Kraven was always doped up on "jungle potions" that gave him at least enhanced strength, speed, endurance, agility durability and senses. He was able to beatdown a gorilla, disable an elephant, and go toe-to-toe with Spidey.
Kraven is a foe whose skills at tracking, hunting, fighting, traps, poison & drug knowledge, melee and missile weapons, have been honed over a long lifetime (100, + or -, years), making him a serious threat.

Weisman said he had plans that would make transformed Kraven pay off. Plans that involved Calypso and John Jameson. My guess is that Calypso would use some kind of spell to transfer Kraven's beast-like appearance to John Jameson, making him Man-Wolf.

What gets me is that I thought that first fight was actually pretty great. I assumed Kraven would take his loss and plan around it better to set up better traps and hunt Spidey more efficiently. Instead he went and turned towards Warren. It felt like wasted potential to me.

I get that, and in that sense I do like how they were slowly building up Warren's shenanigans, but it neutered Kraven's character in the process, to me.
