"The Monster" is gonna be a nice rollercoaster. Been a bit since we had some proper action going on. Plenty of that this issue, as well as a slight code towards the end which isn't hard to figure out but people might like. Emotions are gonna run wild, people are getting angry.

I'm happy. Starts Friday.
How you guys doing?

>Update archives
Yeah, been meaning to do that. Maybe later today. Most of our hits come from tapastic now, so I can openly admit I lost focus on updating those archives.

I'll get it done by Friday at the latest. Should be getting around to getting a new site in a month or two as well, one that's a bit nicer than a tumblr.

Here's a rough sketch from the little "Social Media" side-project we're doing with the Sisters.

A point to anyone who can decipher the costumes.
>>
>>77363942
>Most of our hits come from tapastic now, so I can openly admit I lost focus on updating those archives.

I've been meaning to get onto that as well, perhaps once I finish uploading the entirety of the current chapter on my own site
How intuitive is it? I tend to be rather inept with social media, I tend get around but I always find it frustrating when learning how to post/upload on a new site

Also minor dialogue mistake I noticed as I was catching up on your comic: on your Oct 22 update, Handsome Dan says "Your sister's been trying been trying to reach you [...]". Not really a big deal, but I figured maybe I'd want to know if if you ever have the time to fix it

Yes. Table 124 in New Dock Hall. With a new comic out if everything goes smoothly:

> Sending issue #3 of comic to printers; Copy&Paste and edit old email. 3 weeks should be plenty of time.
> Forget about it for a week.
> Send reminder email to printers as haven't heard back properly yet.
> Printer tells me the link to download the file doesn't work.
> It's for issue #1.
> Send link to issue #3.
> Printer sends back a pdf for checking.
> I sent them a link to the wrong version of issue #3.
> Send back link to right version of issue #3, telling them to discard the previous one.
> Printer sends back a pdf for checking.
> It's all good, give them the green light to proceed.
> Now we wait.

I'm fairly confident that my printer will come through, as he specialises in printing comics, regularly visits comic conventions, and will personally deliver to people's tables at the con if necessary (as he did with issue #2 at last year's Thought Bubble). Ideally I'll have it by Thursday morning so I can check and prep them properly, but as long as I get them for the con it'll be OK.

If you're a UK anon who hasn't been to Thought Bubble, then seriously consider going. Unlike other "comic" conventions which are really pop culture multi-media affairs, TB really is all about the comics.
>>
>>77363989
Ah jeeze. That is embarrassing. I'll see that gets patched up.
Tapastic is pretty intuitive. Just hit preview to make sure your pages are in the right order and all's good. I enjoy the scroll-to-read, it is a nice feature.

>>
>>77367735

I really think some of you non-native English speakers really need a native speaker to proofread your dialogue a bit before you post some of these pages.

I mean, this isn't too bad really, but over all it feels kinda clunky.

In your second panel, the first box you have "Lufty" I'm assuming you mean "Lofty." In the box right next to it

>None of it seen real to me

I assume you mean "seems" or "seemed." Seemed is probably what you're looking for, but you continually switch from past tense to present tense, so I am not totally sure which you are going for.

Also, the cluster of boxes about halfway down, starting with

>You didn't merely influence these artifacts

The five dialogue boxes are a little cramped. I actually wasn't totally sure at first which box I was supposed to read next. You might want to find a way to try to space that out a little better.

Minor thing, but I'm also not totally sure why you suddenly switch from boxes with tails to more rounded bubbles.

I mean, the story overall makes sense, and it is reasonably interesting, and your art, as usually is pretty sweet too, so...just some thoughts.

>>77368474

There's no need to facepalm. I feel like it is about 85~90% of the way to where it needs to be.

I understand what is going on (that's the important thing) and the dialogue is more interesting and better than some of the other non-natives here, it just seems a little stilted in some areas.

Hey, illustration looks smooth and the character designs overall are relatable. Pretty good! I especially like the stylization you got going on in there.
>>
I have a couple of questions.

I had an idea for a character who can control time, and he would use this power to stop people in time, maybe accelerate time as well.

But whats a good way to show off that someone is frozen in time? Seems like its hard to pull off in a comic, since pictures don't move anyway.

