Cap was wrong.

There, I said it.

Cap lost his trust in people. He wasn't even willing to make an effort to work within the system. Yes, Ross is an asshole, but he was willing to give the Avengers a chance, to have them take lead. Had Cap registered, he would have been able to bring Bucky in safely, and be able to convince everyone Bucky was framed from the get-go.
But, also, he was the one who decided to actually fight. Tony kept trying to reason with him, go easy on him while trying to give him a chance to comply and stand down. Cap went to war.

But mostly, I directly blame Cap for not trusting Tony in Siberia. Tony would never kill Bucky. That's quite simply a fact. But when you've just broken up with the love of your life, your best friend was almost killed in front of your eyes, and is now permanently invalid, and then you get to hear the person who was the cause for all the shit that has happened in the last few days was also the one who killed your parents, and is standing right next to you, then yes, it's not human not to react emotionally and lash out. That was an emotional reaction. It's not a morally or rationally good reaction, but any other reaction than the kind of emotional reaction that Tony displayed would have been cold and inhuman. But Tony would never kill Bucky, not like that, not in cold blood. Cap should have known that. Yes, Bucky would have ended up with a few cuts and bruises, but Cap should have trusted Tony not to kill Bucky. But Cap didn't. He didn't trust Tony to ultimately make the right call. He doesn't trust anyone to make the right call, except for himself, which he almost literally says at the start of the movie.

So, yes, Cap was wrong.

At least he had enough selfawareness to recognize that he no longer has trust in the people he claims to represent, which is why he left the symbol of that trust, the shield, behind for Tony.

Well, to be fair, the registration act was complete bullshit. But no one could know that, I suppose. Normally, there's really nothing wrong with enforced accountability in a situation like this, especially since secret identities aren't necessarily gonna be made public, and it really is the right call. But in this case, the entire thing was a bogus plan put together by a guy with a grudge, so yeah. He couldn't have possibly known it, but Cap technically made the right decision, if only purely by accident.

I think the political conflict and the personal one worked hand in hand.

the accords were an issue that affected all heroes, but the bucky problem was one specific complication that made everything so much more complicated for those that cared.

because you have the general problem and the specific problem, everyone's invested, some people are invested more, and you can show the varying degrees that the problems affected everyone

The core political message is:

Systems are well and good, but they're often composed of people. And people fuck things up, so try not to give the fuck-ups power. By all means, Big Brother, Minority Report us; but if some cheap facial prosthetics are enough to get your men chasing after the wrong man then take a 10-step walk off a 4-step pier.

Team Iron Man wasn't flawed because superheroes having accountability is an inherent bad thing. It was flawed because it had Thunderbolt Ross on staff.

Team Cap wanting a sleeker, swifter response team that didn't have to deal with red tape wasn't bad. What was bad was how they were all blindly following an emotionally compromised guy who made out with the great niece of his old flame a few days after her funeral, pointedly ignored said old flame's advice of "compromise where you can" in favour of the sexier "no, you move" aspect, and for all his talk of loyalty, transparency, and integrity, withholding the truth of how Tony's parents actually died from him was a dick move of the highest calibre.

To summarise:
If an utter bastard says he'll do you a good turn if you give him your support, don't trust him, because even if he does keep his word, his bastard nature will have him screw you over eventually.

In Mexico yesterday, they beat Ultron‘s start to log the best industry opening of all time, according to Disney, with a haul of $7.3M. It's the culmination over a story lasting nearly 10 years, from over 20 movies, featuring dozens of characters all building up to a huge finale. People have spent years being invested in the MCU.

If the Russos managed to pull off IW, I will be absolutely amazed.

http://www.economist.com/blogs/prospero/2016/04/marvel-cinematic-universe

>“Civil War” does feature the near obligatory antagonistic brasshat, but for the most part the superheroes are fighting between themselves. With both sides of the conflict drawn with some sympathy, the fights—some handled lightly, some given dramatic heft by wounds that carry consequences—benefit from a sense that beliefs and personal ties are at stake. Towards the very end this conflict based on principles is transmuted into one based on deeper family history—but the change is done deftly, and convincingly. In this, as in its various other manifestations of intelligence, narrative clarity and wit, “Civil War” functions as a rebuff to the bloated, senseless disappointment of “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice”, a recent outing from rival comic-book/studio pairing DC and Warner Bros. The most obvious contrast, perhaps, is in the introduction of characters slated soon to star in their own films. “Batman v Superman” does this by having someone watch video clips of these coming attractions in exactly the manner of a fanboy scanning YouTube for spoilers—which is not anything like as amusingly meta as it might sound. “Civil War” makes one newbie fundamental to the plot, and the other a genuinely welcome addition to the action.

On one hand it was a geninue surprise and the trailers managed to keep the actual story underwraps.

On the other hand the politics are just a political smokescreen and a way to drag the movie out while the evil plot boils down to one guy trying really hard to piss the Avengers off while having no intention of actually pulling off his evil plan.

So it's kind of a letdown.

I think this movie shows us they actually could pull it off, it's just a matter of whether they actually do. They did an absolutely magnificent job of balancing so many characters by not wasting too much time on already established ones, giving the headliners the most screen time, and giving the newbies enough time to get people hyped and really give them their own voices/motivations.

