Onto the mammoth task of blacklining. Ideally i'd like to try and capture a kind of laid back and comfy feel in a kind of Kino's Journey way.

An traveler ventures to a nature-reclaimed edifice only to find she is not alone.

That's a bit dramatic, but I don't really show anyone my early sketches or designs either, so I can sort of understand it. Might be worth starting with a short story or something simple like that if she's particularly worried about her skills, though. If she's new to the whole comics thing it'll help a lot to get a little critique and practice in with the proper comic format before diving into something big.

So I'm doing a comic. It's not a serious story or anything, it's just a light comic called Juneau, its about a short 'thicc' girl (named Juneau, go figure) running around punching gods in the face. This is my first comic so I'm trying to do my best here and learn everything I need to to make this better. Im studying on the side but yeah. Expect this within a month. I'd be glad for people to shit on it.

I need some input from you guys on how a certain mechanic in my story is going to work, if you don't mind reading a bit.

The story revolves around a kid jumping back and forth between a fantasy world and the real world, Pan's Labyrinth style, but I'm having trouble deciding just how that would work.

The world itself is actually a self-contained cluster of memories from an ancient god and all his creations, who are all sealed inside a tree. The idea is that getting near the tree pulls you inside, and each time you do, some of your memories get caught inside and vice versa.

My problem is I don't have a set way to leave the world.

One idea is to have you "wake up" as if you were in a dream, but that's inconsistent and feels like more a cop-out than a legitimate plot point.

The next idea is to die inside the world, but that eliminates all risk.

The last idea involves an item that essentially grants wishes, so basically you wish yourself out, but that item doesn't come up for a while, and I need to have him be able to leave before then.

Finally, I don't really know where I'd have the character end up once he's out. By the tree again, in his bed, who knows.

Any thoughts, suggestions?
>>
>>82510294
Go play Alice McGee's Wonderland whatever it's called but the second game, not the first.
In that, she only wakes up after major plot points to not draw the player too far into the game and forgetting her real life counterpart exists.
>>
>>82510294

What if the way to switch out is to swap places with someone outside the dream?

That could allow you to get more people into the dream world, and more people into the dream world out into the real world.

>>
>>82510501
That's an interesting take, but a bit beyond the range of where I want the story to go. I want it to be a story for one, almost to the point where you don't know if it happened at all. Really good idea though - I'll keep it in mind.

>there's an item you can wish yourself out with but they dont get it for a while
ding! RPG rules. Perfect solution: you can only leave the treeworld when you find a special branch-with-fruit-on-it which contains a portal back to real life. or just a portal.. or a special stump with a portal in it.. whatever. You only find them every so often (possibly only when you've jogged the god's memories a bit or broken open some that were sealed) so that leaves a possibility of tension. like sliders, you can't be sure when another one's going to show up
>>

>>
>>82510946
>or just a portal.. or a special stump with a portal in it..

I actually do have something like that... basically weak points in the world that leak the same essence as the wish-granting item. Perhaps I can re-work them somehow.

Also, glad to see the concept is at least interesting.
>>
>>82510980
>i think he means all on one SITE.

Oh. Well, I know Tapastic's a thing, but creators have to submit their comics there.

Isn't RSS used for that? I don't know much about how that works, but I seem to remember it's something along the lines of that.
>>
>>82511211
yeah, or maybe just.. i mean, do you have a form in mind for said object? because like, if it turns out to be a compact, you could find whiffs of makeup dust. ashes if it's an ashtray, etc
>>
how do you feel about minor jokes that end up coming back as a major plot point?
>>
>>82511687
They're alright.
I have none in my comic except something something fractals *cue laughter* except that will be explained fairly early.
>>
>>82511687
i only regret one i ever did, because it took something slightly funny and changed it into something mundane. basically it retroactively ruined the joke by making it no longer a joke
venture bros has a bit of this. the really old joke names they brought up at random.. now we know who those people are, so it's no longer a joke
>>
>>82511737
What about things that seem minor or random but come back much later? It's not childish to write like that, right?
>>
>>82511237
>do you have a form in mind for said object?