Also I had this other idea for a comic, its going to feature robots versus Kaijus

Only thing is its humans actually turning into the robots to fight monsters.

Has this been done before? I was thinking they could be sort of organic or maybe magical robots.

But I don't quite know yet how to make this work.

>>
>>77369134
>whats a good way to show off that someone is frozen in time?

An utter absence of motion lines for one; also no speech or thought balloons.
Holding the same static pose for several consecutive panels. Particularly if they were mid-step, or jumping, or otherwise off balance when it happened.
They drop something at the moment they're frozen, and it's suspended in time/mid-air with them (especially if it's a liquid).
>>
>>77362811

I have this idea I've been kicking around for a while but will never do cause i have no talent.

People with various super powers exist but none of them to an over powered degree. To put it in context something like "Spiderman" would be overall stronger than any of the people with special abilities in this world and mind control/mind reading does not exist either (that is key).

So the plot is this. Of the few people that have these abilities the government decides "why not use them and make them special agents for us to help with disasters, crime, ect". The identities are of course kept topic secret per usual as are the powers of each as much as possible.

Anyway like I said these characters are not over powered and to try to reduce the issue of them dying on the job they are offered side kicks. These are not people with powers but people who went to special training academies. Often Ivy league recruits to even get in. Each person is different but generally they excel at security, weaponry and such.

After an applicant graduates they can choose to work for a hero.

Anyway the plot is this. A side kick that graduated just about top of his class has been working with one of the most successful, powerful and loved heros in the country for the past 5 years or so. He is one of the only people that knows the full details of his powers, personal life, ect. He even invented some things himself to great effect and is seen one of the true geniuses among his peers.

He walks in one morning to the secret base noticing all the security is down and doors unlocked and finds the hero dead in a bloody mess on the floor.

He calls the organization to inform them of this and an investigation immediately starts. Soon he is treated like the lead suspect as all the evidence points to him. However, some things he knows about this hero are not so squeaky clean and he starts his own investigation to clear his name before it is too late.

>>77368389
Hey thanks man, this is really helpful. Although getting friend to look over your things... I don't know, sometimes I feel like I am bothering people. Posting in the thread usually means people only reply because they wanted to. Although I could ask friends who I collaborated with to help out.

>>77368160
Hm, the reason I put them on the storyboard and sketches, is so I can either trim them or move them around, or to change the art to accommodate it. Just something that is easier to see when its on the page. I am not page by page with this, so I can and trim or add pages if I feel like it needed it.
>>
>>77369796

Thank you. The world does become important though and plays a big part in the plot.

I guess I will spoil it since i won't write it every do the comic anyway :P

First he and the government go through the list of enemies the hero has but none of them did it and that can be proven. The side kick then turns to his personal life and talked to a female super hero he knows the deceased was having an affair with but that seems like a dead end.

However at this point his own personal investigation is brought to a halt when he himself is brought in for questioning. The report comes back that all the security was properly in place. No one broke in. Therefore whoever did the killing had to know all about the security system in place. That is something only those at the very top of this organization and the hero/sidekick should know. Also physical evidence at the crime scene points to him. He knows he is about to be arrested and uses a device he made to escape though with great difficulty.

Man hunt is on and he is America's most wanted over night. More to come.

Now he is suspect
>>
>>77369796

Now he is suspect #1 :P

He grabs gear from his secret stash and uses it to go into hiding trying to investigate what really happened. First he looks into the organization and after finding several seedy problems but nothing that leads to a who actually killed him. Anyone long story short...

It was the side kick of the super hero the dead hero was having an affair with. the female super hero knew the security cause they would sneak in there to actually have the affair sometimes and her side kick learned in from following her in secret. She was in love with her and hoped killing him would make it possible for them to be together somehow. Doesn't work out. She almost kills female super hero too but the side kick saves the day and also exposes the organization after for covering up details of the murder for various reasons.

Female side kick goes to the mad house and he is able to continue his post once more as a side kick but decides not to cause the system sucks and is broken and goes into doing hero duty himself to great success.

Lazy artist-less writer here.

