huge ass lamp in the middle hanging from the ceiling.

Talking about the ceiling: utilise it. Build a few racks where you put all the shit you dont use often. Waste of space to put it in closets.

And if your landlord truely does not give a fuck, youre rich AND have a lot of time: fireplace and/or jacuzzi.

Very personal wish: mini-library, fake chesterfield, barglobe, etc.
>>
>>1002272
I don't give a fuck about where you were going to put the shower, but HOW. You realise you will need to run both hot and cold water pipes to you location, but hardest of all you will need to run a wastewater pipe away. If you owned the place, yeah no problem, but you are renting.

I don't mean to be too negative, your place looks like it could be a fucking sweet pad. But without having attached bathroom and kitchen facilities it wouldn't be at all practical. I know your parents live in the same town/city but if they aren't closer than a 5 min walk you are not going to be able to rely on that as an alternative for day to day living.

Also, will this be the first time you have lived out of home?
>>
>>1002367
Sounds alright. Masters in what?

Yeah, Hornbach seems fair. But I feel like making it a bit more comfortable with a proper fridge makes more sense. I'll see.

I am thinking about getting one of those big spotlights, seems pretty epic.

A jauzzi.. lol. Barglobe is noted tho.

>>1002420
There is cold water so that is fine, a small electric boiler will solve that problem. But honestly, fuck all that. There is a gym next door that I know the owner of, I'll just get a subscription and work out a lot.. it's good motivation.

Indoor garden rack somewhere to contrast and compliment the barebones setup.

Grab a table/desk put it in that little cubby corner and partition it off. Order cheap steroid raws from Poland for about 3USD per Gram.

2 days of basic photoshop training, a few hours of required chemistry skills (none really a 15 year old could do it easily.)

Purchase dirt cheap 10ml vials, acquire basic brewing material and solubles. Create basic vial labels in photoshop i.e Anon Pharmaceuticals. Launch bare-bones website.

Brew as much as 10-200 vials a week depending on sales, production cost being somewhere around 8USD a vial.

Sell vials for anywhere between $70-$150 usd each (street value of around $200-$300 where I live depending on type of steroid)

Where I live there is very little if any accountability from ordering the raws and I know a metric tonne of people that buy overpriced juice, If my life ever goes to shit I might consider becoming a career criminal,

Aside from initial setup it would take as little as 3 hours a week depending on scale and profit margins would be ridiculous.

Anyways Indoor garden would look great man.

1. Install a drain in the center of the floor so all you ahve to do is hose everything off when you need to clean it. Also in stall a hose
2. Ensure everything you own is made of plastic/not water degradeable
3. Hang a row of meathooks along the roof to hang clothes and other large items.
4. Consider the following: instead of shag carpet, that gathers microdes, just spread some environementally friendly sawdust about every now and then and vacuum it up when it gets soiled.
5. Go-kart track
6. Fight club
7. Sweatshop
8. Make sure you install a DJ table, and for good DJ'ing, make sure you play fog horns between every prime number songs you play

You will need basics of cooking, a bathroom, and a tool box. Also do yourself a favor and get the largest refrigerator you can fit in the door way, or two smaller ones so you always have a place for beer.

Get a couple arcade cabinets, and put some emulators on them. You can build your own from scratch for only a couple hundred bucks. There's all kinds of how-tos and instructables about building retro game emulators. the biggest problem would be making your own side art, but you can probably just find some stencils on line, and spray paint it up in layers.

Bonus points if you can build 2, and interconnect them for multiplayer.

I haven't looked into the price yet either, still looking for a cab to throw it all in.

If you're planning on throwing parties, maybe build a little bar and have a darts board.

again, you can build your own cabinet pretty cheap. Shouldn't take more than 2-3 sheets of plywood, and a couple 2x2s. that's like 30-40 bucks depending on the price of lumber in your area. As for the wiring, I couldn't tell you. all the tutorials I've seen for this type of thing are people using a Raspberry pi to cram it into a handheld. But it should be a whole lot easier with bigger components and more space to work with.

Badass. I'm suggesting some form of foldable wall used to separate your room area from everything else. Like you could install sliding doors or those folding walls schools use to separate multi use rooms like in the music hall. Basically so you lock away your shit. Also could use same idea for corner somewhere for clothes washing machines. If you get projectors you could watch stuff anywhere and can hang that special fabric wherever.
Also get one of those "construction site" sinks and mini fridge to put in your room area.
Get some lights you can co trip on remote so you do t have to walk 12 feet to turn on a lamp and make it to where you can turn on as many or few lights as you wish.

I also suggest you have a fake window so
Where that has a outdoor painting/photo to look at

Do you routinely play video games in the tub?

I think not...

sorta jealous OP, seems like an awesome place, deck it the fuck out. But your 21 dude, be careful with the parties in a place that big. Iv seen some nasty stuff happen in basement parties

Can you purchase a blast door? i like this idea. I would kidnap people. Bring them down; force them to have uncomfortable conversations on topics from home decor, to why which was the best platformer game for the Ps1.

Green drywall does nothing for insulation, it's just moisture proof.
Also, you realise you'd have to drill a shit ton of holes in the walls for that?
It's obvious that you have not thought this through enough. Besides, all these cool ideas will cost you a whole bunch of money.

you can purchase pretty much anything if your money pile is big enough

Basically the people here are incredibly envious of your space, i am as well.

Maybe put clear "coroplast" as room dividers, it has a nice effect and is pretty cheap.

Is the spacing between the pillars and walls standard? You could have movable walls. Let me find a picture of the coroplast room dividers at mozilla's offices in san fransisco. Also greetings from the united states.

My mistake, it was the mozilla japan office: "mozilla-factory"

Here is a photo of the modular coro-plast room dividers.

I'm really digging the floorboards, its going to get annoying walking on concrete at home.
Especially if OP likes going barefoot in the winter.

Do this, have there be a sink/dishwasher at the bar, maybe a primitive pantry by the work. Put locks on the doors.
>>
>>1007471
Welp, at least "bar" and "bed" legible. what else do you need?
>>

just start growing pot/mushrooms and forget the parties and start bringing in the mad dosh

If you are using a space like this for music and such, just as a courtesy, I suggest sound dampeners on the walls. Maybe you can make them decorative, and that may also help with the barren walls. That's my 2 cents anyways.