Yes, actually. They take form as bodies of water, like a small rejuvenating pool.

Maybe every time he dives into a body of water, there's a chance he'll get sent back. That could even play into the mechanic that the more you visit, the harder it is to leave, since the chance could decrease.

That sound reasonable?
>>
>>82511876
Probably not. I remember a comic that did it but I forgot which.
Not Homestuck, they did it but not that comic.

>>
>>82512057
that's actually neat. i was going to say random vials from said body of water, so when you actually discover the BODy it's like OH it's a whole spring of that stuff we've been using
but actually that works too. the idea of it getting harder to leave makes a lot of sense. especially if his memories are mingling with the god's memories.. yeah. hell that even fits in with the sleep metaphor, as hitting someone with cold water is a traditional waking technique.. and one that decreases in efficacy over time
>>

Some of it was story but eh sure. It wasn't exactly comical. I just watched i because she was my inspiration.

I still would watch it. It would be like those cutscenes from Alice McGee's Wonderland or Psychonauts and I have good memories of watching those deleted scenes from movies like Bee Movie or Dune because, I dunno, but at least I don't look down on the practice.
Do eet.
I think I used to do it when I was 10 but my stories were nonsensical to the modern me (two people talking, one gets shot, cut to both of them locked up and chained in a room screaming, cut to a girl at a front door, she slowly fades away) so I'm sure you could do better.

A good portion of them because I can change voices. I'm getting my old theater group together.
>>
>>82513056
Your figure drawing skills are on point, but this is one hell of an unappealing way to start. The mysterious narration, lady lying on the ground and other lady shouting "You betrayed me!" in a melodramatic fashion can give readers mood whiplash, which doesn't seem to be what you're going for given your uniform, orderly, but ever so slightly askew panelling.

I can't give you a really good rundown when there's only one page to pull from, but your art's on point.
>>
>>82513921
Oh shit, I didn't even notice it was the first page.
Yeah, I thought that was like some random page.
>>
>>82513921
It feel like a start of a murder case in Phoenix Wright desu
>>
>>82513761
if you say so.. this doesnt feel like a start to me
>>
>>82514031
Not really.
An Ace Attorney opening immediately depicts an immediately understandable scenario, but either leaves a lot of blanks or pushes the player into thinking things they KNOW are false (like "my defendant did it").

This page gives us a cryptic narration next to some broken windows, a pan out to an establishing shot (which probably should have been the first panel), a shot of some girl on the ground, and a girl shouting dramatically.

We can gather what's going on based on this, but it's not really like Ace Attorney's cold opens at all.
>>
>>82514163
Fair enough
Maybe the author just wants an intro with a "kick". I have writer friends who are into the same thing. Then there are others who are into the more shocking intros to get new readers with ADHD to keep turning the page.
>>

>>
>>82514363
Haha was that too triggering? I dont have anything against his page as well. English is not my first language so pardon if thats sounded rude. I even employ the same tactic myself eventhough my writer friends warn me about it. They say "If youre going to make that kind of intro, it'll be difficult to keep the tension up for the rest of the story. The result is high tension at the start and then it will crumble down until the peak of the story."

Or "you realize that'll be the first impression on your comic, right?"

I get what theyre saying.
>>
>>82514555
I wouldn't say "triggering", just a bit condescending. No harm done, I just think whether people wanna start fast or slow shouldn't get labelled like that.
>>
>>82513921
Thanks! I understand what you mean, my paneling could've probably been a lot better in this page but yeah, like >>82514290 said, I'm hoping for your "what?", followed with a page turn.
I've been trying to improve my art since November when I decided to go full on into comics, I think I'm "getting there" but I have this constant "not good enough" in the back of my head. It's really nice to hear that somebody thinks I'm decent.

Anyways, thanks for the feedback. I don't know if I will have time to rework the page but hopefully I can use that knowledge in future projects.