Which should I check and ask for reviews first, characters or storylines?
I feel that once you have your characters and themes nailed down the plot comes naturally.
>>
>>77375094
In my experience as a writer, characters and storylines develop hand in hand. You come up with the basics for the characters, and then the stories start to come naturally, and as you explore those stories, the characters grow from their experiences, and with this new character growth you can discover more stories to write, and so on and so forth. It's a wonderful cycle.

What do you do when you want to kiss your own character?
>>
>>77380307
Narrow down your workload by figuring out the location and rough period of influence you'll be writing about.
Watch documentaries about the time and place, and any other places or points with significant influence on it.

The rest technically does itself since anyone familiar with history can just fill in the gaps with a few swift references made on your part, trust me it's better to simply mention X politician or Y monarch doing this or that at the time in passing than to try to write that event as a scene and butcher it with unnatural characterization. This way anyone who has their own interpretation of the figures of the time will do the imagining for you instead of being put off that you see one person or another in a certain positive or negative light.

This is a kind of strange piece of advice but I also find it helps to forget what time period you're writing in, your characters come off more natural if they're not doing that thing Bojack made a joke about where they're always reminding the audience what specific time period it is by talking a certain way or some other such forced narrative. A reference to an existing person isn't so bad since it could be relevant to the character's associates, but talking about some specific event like it's already happened and the significance is from a modern view is off putting. For example a documentary I watched made it known to me that at the time no one knew during the first World War that it would be as long or problematic as it was, we do so we can wax on about that, but a character at the time would most likely just be baffled as the people at the time were with the unfolding events. Hell, they even got used to it eventually so really it's only because we look back from our world now do we have the reaction we do.

tl;dr forget you're writing history and just write in the moment.

Hey I just defeated writer's block yesterday and I did it by forcing myself to continue this one scene by writing something awful that would advance the plot but over-explain everything, but it helped because all I had to do after that was turn the dialogue a bit more natural and deleted some of the over-explaining and what I was left with was a scene that was clear and took the story forward.

Writing is hard bro. There's been times where I've sat in front of a layout for an hour without laying my pencil on the paper because I didn't know how to write the scene I wanted without it dragging for three times the intended length.

Thanks! It's planned to be pretty long. You can read it at Facebook dot com slash spiritlegends and there are the first two issues animated on there as well
>>
>>77385231
Yeah there's times when writing is easier. But I think writing is all about learning the steps to get in to the zone no matter how uninspired one feels at the moment. It's a skill that can be learned.
>>
>>77385394
Plan the ending. Don't make it too long. Just saying this because the experience of finishing a story is the most rewarding and valuable things about storytelling and many webcomic artists have difficulties finishing their comics because it takes a lot of work and the script blows in to a 1000 pages long epic and the artist never gets to try all the other ideas and uses all his creative energy on a single project. Not saying you're doing it right now but just consider it. Otherwise, I'm impressed how far you've gotten with the comic.

Edit the story and plan the date it finishes. Trust me its worth it in the long run.
>>
>>77381442
Just like art, writing is a skill that can take years to properly develop. In a comic, writing and art go hand in hand, elevating each other.
>>
>>77385782
Yeah, people who have never tried making comics tend to have a real hard time understanding that writing is a skill you develop much like any art.
One of my earlier chapter is a wordy-as-fuck expo-dump because I didn't really know what to prioritize.
>>
>>77386346
I think we should talk about writing in this thread more often. I would give anything to go back in time and slap myself for not researching plot structure and learning to edit properly. I thought length was a good thing. I thought the ending would just work itself out once I get there. Or even worse -- something I tried to avoid ending the story because I thought you were supposed to keep going as long as there are more ideas I can come up with and endings are just a sign of running out of them. Also I never planned the theme or made drafts. Man. No wonder I almost never finished anything. What saved me was short stories. I started valuing them and realized that they aren't any easier than longer stories. And that's when I started studying if there was some kind of a trick or technique to learn. I feel like that is when I truly started this hobby.

>>
>>77387137
I don't think there's a problem with not having a clear end in mind for your comic as long as you have a good structure within the different story arcs. There are lots of good comics and manga that are carried by an interesting protagonist who gets thrown into a bunch of story arcs that can basically be structured like standalone short stories, but are connected by an overarching plot and theme that is not even close to ending anytime soon.
>>
>>77381831
I actually just started it about a month ago and only made the tumblr for it in the last week so that's probably the main reason no one knows about it. I haven't really been advertising it either so really only my deviantart watchers have seen it. I've been really hesitant about putting it out there, else I would storytime it or something.