Now for my ideal IW1 plot:

Thanos is the main character and it first establishes his iron grip in space, the respect and fear he demands. The scene of him getting the gauntlet (do it myself) is in the movie and he sets out to get the stones.

First stop: Knowhere to take the Aether from the Collector, with whom we see he has a casual, rivalrous relationship when it comes to these McGuffins. He doesn't actually kill the Collector, though, but gets info from him on the Guardians and the Power Stone. Guardians appear for a scene or two, Nebula is involved, She sacrifices herself to fight Thanos and let the Guardians get away, not knowing he already has a stone to fuck her up. The Guardians unknowingly lead Thanos right to Xandar where the Power Stone is being kept because they need to warn them. Thanos uses the Reality Stone to warp there in an instant.

Second stop: Xandar to fuck up the Nova Corps and take the Power stone. Thanos carries out the planetary genocide that Ronan failed to. No need to keep anyone alive because Thanos already knows where to get the Tesseract.

Third Stop: Asgard to bitch slap Loki. Really long and drawn out beating to teach him a lesson about failing Thanos and running away. Thanos refuses to use any stones for this beatdown, very personal. Loki tries to use magic and gets in a few blows, but nothing great. His dying act is warning all of Asgard to leave. Thor, Heimdall, and a small percentage of Asgardians escape via the Bifrost before Thanos chokes the life out of Loki and razes Asgard with the Power Stone. Thanos leaves with the Tesseract.

Thanos does not know where the scepter/Mind Stone is, but concludes it must be on Earth. Dunno how to handle Time/Soul yet because we haven't seen them yet.

Scenes on Earth will intercut Thanos scenes, just to give a full view of what's going on in the MCU. Vision and Strange both get premonitions of disaster (Strange because duh, Vision because of the Mind Stone's connection to the other stones).

Thor appears on Earth with his band of Asgardian refugees to tell the Avengers what's happening near the end of the movie but not right at the end. The end shows the Guardians (and maybe Adam Warlock) appearing on Earth because they know Thanos mentioned finally destroying the "Terrans." Peter Quill delivers this line of course, being a Terran.
>>
>>82353963
He's the dude dead in the bathtub with the Mario Moustache.

I legit laughed my ass off, because he was reprising his role from TWS and in the directors commentary track they said he had a moustache for 2 or 3 takes but it couldn't stick in the re-shoots and they had to CGI it out.

In CW the moustache returns in force.

So I may have a chance to watch this on Monday. Should I take it? Or is it not worth my time? I liked BvS aside from Lex/WW, and I liked Winter Soldier.

>>
>>82354394

This is true. The "civil war" fight actually made sense, people were pulling their punches and they had good moviations for fighting (Team Iron Man wants to stop Cap from starting an international incident. Team Cap just wants to get away so they can prove Bucky's innocence and stop what they think was the real threat)

Unlike the comic where one bad law and the heroes are lining up to kill each other purely because of this law.
>>
>>82354432
I'm still not convinced on the Russos properly doing the space stuff yet.
>>
I'm going to say I was not quite crazy about Spidey.

I mean. they have the Peter Parker down, but Spidey needed more attitude. He was funny but in a dorky fan kind of way.

Early Spidey was kind of an ass to other heroes in the comics to be honest.
>>
>>82354650
I wouldn't be surprised if James Gunn is a consult for that stuff.
>>
>>82354457

Which is weird, because Howard and Cap were about the same age and had a adult friendship.

>>82354651

>>
>>82354491
Well it wasn't 'right' maybe, but he did it because he knew the public was going to lynch her and she might go spastic if that happened. Wanda not being an US citizen is a legit argument for why she needs to be 'babysat'. Non-american's aren't considered real people by the government.
>>
>>82354432
I want IW1 to end with the united nations surrendering to Thanos's empire to spare the earth from being flat out destroyed.

Scott is happy but thinking about what will likely happen because of his actions helping Cap spells serious misery for him. All that effort to go straight in Ant-man and he's a criminal because he tried to do the right thing again.

Peter though actually makes out great. He gets a boost to his superhero rep, cool new toys, a new mentor in Tony, and all the misery of the plot is lost on him because he doesn't actually know any of these people. And unlike Antman he gets to go home to Aunt May with no consequences.

Replace Coogler with Reed and Derrickson and add the IW writers. Coogler and Waititi and Watts are following, not setting the pace. Reed, Gunn and the Russos are the ones deciding things. Apparently Reed is a huge nerd, bigger than Feige, I heard.

My guess is only the guys whose stories intersect really need to work together like this. Ant-Man and the Wasp is definitely a separate story, as is Doctor Strange. But Black Panther will presumably tie in significantly (even if just for a few scenes) and GotG: Vol 2 will definitely tie in to Infinity War

I loved that the movie made you think it would go the cliche route of VS flicks in the final act and have the opposing heroes make up to fight the 'true villain' together, but pulled a 180 on the audience that led to an intense and personal fight between Cap and Tony instead.

Considering they're probably arrest on sight all over the world there's little help they can really do to anyone.

The only heroic they can do is backing Tchalla up in Black Panther's film.
