Volume 1 was like 20 minutes long so you didn't have to deal with the hours of awful dialog the newer volumes had.
It gets good for about a quarter of season 2.

Monty was a pro at using Poser for Fight scenes, but not so much for everyday mundane things, and even a fight-scentric series can't survive without a good deal of those. And when you get right down to it, using Poser for animation is like coding with Sanskrit. Now that they've upgraded to Maya, which everyone in the production knows how to use, things will go much more smoothly, and we've already seen some massive improvement.
Monty dying was a bad thing in general, but without him insisting on using outdated software, the general state of the show will only improve. I'm sure he'd be happy to see his pet project flourish.

Is the show good? No. Is the show bad? Yes and no. The show is a kind of weak premise in the first place and no amount of killing off characters or dramatic storylines will change that. The fight scenes are decent, but if you're only watching a show for fight scenes then there are way better shows for that.

Monty never came across as hardheaded. He personally handed writing duties to Miles and Kerry because he knew he wasn't a writer. And because he wanted to focus on making cool fight scenes.
Shane acts like only he, Monty. and Sheena truly know/knew the real RWBY. But Miles and Kerry are the people who Monty worked with closest when it came to story, character development, etc.
I trust that they know the real RWBY a hell of a lot better than Shane ever could.

I dislike the idea of Jaune witnessing Pyrrha's death, but I'd have been fairly ok with it. But the idea of him CAUSING it is fucking ridiculous.
According to Shane's clusterfuck of self-pity and petulant blame shifting that he calls a letter, Pyrrha was also supposed to be WINNING against Cinder, which makes this whole thing even more absurd.
I mean, put the two together and what do you get? Jaune shows up to try and help, is so useless he not only doesn't help anyone do anything, but he also gets his waifu killed. The guy who's primary aspiration is to not be 'that guy who is useless' winds up being SO CATASTROPHICALLY USELESS that he not only gets his would-be lover killed in a fight she'd have won, but also singlehandidly doomed one of the few bastions of civilization in the entire world, if not the whole world itself.

That's a change I'm really happy for, because Breach was such a massive let down and ended up being such a non issue that it honestly made it look like there was no genuine threat that the heroes had faced since they more or less streamrolled over everything that came their way.
V3 needed to be a utter curb stomp for the heroes because at that point that had been no real threat to them.

Agreed. It's one thing to prove that the heroes have a fighting chance against the villains, but you can't START OUT with that as the case, least of all when you make it abundantly clear that the heroes are still in training.
No matter how skilled and talented, you can't throw a student with incomplete training and minimal field experience into battle with a veteran demi-god and expect them to survive, let alone preform well.
Having said that, I'm happy that Pyrrha showed a good deal of competence in her fight with Cinder. She IS a famous athlete, so it makes sense that she'd be able to hold her own for at least a little while, even if she was still totally outclassed.