Don't take this the wrong way but I see at least six characters yet the background is literally just green grass(?) with a blue sky. I guess you at the very least drew clouds though even if lazily. Couldn't even draw grass under the guy shoe in the last panel, for all I know they are all walking on a giant green sheet. You seem to care way too much on the characters but couldn't give a shit about the comic as a whole. Ever though about just writing the story out, you know normal text format? It isn't like you even need the pictures to be honest.

I'm really happy with the structure, pace, buildup of my story, but goddamn it it's not funny enough yet. I find the hardest of writing is punching up the jokes so that they're funny enough. Unless it's something that just 'came' to me. Comedy is a bitch if you have high standards for it.

Crowdwriting time? Can we help?
>>
>>82515377

probably?

It was basically just the setup. The fact that the main characters re-purposed space junk themselves instead of the company having robots do it. That made more sense, so rather than being there themselves they essentially monitor and maintenance the robots in an assigned sector -- should a problem present itself that the robot isn't programmed to handle. Most of what their job entails is prepping the robots, releasing them, and just watching and calling other people.

I've had this idea for a web comic in my head for over a year and a half, but I've been too scared to start it because of my art, unfortunately, but recently I think my art has improved to this point to where I could finally start it and not have the anatomical errors among other art flaws be too distracting for the reader
I want it to be episodic for the first few chapters then slowly delve into a main story as it progresses, but I'm having trouble deciding how to actually start the series. Should I just jump right into an episodic chapter or should I just start with the protagonist's origins? Should I try to do both at the same time somehow? what do you guys think?
>>
>>82516330
not him but i liked your shading a lot back in that era when everything was lit by single colors because i forget why, and before that when there was an extended outdoor winter sequence.. that shading was great. this.. this is not really working
>>
>>82516455
okay probably not backgrounds.
>>82516459
start with the episodic stuff, but make REFERENCE to the origins and the upcoming story. make out like it's normal that there is a story, and make it something the fans WANT to know more about in the future
then when it comes they'll be like OH FINALLY

>Experimenting
No, it's called being a retard. Stylization is spectrum of deviation from reality. As such, the colors must reflect that. A highly symbolized style (cartooney) needs highly simplified colors to match the simplified shapes. Otherwise there's a jarring disconnect.

It doesn't take "experimenting". It takes reading a fucking book, or looking up a video on youtube.

It's a story about how a couple of people working a shitty job come across an alien life form and are some what pushed into protecting that life form. (The alien in question being a Bear from Earth.)

The whole story is basically about them fumbling their way through space trying to find this Bear's home, and eventually stumbling into a huge galactic conspiracy.

Here's a synopsis of the first part I'm working on.

The first story is about discovering the bear and subsequently being dragged into the conflict around the sector they're currently watching. Without any way to get off of the planet they've ended up on, they fruitlessly try to communicate and navigate their way to obtaining a ship while being hindered by the Bear and its various mannerisms/attempts to eat things through its space helmet. Eventually they find someone who can speak their language and learn he can provide a ship for them, if they offer themselves as fighters for his latest attack plan against the opposition. The crew tries diplomacy but come to find the conflict had been started by their company incentivizing a war between the two sectors to capitalizing on the junk left over from their many battles. They try to make this apparent to the combatants, but the conflict is weighed down by too much blood to be thrown away by the revelation. Unable to bring peace, the crew narrowly escapes the crossfire of the latest encounter and escape with their newly obtained ship.

That might be the best thing i've ever read
though it's also weirdly familiar... but I don't think it's ripping anything off.
The question is, can this support a long comic? Because it sounds to me like it would only be so long.. a little self-contained 'movie' length comic
>>
>>82515268
Not much you can do with that?! There's all kinds of parks with all kinds of plants, fountains, benches, other people, decorations, etc... you're just plain uncreative if a grassy field and a blue sky is all you can squeeze out of a park.
>>
>>82516952

>The question is, can this support a long comic?

