So, I'm fresh out of motivation for videogames and most other stuff, so anyone on here want to give me a quick how-to for basic forging? Like swords, blades and the such (or just generally metal shaping) etc. thanks in advance

What are you still doing here, Fallout 4 is out

Well, I COULD be searching /b/ for the occasional "richfag" that is going to give away a copy for a sharpie in someone's pooper pic, but no, I'm just not feeling the hype...

What equipment would be needed to make your own rubber shoe soles?

Is this something you could do in your garage?

You would need a mold and some way to force melted rubber into it.

Injection molding machine and appropriate molds. Then you buy plastic pellets I believe.

So I had this idea to make refrigerator/heater to make kefir in a consistent way. I'll use a peltier element sandwiched between two stock AMD heatsink/fans and I built a board to provide power and switch hot and cold sides to the peltier element with two DPDT relays (one should be enough, the second one is just to prevent a short from happening).

What I didn't think of was a better way to limit current to the peltier than using a big ass resistor in series with it. I have a 5a 12v PSU and I expect the control circuit to use 200ma at most and would like the peltier...

Peltier elements are so weak, why would you want to make one weaker?

Also, even at 3A, your peltier will eventually cost you more in electricity than buying a proper mini-fridge/AC/or whatever you are building.

The cheapest incubator I can find is of a shitty DIY design and will cost more than one year of electricity, the proper ones are expensive lab equipment.

A peltier element will maintain a temperature difference between the two sides, since I don't want more than 30ยบ of difference it's better than a "buying a mini-fridge". If I wanted to buy one rather than making one I'd post in /g/, not /diy/.
>>
>>900997

find the voltage where it draws 3A, adjust the feedback voltage divider in the power supply so that's what it will output.

if it draws 5A at 12.6v or whatever 3A will be somewhere at 11? somewhere close to that.

What are you fueling? Is this just for heat? It's hard to assume what you mean, since this is /diy/, and I've seen some shit.

Yeah like crude basic heating and cooking stuff nothing super refined. I'm interested in it.

Wood alone is a great option. Its cheap, easy to get, carbon neutral and renewable. Look into efficient methods of burning wood, like rocket stoves, inserts, etc.

I'm guessing this is more of a /g/ thing, but what are you asking? Do you want to run/boot off of an external USB drive? it's possible, just not as fast. If you want to replace your internal 2.5 inch HDD with the 2.5 inch HDD inside the USB enclosure, that will probably work and also be faster.
>>
Easy fix.

Buy a small size external hard drive with the same or larger capacity as your current drive.

Download clonezilla and read the instructions.

Clone your current hard drive to the external. using clonezilla.

Open the casing on the external hdd. Open the bottom of you laptop.

Swap the hard drives.

Close everything.

Push power.

If it dosent work then swap back your old hdd and re-read the clonezilla instructions.

I just swapped an old 100gb hdd to a 250gb ssd so i could upgrade to windows 10.

Ok so i have a dc motor, pic is my motor. Im trying to make it variable speed. I bought a bridge rectifier and it works great at full speed. Now i tried using a rotary dimmer with a capacitor with little sucess at low speeds and torque. So im going to get a pwm but not sure how to wire it. Do i still need the bridge rectifier? Or does pwm act as one.
17 replies and 4 images submitted. Click here to view.
>>
>>900816
what kind of rotary dimmer? like a lightswitch?
not a good idea uts not designed for inductive loads like a motor

you can use an autotransformer instead.

pwm is a technique not an object, the components you need depend on what pwm driver you buy or build but if it requires dc you will need to rectify it.
>>
Op here. Is this how to wire it?
>>
>>900816
PWM is still DC. As you can guess from the name, it's just variable pulses from 0 volts to whatever your max voltage is.

I was wondering if there was a way to trick my roommates into thinking they have control of the thermostat?

My girlfriend has rheumatoid arthritis and it hurts her joints when she gets cold. Our roommates know this and even after many discussions, they have decided to keep putting the thermostat at 65 and "cool" instead of 70 and auto like we originally agreed on, because they're hot and they said she was lying about her joints.
I'm tired of the arguing and bickering and everything becoming a pissing match. We have 6 more months on our lease so...

That's a tough one. Roommates? Are you Jack Tripper? If not, and you pay the bills, which I would not be surprised by based on your responses, either step up to the girlfriend or the roomies and use a thermostat with a pin #.

New programmable thermostats can be passcode protected.
Buy, install new thermostats. Program it how you want, set passcode..

Then anon goes to work. Roommates remove his t'stat, install their own, program it how they want and set passcode.

reliability, yes harbor freight ones are cheap, yes you can buy several for the cost of a real bit... no, buying new ones and saving the money will not unfuck that 300$ figured hardwood board that just got ruined when your cheap harbor freight bit failed...

if your using it to fuck around with, or for regular around the house projects, then harbor freight is probably fine... professionally however you'd be better off with a better quality bit.

Rust less. Bought a cheapo set of bits from HF causes I needed one right then. Put them in my bit storage toolbox and came back to them a year later, all were spotted with rust. All my other drill bits? Spotless. Even had a desiccant pack in the toolbox and those cheap pieces of shit STILL rusted.

What would have more force? a coil of 400ft of copper wire or one of 200 ft?

the power source will be 700 volts

this is assuming that wire is the same gauge (18 awg) and that the coil has the same cylinder length

what??
half length is double current so depends how you wind it, further out layers contribute less to a field in the centre.

Building an architectural model out of Basswood

not entirely sure where to start, has to be a partial, setting up the bass and getting a good outline for the proportions shouldn't be too difficult, but what i'm more concerned about is how to get the detail. more specifically for the transept to the left.

out of basswood, or what would be more appropriate?

tl;dr how do i go about details for a basswood architectural model?

not without some kind of ratchet device in the middle.
like a sprung pawl that is at an angle and sprung so when you pull it one way it moves but pull it the other way and the pawl clamps the rope.
but just a knot? no i don't think so.

unless you count a taut-line hitch, a truckers hitch, a munter hitch or a guarde knot.
>>

Google "exploding knots" and see if that helps at all.

Interesting cordage problem. Here's what I found. Your solution will probably have to be some variation of one of the following.

http://www.instructables.com/id/Rope-Tackle-for-Pioneering-Use-Truckers-Hitch/?ALLSTEPS

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Versatackle_knot

You basically need to make a block & tackle using only rope.

Hello DIY.

i dream of some day being able to run a business selling a product to either consumers or manufacturers. i do not yet have a product in mind, however i have recently abandoned a bachelor in health and nutrition in favor of chemistry (chemical engineer), it is my hopes that this education will give me the tools and inspire me to design a product in the likes of chemical compounds for medicinal, construction materials, or even the food industry.

Even though i do not have a product yet, i still feel like figuring out what it takes to start a business,...

First of all congratulations for not being another wageslave just like all other so called STEM geniuses.
You really need to do market research, dont bother trying to manufacture anything that is already being done startup costs are too high. If you aim for new stuff startup costs will be lower simply because you have no competitiors. For example my first (failed) business was 3d printed statues. If Kodak were doing it Id have gotten nowhere but they werent so i had a foothold. Now ive moved on to delivery drones...
