Really, though, instead of references I'd just put in small amounts of stuff that I know would get discussed here, like plots or side characters, and then try to twist them in a way we wouldn't usually expect. Just have fun with it.

Mine would be an adventure series, never in the same place twice. If they are it's a 2 parter.

Chi would be used similar to dbz style, but magic and other energies like psychics would be used to. Not like HxH, since kids love animals I would make the main guy some humanoid chimp, model him after the monkey king. After that I would have other characters modeled after Norse valkries, cthulu old gods, and some African gods, but of course they all be mortals.
Make the planet they are on made of separate factions, almost like theme video game levels each faction they go through.
I'd make monsters and people with technology major players as well.

Like, this one series I've been contemplating since I was kid, called Spectral, has this character named Greg. His parents are divorced when he was little, with his Dad moving to New York and taking his older brother, Malcolm. Malcolm would go on to become a pretty famous Boxer, known for his signature Green boxing gloves and short stature. It's pretty obvious who his brother is a reference to if you're into Nintendo games, even more so now then when I came up with it. There's also a girl named Lilly, who wears an outfit based on Tiny Kong's modern look.
A kind of superhero parody I have characters are references to 'real' superheroes, like Dynamo who is an orphaned vigilante who has no powers and acts with weapons, like Batman, but who causes tons of damage with his explosives while trying to stop petty crimes. The main character also assumes he got his powers in some freak accident that goes against conventional science, to which his scientist friend tries to wrack his brain to solve, only to have it be something way more simple.
Another concept I have in mind, about a apocalyptic future has an organization known as 'Youth' who's logo is a parody of Team Rocket's run by a Robotic Mom who commands aliens resembling Irkens, if they were more like realistic insects. And since the main team is fighting the super natural with future-tech and robots, a lot of plots and characters are going to have ties to pop-culture; though that's part of the story as well.
