I know of this is more of a "make shit" board but this was the best fit for my problem:

It would be a miracle to recover anything
Photorec seems to be the most recommended recovery software.
Next would be recuva I think.
photorec is open-source, or 'shit' by another name, while recuva is crippled unless you get the paid version.
i'd recommend instead Active@ File Recovery Professional, or Seagate File Recovery, both found on TPB. the latter actually recovers the filenames, whereas the former renames everything into new names like Found_145404647. despite that bit of stupidity, i actually prefer it. each takes about 2 hours to scan a 60gig.
and i wouldn't feel too guilty about the lost book. being forced to re-write something usually makes it way better, coz you can avoid all the first-time blunders, and tangents that go nowhere.
I have a lot of tools which I want to hang over the wall.
However, there is little space.
Do you know if there is a software for this? what is the optimal position of various polygons on a surface?
hang on* the wall
Make a grid on ms paint.
Measure tools
Make a metric ie 1 square on inch/cm etc
Lay out that way.
Only thing I could think of is plotting software but I don't think your want to spend 300 dollars to organize tools

hmm I am not looking for a trial-and-error method, unless it is machine-made
so yes I am curious to know the names of the softwares used by professionnals who have a similar layout problem
I want to fix the latch on my grandma's jewelry box. I have no idea where to start. Any help is appreciated
>>925099
With the lid closed
does the key turn i it? can you post pictures of the latch with lid open and key turned? also pictures of both the box side of the lock, and the lid side
>>925103
No key unfortunately, this thing is old as fuck. I wanna try to get replacement parts for the existing latch rather than replacing the whole mechanism
How much do you guys know about stone floors?
I was cleaning the floor the other day and accidentally used a wrong kind of soap, after I wiped it off I noticed some of the color came off.
There's a spot on the floor now that looks kind of dusty, rest of the floor is black and this spot is a little lighter. There's these kind of signs of wearing off all over the floor but the rest are much smaller and you don't really pay attention to them.
I looked it up online and they said that olive oil can give a worn out slate the color back so I tried it. Looks...

soap wash the entire thing
then leave it as that
>>924724
Out of curiosity, have you tried just mopping it with clear water? Some soaps leave a residue if theyve got additives or "moisturizers"
>>924774
I did, but I'm pretty sure it's not residue since the part even feels more coarse than rest of the floor and looks kind of faint.
I will wash it again tomorrow to see if the oil comes off and test this too
My computer chair is kill. Thus thing is only a few years old and the leather is all cracked and the padding is all gone.
I'm certain many of you spend a lot of time in your computer chair so what's the solution. I'm sick of buying a new chair every few years.
/diy/ myself a chair or just spend the money on a high end Herman Miller?
Nothing lasts forever. That's the simple answer.
>>924238
I don't think anyone is here for the simple answer.
i spend 10 hours a day in mine and go through a chair every year or so. there really isn't shit you can do aside from keep buying chairs. i've spent anywhere from $50 to $800 on a single chair and i can tell you they all last just as long so don't even bother spending a lot. they simply aren't built for heavy use
my current chair was $400 and now a little over a year later there's no padding left and i'm literally sitting on the piece of wood left over
I'm looking for a stationary motor with a drill chuck so I can attach a fleshlight...
Just kidding. I'm doing some brass lapping and shaping and it's becoming frustrating trying to use a normal drill in a vise with rubber bands on the trigger.
http://www.ferreestools.com/woodwindtools/woodwind-bench%20motors.html
Cheap drill presses and mini lathes can be $75-200. But they want $400-500 for it.
Am I just searching wrong and there is a name I should be looking for it under? I don't know what to call it. Half a ghetto lathe? Bench...

I have no idea what you're actually doing, but if a drill in a vise is working... Why not just lay a drill press on it's side?
>>925313
They're 7sually belt driven and that can screw them up. Also that's much more expect then him taking apart a drill and switching out the trigger for a on/off switch.
>>925321
You're looking for a lathe.
Research lathes for wood
Ahoy there, I'm planning to control an arduino mega through usb connected to a pc, the problem is that it needs to be approximately 150m long, I can't use wireless because it's under sea and I don't want to mess with radio signals, there are multiple motors that need to controlled with pwm and multiple sensors that communicate through I2c and a cam (but those are on the arduino side of course)
Would a usb power hub work, if yes, would any work or should I look for a specific one?
>needs to be approximately 150m long
too long. look into rs232 conversion.
>>923579
theres a few usb over ip solutions out there, theres a linux driver for it, but you would most likely have to write the packet decoder onto the arduino, as well as a usb parser.
i know a lot of people do fiber for underwater veichles. perhapse look into that
>>923579
You could use one of these 2$ 433 MHz rf transmitter and receiver pair.
I bought a couple of these and they work great. With a proper antenna you can easily get 100m+
So I tried asking /cgl/ about this, but they pointed me over to you guys instead.
I'm currently in the preliminary design stage of working on a Laser Musket prop from Fallout 4.
I have a general idea of how to make it happen, but there are two questions which I need to answer before I can start making serious progress.
1) The gears linked to the crank handle before the glass ionizing chamber. The rearmost and frontmost wheels rotate in an opposite direction to the central wheel. Would it be wise to use a system of planetary gears (with the frame holding...