Maybe. The whole thing started with me going "I want to make a space comic where none of the characters are humans," so I'm kind of winging it. there's definitely an arc for the characters written out, the conspiracy's all locked in, but there needs to be more fleshing out. I have no idea how long it could be, but the characters definitely do go a long way from where they start.

>though it's also weirdly familiar... but I don't think it's ripping anything off.

The situation in that first bit is something that actually happens in the real world for various resources. I just figured re-appropriating that would fit here.

No, you get out. You and your idea of speshul loner sekrit club, you cock gobbler. Anon was just asking for a place like Shounen Jump for comics, so I gave him more sites to look at. If he doesn't like it? No prob.

Drill these in your head, faggot:
(1) Webtoon and Lezhin aren't for bookshelves of all ages. While some do make physical prints of their work, definitely not all do it.
(2) You can make your work completely free if you want.
(3) Webtoon and Lezhin can host both sex and violence no problemo (ex: Bastard, WDTFS)
(4) Not everyone on those sites are gods. There are some tumblresque works in there and some of those even made it to top lists. Take a look at Always Human by walkingnorth. It's just pretty colors, but shit drawing and ehh plot.
(5) You can't say NO ONE here wants their work to have recognition. Stop pulling shit from your ass.

Those sites have a mix of professionals and non-professionals with lives of their own doing their best on their works so it'll look as good as possible and so they can improve. You're even given a choice if you want to compete with other creators or just not give a shit. Don't run your crab mentality just because your skills are in the bottom of the barrel.

>>
>>82520129
Not to be rude, but if you're going to draw it like that perhaps you should make it more like an in-universe live action show instead of a cartoon. She's drawn in the same style as your characters and your style isn't abstract enough for it to look the same while being understood as a cartoon (like the Justice Friends and Puppet Pals).
>>
>>82520181
But..
>>
>>82520208
What? All I'm saying is a few little stylistic changes would make it clearer that it's a cartoon, but if you don't want to change it a live action show would make sense too.

Live action heroes are fun because the characters can meet them...but I suppose that's not what you want since you specifically chose it to be a cartoon.

I can't decide if I want to go color or black and white.

Also digital artists, what software do you use for comics? I'm using Medibang right now because I like the cloud function, but I'm wondering if I should buy Clip Studio (when it's on sale)
>>
>>82523298
There's something to consider when deciding between color or black and white-

the cost of printing. Be prepared to pay massively more for color if you ever want to see your comic in physical form. Seriously, especially if it's a long form comic. Go take a look at printing sites and check out the quotes.

And yes, definitely buy clip studio paint. The biggest advantage it has over all other programs (aside from photoshop) is that it can handle very large files very easily. Also, the big advantage it has over photoshop is that you can buy it cheaply and legally, and get free upgrades after you do so.
>>
>>82516464

>>
>>82523398
I have Photoshop, too (I subscribe to the CS mostly due to work purposes), but I don't usually use it for drawing, just layouts and text. I prefer Paint Tool Sai for art but Medibang has some nice brushes too.

>>82523350
I have Manga Studio 4 EX and I like how it handles comic files, like nicely laid out instead of having to do individual files. But just the general drawing in it is something I need to do more research in.
>>
>>82523298

I work in black and white* as I eventually get my strips printed as a collection at the end of the year. If a print collection isn't in your immediate future, then go for colour if you have the time. Ideally you should be working and saving your files at a print ready size anyway, as you never know what the future may hold.

*Greyscale really, but that's essential b&w for printing purposes.

And seconding the purchase of Clip Studio Paint (aka Manga Studio), seeing as it's specifically geared towards making comics. If you're going to be working on multi-page stories for printing, then invest in the EX version if you can.

for a first page this isn't very good. the problem is the lack of context; we know nothing about this situation, who these people are.
>>
>>82525217
It's a school shooting obviously.

Informed someone to stop wasting their time, which is valuable advice seeing as they will never affect change or get any meaningful discussion out of what they're doing? Seems worth better than a shitpost to me. Replying to them to spite me at the very least.