The PPG fandom is still surprisingly big, and Cartoon Network just put out a bunch of crossover comics with the characters (which is what convinced me to do my series, actually).

>>77385231
So many problems in my life could have been solved had I been 21 when I was 11, anon.

On the subject of writing, before this comic I've always tried to take a "write as you go" approach and leave the ending for later and it does NOT work. Writers block takes hold more easily if you don't know where you're going. In addition I think it's very important to consider the themes and ideas of your story so you can tell it more effectively/coherently and create a satisfying ending. Even if your webcomic is meant to be an ongoing epic spanning years, I would still have an ending in mind while doing it.

I think "Overlore" might be something along the lines of having your characters explain everything.

It can also be, like, if you have a bunch of technobabble/sci-fi/magic terms and diction that is just made up for your story. If you have a bunch of really crazy, weird, hard to pronounce/remember words, people might be intrigued at first, but after a while, it just gets hard to remember what is what.

That makes sense and I'll definitely keep that in mind as I write my stories. i guess Ill really need to be aware and attempt to get lore down in non expository ways, like a carving in an ancient ruin, I'm definitely going to try and have the religion of the world actually be a somewhat exaggerated version of what actually happened, and some parts need to be exposited through the oldking, but that will be a climax and hopefully forgivable.

I think you "overlore" when we've spent more time explaining the world than progressive with the adventure past the prologue/first chapter. IDEALLY I think in a comic you'd develop the world through the story and background elements rather than having a character explain everything to the audience.

This post to me reads like someone who doesn't want to put in the effort to effectively promote their comic, as well as a person who thinks that their comic should just magically become successful overnight. Basically all of the "big" webcomics that are around today started off totally unknown, but they somehow managed to grow, most of them without a support network outside of who the author happened to know and who happened to come across their comic by chance.
>>
>>77392085

This made me smile. Could have used variation on the hair torso to make this funnier.
>>
>>77391946

Taptastic is great. There's a lot of high quality comics on it that draw a viewership that want to read webcomics. The interface is really good. You don't need your own website unless you want to run ads.
>>
How do you "think" the panelling for the vertical webcomic format? Is there some things to know in particular, or do you just use classic comic science?
>>
>>77404390
what do you mean? vertical webcomic format doesn't need any thought towards paneling.. you just put one below the other
>>
>>77404390
The vertical panel format is pretty new to comics actually. Since readers can more smoothly navigate the page by scrolling, remember that the action should be mostly moving downwards. (Not all of course, but major, page filling actions)

Keep in mind that your readers won't know what's on the bottom panel until they scroll down to it. Use this to your advantage.
>>
>>77404230
Thanks anon! I'm glad I could bring a smile to your day.
I'll keep your advice in mind.
>>
Is there any webcomic artist that became relatively popular besides ONE?
>>
>>77404781
The guy who made Axe cop got his own show.
>>
>>77405075
unfortunately he's evidently so hard up for money he has no time to do the comic.. i guess it and the show made him that little money
sucks because there was a really limited time where his little brother could participate before being too old, ykno
>>
>>77405169
oh and he also evidently has no time to do his other comic.. which is too bad because it showed promise but was moving slowly as fuck
i wonder what he's doing for a living
>>
>>77403970
"If" my comic is new and I am unexperienced, I'm not going to hide my comic on a site and just tweet about it. Heck, It it what I've been doing 2 years. I promoted my comic on tumblr, twitter, facebook. Nothing. Then, overnight I got a bunch of readers on one of those hosting sites. The site I neglected the most. Big communities DO help, I don't get why not use them at all. They are tools, after all.

Of course I want to get my own site who doesn't. I'm just wondering if it's useful when you are just starting.

In that terrible dread fugue state between the waking world and sleeping.Got a business dinner with a client I wanna take a hatchet to tomorrow.

Have a panel I liked from tomorrow/Friday's update of the Sisters.

>>77381692
Too centered, lacks stuff going on below the sign. Could work, but the angle sort of demands a little drag; if that makes any sense?