This question would be better asked to /k
>>923273
Not really. Nigga is asking how to make 2 gears rotate the opposite way and asking if anyone has a better idea on the light up charging chamber.
I'd answer him but I don't know shit about first problem and I can't think of a better solution for second that isn't a terrible idea.
>>923273
Oh please, if this question got asked in /k/, he'd be laughed out in 5 seconds and pointed at /toy/. Or here.
Thinking about renting out 3 of my extra rooms. Any guides for people interested in this kind of business?
>>921896
Yeah, don't use airbnb.
Are you talking part time or extended rentals like for half a year or more?
If you're in a good centrally located area it'll be easy to rent out rooms to single guys.
Research local print ads and internet sources for going rates of similar rooms and post an ad.
The best people by far in my experience to rent to are young blue collar professionals, i.e. electricians, construction, etc. After that is white collar professionals (not including programmers)...

these two guys will rent it no worries!

>being a drywaller is the worst
Not everybody can do it. A good drywaller is good to have and hard to come by. I take it pic isn't related. Get good at it before you bitch. Anybody that doesn't like their job without getting good at it first - give it a few years- and wants to bitch about it should just quit and do something else. Change your attitude and learn from your peers good or bad learn from it. Your working, keep it up

Dry wall, sheet rock thread? My parents just added an addition to their late life stage lake house. Concrete poured, framing done, roof done, electrical done. Today I drove 1.45 hours away and we hung up 500 sq ft of ceiling insulation, batting pink r-19. And then hung up a bunch of wall stuff. Then crawled up and sank the catwalk in. I'll be doing more work on that later. Not happy with it. They got the windows in and its all sealed up, except for soffit, and siding. Will be done tomorrow by the framer. Next step...

hey /diy/,
i'm trying to recreate the soot stains that appears on fireplaces after some times. any ideas what material i could burn in order to create such stains quickly?
>>925338
if you want to do it without burning shit, use dark grey spray paint and just mist the spray on like in that pic. that way you have a permanent look and dont need to wait years for the look by burning stuff naturally
>>925340
i thought about it, did some test, but the results were inconclusive. i would like it to be real soot.
basically i have this white board which i need to coat with soot at the bottom, i figured if i burned some coal and just held the board over the smoke for a little while i would eventually get some stains pretty quickly.
but i think i can find something better to burn than coal
>>925344
One advice buy a fire extinguisher before you fuck around
Just burn a lot of wood in there with the windows open and a plug in the chimmney
Hey /diy/. I need to charge my Baofeng UV5R on the go, and I was wondering if I could use this step up converter ( http://www.powerstream.com/Product3.htm ) to charge it. The portable battery I'm using is the EasyAcc 9000mAh battery which has an output of 5V and 2.1A, while the Baofeng needs 8.4V at 400mA...
Thanks for your help!
>>923216
yes.
>8.4vx0.4A = 3.4W
>5vx2.1A =10.5W
plenty of power. that thing is fucking huge though. just search ebay for "buck stepup" to get something lighter(50g or so net mass), smaller and that costs 1$
>>923234
Buck converters reduce voltage. He needs a boost converter. That thing doesn't really look that big either imho

This should be good enough, $1.30 shipped.
Does it look good ? or like shit ? Dear Welders, tell me your experience and help me with information to make a better welding. Thank you anons!
Peace and Love upon you!
I'd pay.
The seam is beautiful.
Kinda hard to tell, but it looks like the flange weld was a little cold.(looks convex at the part facing the camera-could just be the pic.)
I'm not a welder but spent years in a fab shop.
NICE!

i recently made an "remotly controlled motorized projection screen" kindoff thing..
i've used a random HiFi Amp remote controller and a IR Receiver scavaged from a dead TV in pair with an Arduino, to decode the codes comming from the remote.
i then used those codes to bring the projection screen up or down with a Servo, and turn the Video-Projector On/off and also the light in the room On/Off...
Most of the thing were scavaged and the Arduino is actualy a cheap chinese replica of a Arduino Nano so.... you know, it was a fun little project....
I'm trying to figure out a flowchart for this process of wrong betting. I hope i'm on the right board to do this. If i'm not please refer me to a better place.
This is a strategy of betting in the game of craps. My goal is to create a Computer program that will replicate this process in order to test to see if this author is full of shit or not. The problem is, is that i'm not sure if i have my flowchart drawn correctly. I came here to get a second opinion on this.