Or a horrible science experiment gone awry.
Or a monster attack at a basketball stadium.
Or a superhero flick being shot at a warehouse.

This is good art. Nice use of perspective.

I've read my fair share of long form webcomics, and science fiction is my favorite genre.

Se my first point of advice is: Keep the pacing up! A lot of authors can take the arc you're describing, and turn it into a years-long comic where the characters take two months to buy something at a store. Keep it lean and practical, I suppose. When you find yourself adding stuff that should logically happen, but wonder whether it adds to the story, err on the side of caution. The space bear is a nice gimmick.

Idk about you, but I'm getting weird xmen mutant vibes from it and one of them should only live. Bottom right lady could be a scientist. But of course, this is only my shit imagination running around compensating for the lack of more info. That poster only posted 1 page. The rest of what the fucks happening should flow better with the next pages. I'm honestly okay with the first page and I like it that he kept it short at 4 panels, but I think he should've made few more pages to show here and not just 1 pic because obviously people are going to be saying "the fuck is this? The fuck is that?" He's been lurking here for a few months now forever hesitating to post. You'd think he'd have at least 3-5 pages ready by now.
>>
>>82525217
beginning in medias res isn't an unusual narrative device. give it another page at least
>>
>>82526016
Yeah, the author is obviously following the typical rule of fiction: Drop them into the action. And there's nothing wrong with that. We're obviously going to get an introduction, and the function to me seems to be to induce the question of "what the fuck is going on here?"
>>
>>82525551
Leave the conversation alone entirely.

I like the last idea better. I think it gives it a more adventurous feel rather than committing suicide over and over and usual "wake up" method.

As for the second question I need to ask. Does the kid's physical body get pulled inside the tree or just his mind? Because if it's the latter you need to think of what the body does while the kid is inside; doe it fall asleep in front of the tree? Does it walk back it it's bed? Or does it keep on going with it's everyday life without the mind realizing it, in which case you could have the kid "wake up" in the middle of awkward situations.

>>82515433
Yeah, it's hard to insert comedy when you also want to move the story along.

>>82516459
Personally, if your series is largely episodic, I would recommend AGAINST giving us the protag's origins from the start. Granted, I'm biased because that's what I did, but here's how I see it: The first chapter should give the reader a feel for what the story will be about, but it also give reader time to get interested in the main character before revealing their back story. Comics like Cerebus, Usagi Yojimbo, or even plenty of Adventure Manga like Berserk or Fullmetal Alchemist didn't reveal the character's origins the reader had familiarized themselves with how the character was at present.

Obviously, the best approach depends on the story, but I think most readers prefer to jump into the adventure and get to know the characters better later on

i don't remember. point is.. well, you used to just kinda instinctively HAVE it. at least rim-lighting, which is appropriate in certain situations. but as often happens, now that you're studying you're kinda losing it.. so it's a good idea to actually study shading now (you've been focusing on construction right?). I think you'll get it, and it'll help you think more in 3d. because this current shading is VERY 2d, it's shading the shapes only as they appear to the viewer, as if the rest of the angles don't exist.

Critique desired on the following:

John is a hardened inmate serving a ten year sentence for manslaughter at a maximum security prison. When he learns about the death of his divorced wife, John realizes the last good parent his only child had is gone. Feeling remorseful and full of regret, he convinces the parole board to release him. Making his way back to the small Tennessee town he once lived in, he attempts to reconnect with his wayward 17 year old son, Caleb, who he finds walking the same dangerous path of drug dealing and violence that led his father to become incarcerated. Caleb, resentful of his dad's absence in his life, makes every attempt to sabotage John's efforts. Eager to right his past sins and show his love for the only remaining piece of his family, John must fight both against his past and for son's future in a place where a good life isn't so easily won.

What I would like to do: explore drug addiction (mainly fentanyl/heroin) in a rural setting, take a look at positive and negative masculinity, and see poverty and what life is like for felons. I will be using anthropomorphic characters in order to avoid making it about any particular race or ethnicity. What I am aiming for is something as true to life as possible that will move the audience deeply, something haunting and beautiful, brutal and exacting yet with the tenderest of moments.