>>77377714
Good on you. Love your stuff, looking forward to the conclusion.
>>
>>77406861
His story is actually good. And some people probably liked his stuff before it came to Murata remaking it.
I think sometimes a comic with shit art can still be good if it has the other qualities.
As an example, Go Nagai was pretty terrible at the start of Devilman. It had some really nice panels but it was something that could be considered as bad art in general, fundamentals-wise.

Working on some rough drafts to get a feel for the characters, composition, and atmosphere of my webcomic.
Thoughts on this? Its a bust of the protagonist as he decisively agrees to help

Any feedback appreciated
>>
>obvious bait

ONE isnt good at drawing, and im guessing, he's come to terms with it. Ive read the entire webcomic, the entire manga version, and watched the anime out too, Its picked up because his story is A1, Great characters, sorta normal feely anime stuff that just gets shitted on by the premise of the story. Its funny, original, and obviously refreshing enough to catch A LOT of attention

>is this REALLY popular?
Yup.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AUtBRGHe3aE
It became popular because the subject matter was good enough that people looked past the art. Better art was just icing. Mob Psycho 100 will probably get an adaptation too. Same thing happened with AoT too.
>>
>>77409162

Overall: Not bad.

Nitpicks: The hair and mouth. He needs a bit more hair on the sides. Like about where the hairline makes it's descent to the ear. You've sorta got it like it's going straight down and back, when really it comes a bit more towards the front of the face.

Mouth: Something about the mouth makes it read more like a graphic. Like you learned a shorthand for how to draw open mouths and put it on his face. Or at least, like your construction of that area needs to be a bit more referenced so it wraps around better.

Also, watch your lines. The sketchy line always feels cool to make, but looks very non-committal. Don't be afraid to make single, strong, decisive lines. It'll come off more like you've got confidence in your work.

But yeah, overall, it's totally fine, save for a few bits here and there.
>>
>>77409144
There's a lot of luck involved in making it m'afraid
>>
>>77409263
Thanks a million for the feedback, I really wouldn't be conscientious of those bits had they not been pointed out.

I'll think about what the character is saying, think of the most embellished part and draw the mouth saying that

As for the sketchiness I turned a lazy rough into a less lazy one, but almost everything is on 1 layer, so I did too much to go over, and too much to erase it all.

I'm also not good at hair, really at all. I need to play around and find what's natural and suits my style, while remaining correct

Less details and you'lle be fine. You might want to condsider less accuracy and just draw it like you mean it. There are a lot of great tutorials for shading, and I think you should check them out. The lines are a bit scratchy at the moment. Not that it ruins the picture -- actually I think if you had left them out, the picture would breathe more. By breathing I mean the amount of lines in a picture guides the eye, and you may want us to look at the whole picture and the general emotional mood of the character rather than the wrinkles on his shirt.

So what I would suggest, is that experiment with making longer, more confident strokes and less details and shading. Make it minimal. See how it turns out. I think you will find that its faster and more relaxed. Then you can gradually start learning more shading techniques from tutorials and as you draw the comic.

So relax. Don't have to overdraw it. That's all. You got a great atmosphere going on. Melancholy and conflict pops out.

>What saved me was short stories. I started valuing them and realized that they aren't any easier than longer stories. And that's when I started studying if there was some kind of a trick or technique to learn. I feel like that is when I truly started this hobby.

Yeah, trying to go straight into writing an epic story without having drawn shorter stories is like trying to to go straight into srawing an epic comic without having studied figure drawing. Mine actually started as a series of short stories, but I wish I had done more before "rebooting" it into a larger story.

>>77387935
Yeah, I'm in the same boat.
I had a GENERAL idea of how I wanted the comic to end (it's rather episodic, with each chapter standing alone for the most part and connected by a larger plot), but as you keep writing you realize that your first ideas weren't the best, you change things to the point where your orriginal ending makes less sense, scenes you had planned get cut for pacing's sake.
My story is close to being 10% done but a lot I had planned has changed from the begining, I know my limits better and how much to insert into a story. I'm sure most people here will look back at their earlier chapters and regret them

Heya folks, I've been KO for a couple days. I've just made a change to the website, basically putting 2 pages together on the same page.
