390 KB,
New fag to /diy/ searched and couldn't find anything in the catalogue related to machining, cnc, cad, milling, or lathe.
Looking for some info on building my own CNC mill and lathe.
3 axis minimum for the mill is a must.
Workspace needed is 1m-1m-0.3m / 36"-36"-12' maximum

I'm looking to work with aluminum and wood, occasionally small steel parts, but it doesn't need to run fast.
I'd like to do this as cheap as reasonably possible to achieve 0.005" / 0.127mm accuracy.
I'm happy to splurge a bit on ball screws...

1.) What is your current tooling like? Do you already have a workshop reasonably full of tools, or are you stuck with a handful of manual equipment and a jigsaw?

2.) What is your budget? "Cheap as possible" is relative; the one I built has similar-ish work volume to what you want and was much cheaper than a commercial equivalent, but it still ended up totaling around $2000.

Everything looks reasonable at least, and Chinese ballscrews should be able to manage around 0.1mm or better in...

If you need a workspace that large on a budget, you might want to look at routers over mills, should cut wood and ally, but steel you will need a proper mill for.

Current tooling is literally nothing.
I've got a decent set of basic mechanic tools from when I had worked as a dealership mechanic before getting back into IT, so some air tools, cordless ryobishit drill, hand tools.
I do have access to my father in laws tools, one of which is a jigsaw, but his is mostly carpentry stuff and painter stuff.
Budget would be preferably under $3k
I'm not going to be ready soon, I've got a year to save for it at least, most likely a year and a half. But if I hit...

895 KB,
Hello everyone,
i'm an underachiever and cannot keep focused on work i have to do unless my life depends on it. The thing is the most important orals in my life are coming up and i need something to force me to work for hours per day: i know i dont have the will to do so and need to be restrained. So i had this idea:

i'd like to build an electrified bracelet, also featuring a timer and a buzzer, that would be plugged at some at-port device (near my desk) and would produce a loud sound and small (but unpleasant) shocks to my arm when unplugged, so that walking...

The issue is that any safety-override you build in to be able to take it off in an emergency or at the end of your project will be what you use to take the device off.

Likewise, small electronic locks are hard.
>>
>>1012368
i know right... i need to make it distraction proof so i don't plan on putting any emergency takeoff system. Should be safe enough if the voltage of the battery is too low to cause damage, right ?
I thought so... to counter that fact i was planning on putting a simple but constantly electrified lock, or make the buzzer go off at its loudest if the lock is illegally opened. this should be doable right ?

What are you OP? Are you a dog?
Do you really need operant conditioning or are you just running away from your initial problems by making one up in the form of a motivational aid?

That being said, just get a shock collar and hack it to your needs if you feel the way you do. Just throwing a bone here to save some time.

47 KB,
I have this old Bose boombox that sounds better than anything I've ever heard for its footprint (Bose AW-1). So I still use it by hooking it up to my phone with the aux jacks in the back. Works great in my bedroom.

Problem is my Kill-a-watt tells me that the boombox consumes a steady 40 watts when it is turned on, even when it's not playing anything. So I always have to remind myself to flip the power to off when I'm done with it. If it sucked only a few watts while idling I wouldn't mind leaving it on all the time. Are there any mods I can do to reduce...

Sure

Add a signal detection circuit that turns the unit off after the input has idled for a while

Write "turn me off when not in use" on the front.

This has been bothering me for way too fucking long. You see this megaman light capsule? I've been trying to figure what exactly is projecting Dr. Light onto the glass.

I would assume it is either a hacked pico projector with a rapsberry pi, smart phone or some sort of LCD screen projected with a backlight given its 6" by 6" size, but the form factor is really throwing me off.

At this point, I'm not entirely sure if this entire thing is just video magic since the hologram looks really crisp and the top seems...

Probably an arduino.

Where would one get such a medium sized square screen and a magnifying optic to go with it?

What I tried so far:

> poured boiling hot water in the pipe - as fast as I could - and as much as possible

It depends on what is probably clogging the drain.
The proper time to do something is when the drain begins to empty slowly, and don't wait until it's totally clogged.

My issue is usually cooking grease, even tho I don't pour any down the drain. It still builds up like once a year or so.
When the drain starts to go slow, what I do is run hot water for ~2 minutes, and then while the hot water is running, pour about 1/4th to 1/2 of a...

What do? Keep aesthetics in mind I don't wanna asphalt ramp. I heard I can have it cut at a slant to even it out. I could dig a bunch and pull out the volume maybe but that sounds very difficult..

Kill tree, lift slab (if possible), dig out root, re-level and re-lay slab.

I've lifted some pretty big slabs back in the day, I'm not saying it was easy or nice, and you will need help, but it can be done
>>
>>1011176
if you don't remove the tree the root will likely increase in size as the tree grows
it is therefore pointless to try to 'modify' it with a ramp

>>1011186
if you remove the tree then you can just relevel and re lay th slab, therefore it is pointless to modify it

so in conclusion
don't bother getting it 'cut'
>>

Mhm, I hear ya.
Any advice on lifting the whole slab? Tools?

Going to brush up well.

How will you insulate the box?
How about filling the gaps between the box and the pipes?

it's all in a closed off area so I wasn't too worried about insulation, no kids are gonna be able to mess with it. was just going to try it as is for now and see about improvements later. still not sure how well it's going to work.

I bought a telescoping flagpole from HF thinking it came with a stand and shit but the instructions say put it in the ground with concrete.

I'm going to a music festival next weekend and can't do that. How do I get it to stand up? Any ideas?