The story will be told in a three act black and white comic format. I don't plan on releasing this for another year-ish but I am working on concept art because I want to do this right, even if it means going slow.

Thoughts?

i remember this. nice you've fleshed it out. I really think it has potential to be beautiful and meaningful and shit. I'm expecting something that feels as deep as Anders loves Maria
ugh i just hate the name caleb. but that's just me.

...aaand i just realized this is a TNG episode.
>anthropomorphic characters
i rreeaallly don't think that suits this. then again you could do something truly unique and make them something totally original, not based on any real animal but basically aliens.

the point of replacing humans with animals isnt to make things raceless (hell it makes them even more racial, just.. different races. races of animals.. which people have LESS anger about but still some)
the point is taking weak, boring, cerebral creatures and replacing them with sleek, athletic, fearsome ones with teeth and claws and all the fun stuff. If your furry comic neuters them by putting them in normal real-life situations, then it's an insult to animalkind. boring, pointless, and kind of disturbing actually.. since it tends to soften them in the process into a bunch of stuffed toys. the next step after that is diapers.
so unless this guy's son gets into gang fights where busting a cap is replaced by tearing out a guy's throat with your fangs, and the leader of the rival gang is a fucking rhinoceros and that's why nobody can touch him, then... i just don't see it

i mean unless you're going full artistic like Maus or something, then the animal thing is just 'they look cool and that is fine'
>>
>>82527532
sounds like a typical sunday afternoon, basic, made-for-tv flick plot. Probably starring an actor from TNG trying to do serious drama.
>>
>>82528251
What's TNG?
>>
>>82528322
star trek the next generation, dude
there was an episode where picard discovered the son he never knew about, who is now a delinquent teenager, resistant to contact by the dad he had always assumed abandoned him and his mom who has since died.
it's a GOOD story, i enjoy watching people work through issues like that.

Scribblehatch can't help himself; if a conversation is about him he MUST reply, no matter how damaging it is to his reputation, no matter how stupid it makes him look.
>>
>>82528174
Cartoonists have been using animal characters as simple stand-ins for humans since cartooning began. If anything, I'd say the idea that these animal characters should be "sleek, athletic, fearsome ones with teeth and claws" is a more recent one that probably sprang out of Furry Fandom.

It depends whether you're going with characters that are essentially humans but who look like animals, or if you're starting with animals and imagining them evolved up to human levels.

Besides, there's ways to make characters raceless without turning them into animals. You could reduce their features down to a simple cartoon level, even omitting the nose entirely, or make the heads geometric shapes.
>>
>>82528444
I looked over a ton of movies and you're telling me Star Trek already did it? Fucks sake I wasted like two weeks on watching shit to avoid cliches. Well I guess I will watch it now.
>>
>>82528466
which wouldn't be a problem if we didn't have 2 or 3 people in here who also obsessively reply to any reply scribblehatch makes of ANY KIND
>>
>>82528613
okay, but if you're talking 'funny animals' then.. that doesn't suit a serious drama because they're goofy.

and no, that didn't spring out of furry, it created furry. like so many other creepy weird internet things, obsession with something cool turned into something lame. it sprang out of toy sales for series about cool animal and mutant characters that fought things.
>>
>>82528873
Which wouldn't happen if he stopped posting anonymously so our filters could make short work of all of his posts.
>>
>>82528651
everything's a cliche, don't worry.
and there's also a big difference here, in the case of picard being a SQUARE, so his son didn't want to listen to him, UNTIL he told him about his own iffy past and teenage shenanigans.
in your story the guy is a criminal himself so his son's not going to spout the cliche YOU DONT UNDERSTAND because he knows full well that he does.
>>
>>82528927
which of course you're imagining because if there's anyone in here who always posts with his trip even when anonymous would be more appropriate, it's the scribbleman
