Have three styles of armor. Slim suits that can be quickly put on but have limited protection and armament. Like the briefcase armor designed to be carried around when shit happens without warning. Medium bulk armor which requires a proper setup to put on quickly but can still be put on by hand slowly. These form the vast majority of his armors both regular and specialized. Then you have the huge armors. Carry enormous amounts of armor, firepower, and experimental stuff. Used against power threats but require dedicated setup to wear.

Doom's regular getup doesn't have the right design to be heroic, you'd need to tweak it to evoke a more knightly appearance.
And Tony being the end all be all tech guy of Marvel can work if you are willing to make the setup facilitate the stories. So he's King Big Dick of the powered armor game, he's constantly having to innovate and upgrade, his paranoia and need for control means he has to do everything and can't delegate, it's a drain on his and his company's resources, and at any given point there are dozens of supervillains, rival companies, and governments - including his own - using industrial espionage to get their hands on his tech. And while he's the best of the best, his competition is also innovating, ruthless, and willing to take a different direction.

Well the silver is far more DOOM inspired than Red and yellow. That and the mask is too complicated, so they opted for a more Doom-esque Bendis Ironman mask.
Couple of things.
One, Tony's suit is NOT better then Dooms. It's different. Tony's suit is designed primarily as a weapon, so it's stronger, faster, has more weapons etc. Because Tony is a weapon maker
Doom is not just some engineer, he is the freaking smartest person on the planet (sharing the spot with Reed, but w/e). He is also one of the mightiest sorcerers ever. So his suit doesn't have as many fancy weapons. What it does have is stuff Tony could only dream of making, like: a time machine, molecular expander, power draining device etc. It also has magic runes and enchantments and trinkets to bolsters Doom's magic. Since Doom primarily uses magic as a means of attack (since it shits on tech anyway), his armor is primarily dedicated to protection. That's why it's FAR more durable then Tony's, with those retarded forcefields that can take a hit from almost anything and the armor itself surviving a beating from the likes of Thor and Surfer.
In short, Tony armor = Has to sacrifice a lot of defense since it's also his main form offence.
Doom armor = durable as fuck and mostly utility based since he can just magic anything into oblivion anyway

He performed far better then anyone else would. Just defeating the Beyonders was an impossible feat, but any man would break instantly under the stress of holding all of that together. Doom was basically given a stone and told to build a castle from it, and although that castle wasn't the best or the prettiest and kept leaking and whatnot, it was still a far better job then what could have been expected or would have been done by ANYONE.
